Edited removed platten despite thinking he was very underrated for his talent the ability to be clean especially in wet muddy conditions and an excellent 2 sided kick. Added Cyril an obvious oversight.

I would love to hear opinions and eventually do a poll on the most talented hawk to ever play. My nominations are Peter Hudson or Cyril Rioli or Darren Jarman or Lance Franklin. Discuss.

I was a kid in rugby league territory in the 80s so followed from afar, I clearly never watched in person in the 70s so can't comment on Huddo, Lethal or players from that era also. Cyril and Buddy were freaks and watching both in person is something I am blessed to have been able to do. For mine, and granted the scope I have is limited compared to other posters here, Sam Mitchell is who I would put as the most talented. He didn't have anything remotely close to the natural gifts of a Buddy or Cyril but what he could do on the field was just as, or sometimes even more impactful. His ability to always have space despite his lack of pace was uncanny. His skill on both feet was just sublime. His vision on field was just brilliant and his footy IQ is off the charts. He was the kind of player that when the ball was in his hands you just felt instantly at ease. Consider the calibre of players he played with also and that he was still able to end up with the second-most Brownlow votes in history at the time of his retirement is a testament to just how good he was.

By 'talented', you mean freakishly naturally gifted? Platten was more of a hard working gut runner, hooverer of the ball, so listing him confuses me. If that's the case, Dunstall has to be there, or a Lethal, Mitchell, Crawford, etc. But in terms of natural inate ability to do things anyone else is incapable of, then top 5 would have to be Cyril, Jarman, Hudson, Buddy and Knights.

When it comes to sheer raw natural ability, the best 2 players I've ever seen in terms of making the game look easy were Phil Carman and Darren Jarman. So therefore, my pick is an easy one, Darren Jarman. Huddo is my all-time favourite, but he was more of a freak, you can't teach players what he could do.

Further to this - by ‘Hawthorn player’ are we talking about what the player produced in Hawthorn colours, or the sheer talent that he possessed?

For example, Jarman was one of the most talented to play the game but some of his finest moments were as a Crow.
