My response to Alf's thread - has the site changed?

Below is my response to another thread. My question is - Has ANY attempt to stop trolling on this site EVER succeeded? If not why not? What are the solutions? Or should we just forget about it?

While I don't disagree with the theme of your post.

When the Collingwood legions hit bigfooty (after Nick's site looked like folding) many people felt the same way about the Bigfooty site...

Except it was the ridiculous abuse from Collingwood supporting posters that was creating the problem.

At the end of the day - LIVE BY THE SWORD, DIE BY THE SWORD!

I have been posting on and following this site since preseason 2000. I rarely post because there is so much rubbish.

I preferred to be unregistered as 'Hawkforce' but weight of opinion (and the site's redesign!) convinced me that I should just live with the "censorship" of registration in the hope that the quality of posting would improve.

WHAT A FRIGGIN FURPHY THAT PROVED TO BE! I HOPE EVERYONE WHO ARGUED FOR SELF-IMPOSED CENSORSHIP HAS LEARNT THEIR LESSON!!!!!!

Alf, you have to understand that, despite what a great guy Joffa may be in real life, his posts are inflammatory - they attract the response of the people you mentioned.

I would even argue that Joffa DESERVES the treatment he attracts.

There are other sites - where there is peace and tranquillity, and where Karl/G4E/Turlough's occasional posts never attract more than a fleeting bite of derision.

To suggest that this is an exercise in "Collingwood bashing" displays the pathetic and limp arrogance that attracts the rubbish in the first place - MOST OF THE TIME YOU DESERVE THE ***** YOU GET!

You have NO idea how hard it was when you guys infested the site from Nick's. The site turned into the slanging match from hell - AND YOU ARE BLAMING THE SITE?

WHAT ABOUT THE FRIGGIN COLLINGWOOD SUPPORTERS?!?!?!?

There was even one pie fan (a longstanding regular) begging the newcomers to stop inciting and flaming the site - did you guys take any notice?!?!

As said above - LIVE BY THE SWORD - DIE BY THE SWORD!!!

My suggestion is to stop living by the sword... but, as no one has ever taken my advice on this site before then I shall assume that you won't and in that case my answer is...

Stop whining!

While I agree with the essence of your post Hawkforce I disagree with some of the detail.

You're right, Big Footy did change with the arrival of the Magpie Army. You would expect it to. That situation was created artificially by the impending closure of Nick's board and resulted in a large number of Collingwood fans arriving here simultaneously. If those fans had arrived over a period of time they would have assimilated individually and not caused the upheaval that they did. We were new boys, but we were in a group so we didn't suffer the same individual initiation period that new people normally go through. It wasn't surprising that our arrival caused change and that existing users resisted the change.

We were loud, politically incorrect and sometimes abusive, no different to many other new people establishing themselves here. There were just a lot of us.

Joffa is Joffa, just as Dan is Dan, Rooboy is Rooboy etc. You either like him, hate him or couldn't give a toss about him. In any case he is who he is. He's passionate, loud and offensive, but he's honest and if you look at it honestly has done little to deserve the venom that is directed against him.

The current wave of mindless anti-Collingwood drivel is different to anything I've seen here before. Karl was a problem for a while, but his campaign wasn't aimed at an individual or even a single Club, he just loved to get a reaction, from anybody.

There is more to the current issue than meets the eye. Whether it is an individual with many aliases or a group, the energy that has been put into it and the time span involved is much greater than would be reasonably be expected from such d ickwipes (thanks Alf). This is being driven from somewhere else. Someone has an ulterior motive.

That aside, the whole thing would fall flat if the d ickwipes were ignored. The trouble with that is that there is always someone who just can't not react and has the perfect 'comeback'. Then it escalates and ends up satisfying the primal urges of the d ickwipe.

Let me tell you something, the d ickwipes are actually more advanced than the people they are attacking. They understand that the post is nothing if it is not read and reacted to, so they are happy with any reaction - clever, indignant, supportive, a call for Bluey's intervention, it doesn't matter. There is no such thing as the perfect 'comeback' for these sickos because they are happy with anything.

Where is the threat in what they do? Is a bunch of words on a screen going to cause you any physical harm? What's going to happen to you if you ignore it? Are you going to suffer some grave humiliation if you don't respond?

A forum is what you make it. If you want to read the crap and decide to feel indignant and self righteous then the forum is going to be a constant pain in the arse for you, but it's a pain that you have chosen.

How stupid do the d ickwipes look when left in isolation.

I know it won't happen, because the d ickwipes are always there, because the thin-skinned amongst are also always there and they will always get a bite.

Another problem is the allowance of "senior' bigfooty posters to get away with murder, then have their case heard when the tears start. Prime example is Joffa. I couldn't give a toss what that bloke says or does, but to see him whinge and belly ache he's been hard done by or abused is a joke. Hell this guy wrote the book abusing people, and to the little kids he's marta for them (well they won't know what that means but the rest of us do ). The double standards have come back and bitten everyone on the arse. Give people enough rope ............

My thread is more of a reaction to people telling me HOW the site SHOULD be.

There is little use in complaining about ****e if you post ****e.

I think Alf's posts are often excellent - but often they are little more than what I call the "Collingwood cultural cringe" - ultra defensiveness and abusiveness to any form of criticism of Collingwood.

I hope everyone understands that I am not defending the idiocy of what Alf calls the "abusers" - I am just trying to point out that there is a CAUSE and EFFECT.

There was a settling in period and I think the site is richer for the influx when Nick's site almost went down. I just object to Alf's take on it

Grow up FJD. For a start - which you havent realised - Joffa HAS been banned before. For doing the exact same thing your doing. Then he was allowed back - and changed his attitude. Its brainless twerps like yourself that make this board dissapointing. Not Joffa.
