I think Menzel will be a very good replacement for Moons. Moons has almost joined the Shannon Byrnes club of stuff ups lately.

I don't know if I'd go as far as to suggest Mooney is heaps worse than Pods. Apart from his moments of indiscipline, what I would say is that Moons still contests, his marking isn't going as well as Pods atm I grant you that, but it has potential in big games, he's got very quick hands, he chases etc, in short provides a lot to the team. What I would suggest though is if we're down late in the 4th in a final, this is the order of who we'd want kicking for goal:
1. Chapstring
2. SJ
3. GAblett
4. JPOD
5. Stoker
6. Varcs
7. Any midfielder
8. Hawkins

Then and only then Mooney, which basically means he'd only be a better shot for goal than Byrnes, which ain't saying much. And he knows it too. If we don't find a way to minimise it, it could well cost us the flag. Hence I suggest once Pods returns he goes back to reprising his lead up constant movement role that he's done so well over the last 3 years, and we leave the goalkicking to those who can actually do it. Has to be the best thing for the team.

I'll give you two - 2007 Qualifying Final against North (5 goals), and the 2007 Grand Final (5 goals, 13 marks). Even in last year's Grand Final he kicked more than superstars Riewoldt and Kosi.

I'm with a few others, his form is actually quite solid. It's just kicking for goal. Without being an expert, he simply has to relax and kick through the ball, and not worry about whether it goes out on the full. As long as he keeps having shots I'm sure it'll come good eventually.

That QF v north was a romp for all involved and he kicked 4 of his 5 goals in second half v Port in the GF

When I was playing the South Eastern league a hundred years ago (half forward flank), I got the yips.

My coach came up to me at half time and said he didn't give a stuff if I missed, but if he ever saw that worried look on my face when I was lining up he would drag me straight away. He said "Look like you want to kick a f@#ing goal for f%$#'s sake!"

And it was true, I had forgot why I got the pill in the first place. I was too worried about how I would look missing another one to remember that I actually wanted to kick a goal.

I decided not to count backmen in the list, didn't want to make Moons feel any worse

Still need Mooney in the side - so if he has the yips - well GFC will have to live with it.

And if he plays up the ground further - which he often does - that means he can deliver to someone who can kick goals.

I still say, and have been for 3 months now, that Ablett will play more up forward in the finals to make sure we get the goals we need. One on one Ablett with room in the 50 will be a very difficult task to stop kicking goals.

I like the idea of Mooney taking a grab about 80-90 metres out and kicking it long inside fifty towards Ablett, Chapman or Varcoe one on one... those three have a good ability that, if they don't mark it initially, will get it off the ground and produce some snapping good leg work. Have seen it a few times this year and it works a treat so long as our forward 50 is not flooded with opposition defenders.

Mooney is fine.... He is never going to be a superstar CHF, but FFS he delivers often enough. His presence and ability to create a challenging marking contest is primarily his reason for being included....add to that his complete knowledge of our structures and you can see his worth.

For me he has two really good roles, one is playing very deep forward - sitting on the box almost and providing a marking contest / spillage. The other is as a deep leading CHF who will run straight through the corridor up to the centre circle prodving a hit up on the burst. Both these roles force holes in the opposition defence as you still need a realtively good defender to go with him and it forces them to either sit to deep - thus giving SJ, Ablett, Chapman, Varcoe more space to work in front....or it creates space behind the defensive zone where we can kick over the head to 1:1 contests more oftent than not involving SJ. Thats the beauty of it, Mooney understands this and plays it well....

Where he falls down more often than not is when we become too congested in the forward 50 and he plays as a leading forward target out to the flanks - where we all know he is capable of producing some woeful kicking!


However, Mooney is still a definite inclusion this year.

Agree , he will play no doubt.

He does look a little down in confidence , it would be fantastic if he could grab a couple in the square , put a couple thru and start to get confidence back again. I always worry a little when his shape is not a draw , when he starts push fading it or hooking it. IMO , its 2 sides of the same coin. Tight groins, hammys etc not allowing him to kick thru the ball. This can create the missing shots which then reawakens the ghosts of the past leading to the passing to team mates.

I just hope the the powers to be , down at the club haven't let the 08 stuff to leak in again. He must be told to have the shot , its important for the overall health of the side.

I will always be happy to see Moons streaming up the centre of the ground taking a good contested mark. When i see that it makes me think that our structures are working and the team is clicking. Moons is vital to our forwardline.

However, i completely agree with everyone here that his kicking for goal is absolute shithouse at the moment.

perhaps if we put boots on his fists he would score more goals?
