Who can take their game to a new level?

Player needs to have enough ability to become a far more complete and consistant player.

For mine it's Steele Sidebottom.

He has the ability to become elite, but needs to take the next step IMO.

Hopefully in 2012. :thumbsu:

Dawes must become at the very least a consistent threat, even against the best. Far too many games where his marking was exposed and he just looked beaten, the article today makes me think this will improve as he feels that was the case. So the hardwork awaits, won't ever be AA but no reason why he shouldn't kick 40 as the foil to cloke

Sidebottom, needs to get his low 20s into mod to high 20s and become a much more full time mid. Beams too must become more mid the hff

Wellingham should by the end of the year be one of our starting midfielders with Swan, Pendlebury and ball with Thomas on a wing. Personally it's annoying he didn't do that this year.

Didak needs to become the damaging hff he used to be, he may never reach the same levels but he must be better then this year.

One of Elliot, ugle, yagmoor, rounds needs to step up and take that FAST tackling small forward that we missed all year, I know I mentioned two half backs in rounds and yagmoor but both have the abilities to play that position.

Caff needs to find fitness too, otherwise he just isn't anywhere near our best 22

every one of the 2nd tier midfield rotation need to challenge the core group of thomas, pendlebury, swan & ball. if the likes of beams, sidebottom, wellingham & maybe even fasolo can increase our core group to 6 or 7, that would diminish the effect the sub rule has on player rotations.

imagine having 7 elite midfielders in the one team, added to the best defence and a strong marking forward line, with the crumbers from the resting elite mids.

bring on 2012. :D

I was thinking the Same Thing Steele needs to find the Next Gear but he kind of Reminds of when Daisy went quiet for a Season and a Bit

Witts..........he hasn't killed anyone at training yet.
That we've been told about, I think that's why we added some "train on" players.;):p

As for thread topic, Sharrod Wellingham is the clear one for me. He has shown in individual games he has the talent to be close to an elite midfielder, but he has just never been able to consistently perform at the highest level week in, week out.

A non obvious pair are Ben Sinclair and Josh Thomas, it's their 3rd year at the club, and even with bad injury runs, if they don't become at least part of the 25-28 man finals training squad by years end, they could be gone. Both have talent, they just need a little bit of luck and development to reach that next level.

This board has a pretty enigmatic relationship with Steele. He is so often over-rated and then to counter that is so often harshly judged.

He's still young. I can't see him breaking into the midfield full-time just yet. I don't think he needs too and I don't think he is going to just 'jump' another gear. He might improve a little but I think that's the way his improvement will go.

Dawes definitely needs to step up IMO. Not to being a world beater but just needs to give something week in week out.

I am another on the Wellingham bandwagon too. Has shown so much in glimpses. Showed he can lead the midfield against Melbourne. Really want to see him play a really consistent season as a top line mid.

I'll say Cam Wood. Has improved a lot as time goes by admittedly, and continues to. His games late this year were impressive. But still not quite at the level yet where Jolly doesn't have to be the be all and end all.

Yes, he is entering his 8th year in the AFL system (25 next year). Time to start dominating games, or at least beating opponents. He should be taking over from Jolly sometime during the next 12-18 months.
Getting to the 'now or never' stage of his career.
If we are still talking about 'late bloomer' or 'potential' to be number one ruck at seasons end, then I am afraid his time may be up. I hope he has a huge 2012.

From just looking at the thread title I straight away thought Wellingham. He can find the other gear because we've seen it. He just needs to find that gear consistently week in, week out.

Jarryd Blair for mine. He needs to get a lot fitter in 2012 and lose a portion of the weight he put on last year (80kg was too heavy). If he doesn't I fear that he'll just become easy to exploit at his height especially because he isn't overly quick and his time on ball is still extremely limited.

Wellingham - difference between his best and his weekly average is too high.

Dawes - when he was in his good patch early this year, we looked unstoppable

Wood - Jolly's fitness worries me, and atm Wood still holds second best.

Keats had a soft spot for wood. Always had a soft spot for Collingwood ruckman to be honest... However 2011 pre season wood came out and looked massive. Still was as soft as butter but towards the end of the season he deffinatly showed glimpses. Especially up forward. Another 3-4 kHz and a bit of mungrel to him and we'll be a much much better side. Got a feeling I, like others may be writing jolly off a little early however

All of the above. Wood and Wellingham more importantly for me, as they could almost be traded if they have average seasons in 2012 (more so Wood).

I guess Beams, Blair, Sidey, Dawes, all the young players who haven't hit their peak obviously have another gear to hit but I'm not sure that they HAVE to hit that gear to stay in the team. I'm hoping Krakouer hits another gear although he was impressive anyway.

Every player nominated - Beams, Blair, Sidey, Dawes, Wood, Wellingham, Maxwell, Didak - needs to lift. Nearly half the side, which it is if you add O'Brien. Not to mention Sinkers and Thomas II. Jolly probably needs to find some old gears.

Does Fasta 123 truly mean the poet Keats in 'Keats had a soft spot for wood' above? Or was he enlightening us regarding the said poet's sexual persuasion? Or is there a misspelling?

Wellingham. He's just way to inconsistent and puts in more bad ones than good ones. His good games are fantastic but they were about a once in a month proposition in 2011.

Steele I also agree with. I think he shows very little most weeks and his good performances are used as a way of explaining all the average ones. He is good player and could be excellent but he is not justifying his reputation at this stage, not nearly.

Didak will find another gear and be Didak again after a pre-season.

Dawes.

Wood.

Jolly, on his 2011 form or his spot is in trouble IMO.

Beams, in finals. He's brilliant the rest of the time.

there's a few that need to lift
starting with Wellingham..Blair..Wood..Goldy..Dawes..sidey..Beams

then there are those who have reached their potential but need to get back to that level & maintain it Didak..Joilly..Harry
And a heap of yoounger boys that need to come into the seniors

Same 3 I was thinking.

Wellingham has the potential to be a fairly elite player. Not of the Swan/Ablett/Judd level, but well above average.

Dawes - has huge potential.

Wood - I dont like the guy, but as it stands he is our next best option.
