With the Nab Cup starting this weekend, what does everyone think of our chances of winning our first nab/wizard cup game since 2002?
Also by chance if we do win (not that it matters if we dont) who would we be playing the following week? and where?

Don't like our chances, but you never know. Roosy has already said that we will only have handful of senior player's making an apprearance, and the rest of the team will be made up of youngsters. The winner of our game will play either Port Adelaide (AAMI) or Carlton (Telstra Dome) the following week.

It's interesting to note that first round losers in the NAB Cup will recieve $0 in prize money. This is a change from previous years where first rounder losers recieved prize money. The winner will also recieve $385,000, up from $220,000 last year. So it's definately worth winning based on those figures.

I reckon the new interchange rules turn a victory from improbable to impossible. If, by some means, the ACTAFL champions were a couple of goals up midway through the final quarter, I suspect Roos would take half a dozen players off, just to ensure they lose. He'll want to get back to playing "normal" rules in week 2 so he can ease his senior players back into match practice at the pace he chooses.

who cares if we win or lose!

as long as we show off the "young bloods" we have on our list.

...........hopefully it will shut up the so called experts who claim we dont have youth!!!!!!!

we have no chance of winning, it's never been part of roos' plan, and there seems no suggestion he's changed
best thign we can hope for is seeing the young blokes go around

amusing to see on a coupla threads on the main board how excited fans of other clubs are getting about some of their "big" kids, such as hawkins at geelong, who's apparently 101kg (slimmed down a bit, in fact) and coupla others
while we have jesse white at about 110kg and 196-7cm, but no one's said a thing
i like that we're so underestimated for our young talent, let's hope a few can "shake down some thunder" in the next 4-5 weeks

Can't wait to see the young bloods. Got my membership in the mail today and am pumped for some footy.

I'm kinda hoping us and Carlton win. That way the Swans will be playing at the Dome the following week !!! I'll be able to go to that one!!

Bloods1, if we do lose. Will that mean the swans other paraccy matches will be up in Sydeny?? or a bit of everywhere??

I really depends on who the AFL fixture us up against. It's anyones guess really. Being in Melbourne though I would love to see us play down here. We rarely see them during the pre season.

The AFL usually brings out a media release as to who the losers from the NAB Cup play the following week. As soon as I find out I'll let u know. ;)

More rational side of (whats left of my) brain says .... what does it prove ? not a chance in hell, never taken it serious b4 and ....ROK Bolts and few others will feel they been dropped to the twos!!

But depending on how well Hawthorn stack their side ....they have been our bunnies for a while!!!!.... and there ought be a lot of the young gun ACTFL premiers itchin to impress!.... it wont be easy for the Dorks and Swans really do all have to be ready to fire R1 this year

Tippin a miraculous win!:):D

you're an uber optimist
in fact, that's beyond optimism
i would LOVE to see it, but i think they're gonna go in with a very strong side
it would be lovely to just choke up those cocky hawks fans with a shock win, by crikey that'd have him whinging and crying and making excuses all the way to round 1, but i just can't see it
i'd like it even more coz we'd get to see our kids in a proper match for another week
but i reckon if we stay within 6-8 goals by the finish, we will have done okay

good
call liz about the actafl champions, thats what roosy would do.
interesting call by malthouse and thompson that the coaches haven't been consulted about the new interchange restrictions in the nab cup.
64 interchanges a match, roos said we had 83 in our nab match last year ( we only ever have 1)
adrian anderson is out of control, why keep changing the rules.

i think sheeds wrote in a column last week (well, someone did) that this rule change specifically, and others generally, seem designed just to pss roosy off ... and in a way, he's kinda right, coz a lot of the rule changes in the past 2 years have been aimed at "opening up" footy, making it "more attacking" and trying to nullify as much as possible the style of football roos perfected to the point of winning the 05 flag and embarrassing the pants off demetriou
i know that sounds paranoid, but when sheedy mentions it, you have to wonder

i always kinda hope we lose the nab cup i find it pointless, just play a few practice games, or start the real stuff. Id rather lose round 1 nab and be a premiership contender any day of the week

In The Age today;

"THE Sydney Swans could virtually concede defeat in their NAB Cup match against Hawthorn in Launceston on Sunday week by leaving out most of their big-name players because of the new trial rule limiting the number of interchanges.

At least six players who might have been selected for the match under normal conditions - Adam Goodes, Brett Kirk, Craig Bolton, Luke Ablett, Ben Mathews and Jude Bolton - are unlikely to be selected because of fears that they are not yet fit enough to play the extra minutes that would be required under the trial rule restricting clubs to just 16 changes per quarter.

The Swans were already almost certain to be without Barry Hall, Darren Jolly, Michael O'Loughlin, Leo Barry and Tadhg Kennelly, who are on limited training programs, while Peter Everitt and Nic Fosdike are sidelined by injuries suffered during the pre-season, meaning they will be relying on a large contingent of youngsters and rookie listed players."

Lets face it, no one really cares about the NAB Cup. It's great to see us giving our youngsters a go instead of our senior player's. The result is irrelevant IMO and is vindicated by the stance Roosy has taken. Should be quite exciting though.

Agree bloods01

If the AFL are going to make stupid rules that are not helpful for the players during the pre season comp. which is nothing more than a bunch of glorified practice matches, than there is no point risking our main core players.

Lets lose and be done with it.

plus its the one opportunity for our young players to play at a decent level, because the rest of the year they are in a sub par competitiion. We already know what our best players are capable of so no need to risk them at all.

not sure where i read it, but it seems roos will play jesse white in the ruck at some point in the preseason
i was hoping currie would be given a run there, and play white in the forwards, but there's no doubt white's a big lump of a lad so if he's up to it, and it means we get to see him at least on the field, well, fair enough
there's a story for tomorrow's media on the barry hall off-season surgery to both groins, eyes and nose, and apparently he is set to be back to his 04-05 form, which sounds very promising

if hall is back to that level we are a premiership chance if u ask me. Will be interesting a lot of people are quick to write him off.

I would like to see currie in the ruck roosy will probably rotate a few through there

it's been mentioned on occasion in the past 2 seasons, but we could do worse than give big baz a run in ruck
he's very athletic, he can jump, he's so strong ... of course, at his 04-05 best, he's the perfect mobile key forward, so the ruck thing is a bit irrelevant
but yes, would like to see currie in ruck, seeing as everitt is recovering from some leg surgery and jolly won't play much preseason

developing one or two ruckman has to be a high priority for the club, we dont have doyle (though with injuries never did really anyway) as a back up anymore and spider cant have more than 2 seasons left, and as we use the stoppages so much its important so be good for roosy to blood a few through there and if possible get a couple of matches into players like currie.

I also agree on hall being good in the ruck, id like to see goodsey play there again in small doses but doubt it will happen, hall missed his mobility more than anything last year, then he can get his marking going and confidence back.

Listening to other poeple talk about Hall is quite interesting. Based on last year everyone thinks he's finished as a footballer. They're in for a rude shock though. It's hard to say whether he'll get back to his best, but anything would be better than last year.

Currie will definately play on Sunday with Spider out. Who knows, he might even be there in Round 1. Spider is touch and go according to Roos for the season opener.

yeah, has to be a big question mark over everitt for the start of the season proper, and i'd love to think currie (or white if it comes to that) would have shown enough, and of course been given the chance to show, through the preseason
as for baz, i've never said he was finished, never entertained the thought
we all know he was restricted by whatever injuries he had last year
yes, he has to show he's recovered, but i'm pretty optimistic about that
i certainly don't have him in the "close to the end" category of crouch or mathews, or the "on notice" category of leo, bevan and mcveigh
