Interesting the calls for collingwood to not play marley Williams whilst Newman barely rates a footnote

The perception of an anti WA bias in the Vic media has gone missing on this issue. Both players are awaiting sentencing after being found guilty if the same charge yet only the collingwood player is being pressured to be stood aside

Even if Buckley is making an explanation mark by selecting him according to that football doyen caro

Would you feel it unjustly lenient if he was to avoid a custodial sentence?

He'll get a prison sentence... the question is whether it'll be suspended ...

Should he do time? Well if we are serious about addressing random violence then probably...

From a West Coast perspective I could live with him avoiding time

It's actually evidence of the cause of the bias. Almost total ignorance of anything that happens to players outside of Melbourne ....

Ignorant folk displaying their ignorance ...

Newman playing without sanction from the AFL means they can't really touch Williams and TBH I don't think most care re the pre season ...

For a bin tang singlet wearing bogan you make a fair point

The only difference (other than the specifics of the matters which are obviously highly important) is that Newman will be sentenced before round 1, Williams won't be.

But the lack of mention of Newman in the news is significant

Williams has a higher profile because he's in and about their 22 whilst Newman is still battling to get off the rookie list. If Newman was best 22 he would also be getting more scrutiny.

I think that's the main point as well.

Just a few days until the sentencing, and we find out how things will bode for Muzza.

Is anyone planning on heading down to find out what happens? With Barrass on the LTI list, we're probably going to upgrade either Newman or Sinclair for the duration of that injury and there's no doubt that Friday's sentencing will factor into the decision.

In the event he is lucky enough to not go to prison will be interesting to see if the DPP appeal

If they do, when would we find that out? And how long would that process take?

The more I think about it, the more I think that we'll be upgrading Sinclair to the LTI spot (he needs game time if we want him around next year, and even with Lycett around Cox and Naitanui will probably both need a fair amount of resting). Newman on the other hand is on a new rookie contract which means he should still be contracted next year if I understand it correctly.

There's also a reasonable chance that Waters might end up as another LTI later this season if he opts for shoulder surgery (hopefully no one else is an LTI prospect!), and if so we could potentially upgrade Newman then if Friday goes well for him.

I think they have 21 days to appeal. Though I would highly doubt they'd bother to appeal a suspended sentence. It's just not important enough of a matter for the DPP to take a stand over.

You'd be surprised.. if it is below range they will appeal.. 16 months in WA v Strawbridge in 2005 was turned into 2 years 8 months because it was manifestly inadequate.
We have seen the ranges in that link provided. None (if any?) were suspended....

You think he's gone don't you? Do we do nearest the pin?

Not necessarily... it *sigh* :P just doesn't bode well for Muzza that any were suspended.. however in saying that they are only WASC decisions which means we aren't seeing a lot of the WADC ones which generally aren't reported. So some of the lower-scale decisions may bode well for Muzza.
Dunno really, the Trompler decision identifies 3 areas which go to the overall criminality of GBH in WA - nature of harm, nature of act and background circumstances.... nature = no weapon, nature = unprovoked punch (could be tied in with the one punch deterrence), background = fb threats, jealousy etc..
Who knows..

Was Newman left out of the team because of the findings tomorrow? Would he have made the team?

With the 6 oclock start he couldn't be considered as he needs time to pack his jammies and toothbrush just in case.
