what side would you like to see named for round 1 of the NAB cup this year? my side would look something like this. (think NAB cup rules allow 6 on the bench.) probably forgotten a few but its harder than it looks.

FB: C.Garland S.Martin R.Pettered

HB: S.Buckley, J.Rivers(if fit??) B.Green

C: C.Bruce C.Morton C.Sylvia

HF: J.Watts, M.Bate A.Maaric

FF: A.Wonnaemiri,B.Miller A.Davey

FOLL: P.Johnson, B.McLean, N.Jones

INT: J.Spencer, S.Blease, N.Jetta , J.Grimes, M.Newton, S. Buckley

The side looks great on paper but you have placed Buckley on their twice and i don't think you are allowed to have that many over 24 yo players (although i am known to be wrong).

How ever i think players like Rohan, Bennell, Jurrah and Strauss will be placed in there somewhere.

FB: C.Garland S.Martin J.Bennell

HB: R.Petterd, J.Rivers(if fit??)/M.Warnock B.Green

C: C.Bruce, C.Morton, R.Bail

HF: M. Bate, B.Miller, A.Maaric

FF: A.Wonnaemiri, J.Watts, A.Davey

FOLL: P.Johnson, B.McLean, N.Jones

INT: J.Spencer, S.Blease, N.Jetta , J.Grimes, L.Jurrah S. Buckley

I've just whipped this one up quickly at work including as many kids as possible, plus excluding anyone that had surgery or problems in the off season who I usually would've included in a hearbeat. aka McLean, Rivers PJ etc Giving Bruce and Green a rest for Round 1 too

I've also chucked in a few players that providing they don't show much in the NAB cup I can't see them holding a spot in the regular season eg The Meese & Juice

FB: T.McNamara S.Martin J.Strauss

HB: R.Petterd C.Garland J.Grimes

C: S.Blease C.Morton C.Sylvia

HF: A.Davey J.Watts J.Bennell

FF: L.Jurrah M.Newton A.Maric

FOLL: J.Spencer N.Jones S.Buckley

INT: J.Meesen N.Jetta A.Wonnaemiri J.Frawley R.Bail K.Cheney

Goddamn that's a young side...

F: A Wonaeamirri; M Newton; L Jurrah
R: J Spencer; B McLean; N Jones
I: J Meesen; C Bartram; L Dunn; J Bennell; A Maric; S Blease

It's very hard...

thats still a little optimistic, thats close to our best side (except for the backline).
yeahh i did that on purpose as i'd like to see the Dees go well in the NAB cup, if we won a few games that could only be good for membership sales as well as a little bit extra money.

No Garland or Bruce? are you assuming these two will be rested?

When did this get introduced?

Lets win the damn thing please, instead of getting knocked out in the first round.

I suppose having the reigning premier twice in two years first up is just a tad harsh.

Im having 2 cracks...My speculative side which will see young kids (bold players are first timers) given a chance

Then a team that could net us the NAB Cup and the $$ that come with us (and hopefully some memberships).

Melbourne need their best side in this match. Hawthorn will have 6-7 premiership players out, so it is a great chance for the dees to win, get some massive exposure, as people dont care about who was in or out, it is still an "official" match, and if you could win, supporters would come out of the woodwork in massive numbers, and could really help out your club

nab cup means nothing its just a practice match we dont wont our good players injured before round 1 has even started

Did Warnock get hit by a bus? Surely he's done enough to get a game. Blooding kids is fine, but lets try and get SOME actual preparation for the season happening.
warnock for sure he is the type of player that needs as many games as possible under his belt he will get better with every game

Imo, and probably most others, Nab cup means a LOT for us.
First of all, we will gain a fair amount of exposure if we do well, 16th knocking off the premiers in round one would create that, winning would be fantastic.
Secondly, the prize money is more valuable to us than it as to most other clubs.
Thirdly, we may as well get some miles into the legs of our players, because chances are that we will be bottom of the ladder again, so as much experience in a winning team for all our players is essential.
Fourthly, if all our players are playing in this, then we won't be accused of tanking when they legitimately need a rest later in the season.

no, you want to win it. The prize money will help your club, and winning it would bring in more members/merch sales.

Realisticly, your team will be lucky to win more then 8 games in 2009, The NAB cup will ensure that you dont walk away further in the shitter then you did in 2008

Thanks. I'm sure you mean well, but i don't think we could 'win' the NAB Cup even if we set that as our task (8 wins would be optimistic at this stage too)... I don't think winning the NAB cup will make one iota of a difference to our long term viability as an AFL club anyway.

How many pre-season flags did Hawthorn win after Clarkson took over?? and considering Hawthorn's financial turmoil at the time...

With all due respect, performance in the NAB cup is meaningless, both in the short term flag prospects of a team, and their long term financial viabilty..

We need to attract supporters to the club by getting into communities and building grass-roots support, something which we have been historically hopeless at..The NAB Cup is an inadequate short term fix IMO for teams looking to improve their prospects. I mean we 'could' win it, but 6 weeks later people would have forgotten about us...Its not the ideal way to build a supporter base IMO...

It may not be the ideal way to build a supporter base, but it helps, something else which helps is money, and we need as much of that as possible.
Seeing as you don't get any if bomb out in the first round, we'd be hoping to beat Hawthorn, winning it brings us in 500k? or is it 1mil? Whatever it is, there's a lot of money on the table, and I'd like to think that our best team would at least be able to compete against a geelong missing it's best 7-8.

It gains some short term exposure, which is handy, as well as playing it's 'challenge' matches out in the sticks, which is what we need to gain more of a grassroots following.

Yeah true we do need the money. Don't think its a 1 mil. prizemoney though... But if it means Bailey has to modify the way we do our pre-season so we can win the NAB, and then we bomb during the main season like Carlton did twice in recent years, then it would be questionable how worthwhile an exercise it is.

Plus, i was down at skilled stadium back in last feb. to see the opening cup fixture against Geelong, and they had the majority of their premiership team playing and walloped us accordingly. Teams don't necessarily rest all their stars, and the further you go on in the competition, the more likely you are to face a full stregth side...

So i mean you're right, we could really do with the prizemoney, but I just think there's a chance we'll comprimise our prospects in the full season if we push too hard too early :thumbsu:

hawthorn just didnt have the list to manage it. each year we have gone out hoping to win it, getting to the 2nd week twice, and the 3rd week once.

Hawthorn didnt have the small support-base either compared to the dee's. We also had a damn wealthy president/ex-president who was able to pay up to 1 million per season to keep us affloat.

You just need to look at the Blues. NAB cup form has kept their fans onboard (a lot of them would have jumped off a long time ago) and has also given some the incentive to jump onboard.

If your club could win the NAB cup, and improve slightly each year (1-2 wins per season) you will see a 5-10k improvement in membership garunteed.
