No deal McCutcheon!
AFL Club
Essendon
I've had some time to calm down after the game on Saturday. It was so flat the whole night, I'm not sure why but even when we took off in the first I just couldn't get into it. The only time I got into it and hoped we would fire up was after the bump to Neagle and we went to remonstrate, but nothing happened. The coach just isn't getting the players to bond, play for him and each other.

Where was the mongrel that was promised after the loss to Melbourne?

Some of the selections, positional decisions and parts of his game day coaching have baffled me. Our game plan has fallen apart and it looks to me like there isn't much adaptation or many changes being made by the coach to counter this. It worries me so much and makes me question whether he is up to it.

What do we do moving forward? This year? Pre-season? Coach and Players? Next year?

This year: We certainly have to blood the youngsters including Hardingham, Marigliani, Houli, Myers, Atkinson etc to indicate whether or not they are up to it. If they show something but aren't for us put them on the table and grab a pick for them. I say stick with Knights for now. It won't achieve much by making a knee-jerk reaction and sacking him here and now. It might appease the supporters, but nothing else. If he can show he can adapt and show some initiative that leads to improvement then we keep him on.

Pre-Season: Top to bottom evaluation of the club. The coach, the support staff, development coaches, recruiters, players and the board. Take a good hard and honest look at the club and respond to the findings. Should there not be improvement over this next month and a half then Knights should go. Even if the results do not improve I just want to see better body language from the players towards the coach and in their actions on field. Working harder for each other and the coach. It is a damning thing that the players are not responding to the coach at the moment. As a result of the assessment of the club the deficiencies (such as the midfield) should be worked on by trading for picks or current midfielders.

Players and Coach: As I have mentioned; coach and players to be assessed and appropriate action taken. Possibly a new coach appointed, dead-wood delisted/traded, recruitment of midfielders!

What does everyone else think? What is the appropriate action for here and now? Even Hirdy is baffled as to what is going and and where to go from here. It's so hurtful to be witnessing these pathetic performances on and off the field.

NB: Apologies, but I felt this was worthy of its own thread since I could not find a thread this would fit under. Feel free to merge should I have missed a place for this to go.

Nice post mate. :thumbsu: Only one point I'd like to make...

After 3 years in charge, we all know that Knights has shown very little initiative, and I can't see anything changing in a hurry.

I see Hardwick and Scott being much better coaches already, for now and the long term...

Knights has had a two year head start on them and still can't get his act together..

That's just sad.

When i was watching the game, the eagles were completely dominant in the midfield. Our midfield has been getting thumped by all teams this season hyet we managed to win almost every contest bar the turn overs. Essendon have a massive midfield problem. Fwd line of all clubs appear weak at certain times and backmen are usually a result of whats happening further up the ground.
I don't know many bomber midfielders but the supposed gun Watson was unsighted. He was being tagged by scott selwood but surely should have been able to overcome him...
Your midfielders need to lift there game.

I would say LEARN DEFENSIVE TACTICS. I teach the boys to run from behind the ball and make sure they don't all front run when we do have it.
Continue to play the likes of Hooker, Pears, Hurley and Gumby at all costs, keep Laycock on the list. I would try to increase our midfield base, get Longergan, McVeigh, Zaka, Milky etc all in there next year for short busts.
There is a lot we need to do. Hopefully we can secure another mid in the draft.
