MATTHEW Egan has undergone further surgery on his troublesome foot.

The Geelong centre-half back had screws removed from his foot on Monday, meaning he will be on crutches for the next month.
The club reported that the operation went well.

Egan has not played since injuring the navicular bone in his foot in Round 22, 2007.

He was named to the All-Australian team that year, and made a last-ditch bid to play in the Grand Final, but has not looked close to playing since then, undergoing several operations.

We will get to see him in the last month of the season at the VFL (coaching not playing of course). I hope and pray that the removal of these pins means hes going to be able to start walking more freely. If I see that, i'll be feeling much much more confident about his chances of returning, because he's a looooooooooooong shot right at the moment based on his current range of movement.

So this is the part that if it doesn't work, that's it?

Yeah, he had his navicular fused to his cuneiform. Thats a last resort option, so its all or nothing from here.

Personally, I can't see the club keeping him on the list next year.

He would have to show some pretty remarkable improvement from now until season's end. That seems unlikely.:(

Delist and pick him up as a rookie? I doubt a club would steal him from you.

That is a definite possibility.

I hope he finally gets some good luck, with at least working out what his future is, either as a player or not. It would be so disheartening to be in this dead zone, not knowing whether he'd either walk normal again or have a slight chance of playing.

I doubt we'd keep him on the full list next year, rookie is the best bet. Much like Rama from the Dons I believe is our best option.

He'd be too old for Rookie listing

Just wondering how Rama was rookied by the Dons, or if he ever was. Wondering if he was too old and couldn't.

I remember a story about it, the Dons requested something from the other clubs so he could be rookied. Unsure if that was the case or not.

Anyone remember?

Would hate to see us keep a spot open in probably the hardest period to retain players and recruit new ones in the next year or so.

Situation is completely different. Rama had cancer which is obviously unrelated to football so the AFL made an exception for Essendon. It won't happen for Egan. Many players have had their career cut short due to injury and Egan is likely to join that group.

They asked for special permission for it to happen and it was granted.

Geelong could ask, as it would not hurt to but I doubt they would allow it.

The other clubs would have to agree and just last year the AFL said the Polak could not do it becuase that was what the LTI list was for.

So it would be very doubtful it would be allowed to happen.

I don't know how these things work - but as a long term injury list player - does that mean Egan still counts as full time paid player ? Is this reduced as such with a veteran player (counting only 50 % I think to the salary cap) ?

It seems a double injustice to lose such a great player and then have to keep him on the payroll as 'normal player'. Geelong I am sure would only want the best for him regardless how the op. goes - but I suppose eventually money comes into the equation.

I remember at the time he underwent that 'radical' treatment to try and play in the grand final someone said that it didnt risk his longterm playing career if it didnt work, has anyone from the club commented about that?

Firstly, find a quote attributed to someone speaking on behalf of the club or GTFO.

"I remember at the time...." doesn't cut it I am afraid.

Secondly, if this was said at the time, what do you want the club to comment on? That the management of the injury has been poor? No shit buddy.

All of this hand wringing about Egan trying to play in the GF is rubbish. He is a grown man, and he along with the club made the decision to go down the path that they did. No-one put a gun to his head, and made him do anything against his own free will. It sucks that it has turned out the way it has, but that is life sometimes.

I really hope that he recovers to at least have a decent range of motion with his feet (playing footy would be a massive bonus and a lottery-like long shot you would think at this stage), because he seems like a genuinely good bloke. But sometimes in life you make decisions that don't turn out the way you want them to. Move on.

I guess this is pretty much the last gasp to see how the foot recovers. It would be bloody awesome to see him back in the hoops. But it's great to see that he is around the club helping out, I am sure it is a pretty hard thing for him at the moment.

Best of luck Matty!

Well i'm not going to try to find a quote but i'm sure it exists because he was having something weird like radiotherpy or something like that on it and there were some questions raised at the time.

As far as being a grown man and all that, sure but the club definitely has a duty of care to him regardless of what decisions he makes. Seems really bad luck for him anyway.
