why dont they have the draft picks based on the ladder after round 15. At that point everyone has played each other once so the uneven draw doesn't come into it. the teams at the bottom at round 15 will be pretty similar to at the end of the year, so it will still be equalising the comp. And for the last 7 rounds there is no incentive to lose.

Why do we need these "lottery" proposals ? The draft is okay as it is; particularly with "extra" picks for poor performance being now moved to the END of the first round. What the AFL has to do now is simplify the salary cap by making it the same figure for all the teams and clean up the "father/son" mess !

I think that before each round clubs must nominate if they are taking a father/son pick. If they say no and a father/son gets picked up before the round they want him then too bad. I think thats similar to Eade's idea.

I am amazed that this thread has not died... cred for thinking but WRONG

Look at the ladder Adelaide, W Coast, Sydney..... none have been at the bottom 4 "trough" more than once in the last 10 years

Yes it would be nice to have a Kosi, Reiwoldt, Goodard etc etc.... but there are alot more factors.... have a nice GT ( with a twist of lemon) and go to Bonnie Doon or the pictures or F'n Sth Africa :)

Overrated this draft stuff ( Goodes *& O'Loughlin were circa 40ish picks) ....too much obsession on a few stars .. people more than ever it takes a TEAM of close to your best 22 on the park at the end.... thats all.. !!!!!!!!!!!!! if ever there was proof.. last year 2005 Crows and Eagles and Saints clearly on paper were a much better team of names ... History.. NO CIGAR! ( no matera, no riccuto)

Roos.... the most recent retired coach and a champion .. is hall of fame.. will be dead cert eventually for AFL LEGEND....

... for several ...Toot! Toot!... catch up with the bus!:D

Good point. It is a weakness (no system is perfect!). But would a team really tank when they could make the eight? Wouldn't 8th be better for the exposure and experience of playing finals?
I'm not saying the teams would tank to finish 9th (nor do I think a team will tank to finish last for that matter), but there will be many people who will use that argument when a team finishes 9th. However, in your system, the advantages of finishing 9th do, IMO, outweigh those of finishing 8th.

How about giving pick 1 to the team that finishes 14th, pick 2 to 15th and pick 3 to 16th?

How does that stop the perception of tanking if Round 22 is 13th v 14th. If anything it makes it even worse, as finishing 13th or 14th really is no different to supporters. There is no stigma of getting "the wooden spoon". But under your system the outcome of the game could decide #1 or #4 draft pick.

Sydney Eagle: I tend to agree with you. The system is ok. It's just peoples perception is that clubs are going all out to finish as low as possible. The unequal salary cap is detrimental to the entire notion of creating an even competition, as is the current method of selecting father-son picks. (I think that the club should be able to get the player, but have to pay market value).

This would help solve the problem of tanking, if it was a problem.

In the past few weeks it has become incredibly clear the bottom clubs are not tanking. We've seen big upsets to Essendon, Carlton, Port and all the teams near the bottom have been winning or damn close to it.
