Gee what a glut of options.

Western Bulldogs. Made a grand final and now making a big mess of their window. Picking off struggling teams to keep their dream alive.

Port Adelaide. They were primed for the push. The 2018 super drafters of the draft couldn't do much except win the flag 4 months ago. Needing to face a WAFL side to open the account. Now they have a couple on the trot they would be disappointing both side of the supporter base - those death riding Ken and those holding onto hope of a flag.

Essendon - A big jump in memberhips from last year to this tells you all you need to know about the expectations on this mob coming into this year. If your only win to date is versus the Crows you've got a bit of soul searching to do. Then again, the rest of the competition is now aware that the only thing worse than 1 accumulator who does no damage is 2.

Kangaroos - They've had the best youth in the competition for about 6 years now and if anything, they also have a lesson to teach. In sales. Okay you might be able to sell ice to eskimos but can you sell hope to Kangaroos fans for 20 years without ever delivering? Someone at Arden St can.

West Coast - Just woeful from start to finish. You wonder how they beat Collingwood. Not their ideal preparation coming into the season to be sure but it's becoming diabolical seemingly no matter how many ageing stars they get back in. Fear not, Simmo will not drop them. But neither will the margins.

GWS - You just know if that if you see that list in the bottom half it's all gone wrong. Better signs this weekend but if that's just their second win(d) they have it all to do.

Who you got folks?

First instinct was to go Essendon but really can't go past the Dogs. Runners up after being top 2 most of last year, JUH coming into his 2nd season, a relatively healthy midfield after missing key players through most of last year. They may make a charge in the 2nd half of the season especially once Bruce comes back but hard to see them challenging this year.

I've actually got the Gold Coast Suns. I expected more out of them.
Suns don't have many wins on the board, but their percentage is 85 or so. They're not getting blown out of the water and are obviously thereabouts in some of the games they've lost.

I remember Brisbane being in this position when Fagan took over....not immediately getting the wins on the board, but the % was significantly improved, showing they were much more competitive in most games.

Ordinarily I’d say Essendon but never rated them to begin with, and they haven’t disappointed me in the slightest.
It was ridiculous the amount of hype they got. Their list isn't even that good and their captain is fairy floss, both in hairstyle and personality. Was always going to happen.

But I would stop short of saying disappointing - I am liking this Essendon.

Quality OP.

Toss up between GWS and the Bombres.

Both the Doggies and Port clearly have PTSD from the violent assaults that ended their respective 2021s...would expect 2023 to go better for them and kinda suspected they would struggle a bit (not to this extent of course).

The Giants and those other campaigners have no excuse.

I've got Port.

Bombers are bad but they scraped into 8th last year and probably looked a bit better than they really are.

Port have been minor premiers two years running. Marshall, Georgiades, Rozee, Dursmaa & Butters all a year more experienced.

Bringing in another goal kicker in Finlayson.

Injuries to Dixon, Fantasia & now Lycett haven't helped but aren't top sides meant to have depth.

Got to beat up on whatever this Eagles team is and pinched a win against a very inaccurate St Kilda. They need to win Friday night against a Dogs team that's very up and down at the moment.

Yeah I’m on Port too, by virtue of them being so much worse than I predicted. Essendon, North and WCE were always going to be bad and the expectations weren’t as high for any of the others as they were for Port

Essendon defeated 1 top 8 side in 2021. 7 of their 11 wins came against the bottom 6.

Yeah, they've had some bad moments, but the hype on them over the summer completely overlooked that formline, so have we not just seen the consequence of a tougher draw?

I reckon Port, being a genuine chance for top 4 and with a decent age profile have been the biggest disappointment so far.

Losing Ben King pre-season is a massive loss. They're still disappointing but it is a big factor

Yeah but Nick Cox is a fantastic runner for a 200cm player. I wish the commentators would point that out occasionally.

GWS.

Essendon on paper look bad but really with the fixture they’ve had there weren’t too many opportunities for wins you’d have expected them to take with the exception of the Collingwood game. Playing like a 9-12 team which is about their range.

Essendon's 150th is looking even worse than Carlton's 150th

It's pretty clear that they relied on peak form Stringer & Tippa to get shit done last year. Their youth is still in the works & their midfield is no where near as good as you'd expect from one with two AA jackets in the guts of it.

Port
Both sides of fan base now really upset
The happy clappers (support our Ken) thought there would be grand final/ premiership contenders, instead they are 2-5 and somewhat fortunate that wet weather stuffed the Saint's skills
The #sackhinkley crowd now disappointed that 2 wins might start a roll on that gets them to 10th and keeps Hinkley's job
