Who are your top 5 players, from anyside, you've witnessed and seen in your time? I'm not asking about players before you were born. Who are the players that have made you take notice the most.

I was born in 72 so I've been watching footy since prob. 75 onwards -

Heres mine-

1. Tony Locket
2. Phil and Jimmy Krakour (Cant seperate 'em)
3. Gary Ablett
4. Leign Matthews
5. Keith Grieg

Isn't that 6? ;)

Mine would probably be:

Carey, Hird, Lockett, Ablett & Madden in no particular order.

In no particular order:

James Hird (just a pleasure to watch him play really. Absolute star, regardless of his injuries)

Simon Madden (revolutionised ruckwork. the first modern day follower. Superstar. I will never forget just how good this bloke was.)

Michael Voss (leader, star, everything you would want in a footballer)

Michael Roach (people under 30 years old just don't realise how good a footballer this bloke was. He was everything. Great mark, great kick and great everything. He was the best full forward I have ever seen play the game)

Gary Ablett Snr (no explanation required)

I intentionally didnt read the responses before i clicked as i didnt want to be influnced.

1. Leigh Matthews
2. Ron Barassi
3. Wayne Carey
4. Simon Madden
5. Darren Jarman (A personal Choice, Ii so loved watching him play, even at the Crows.)

1. Leigh Matthews
2. Peter Hudson
3. Dermott Brereton
4. Jason Dunstall
5. Michael Tuck

There you have arguably the greatest player ever, three of the greatest key forwards to play the game and the player with the most VFL/AFL games in history.

3. Greg Williams
4. James Hird
5. Michael Voss
6. Jason Dunstall

hard thread, the 1st games i remember watching were in the late 70s/early 80s

not in any particular order
bartlett
daicos
carey
ablett srn
ablett jrn
kouta
hird
locket
SOS
judd
matthews
D. jarman

looking back at previous posts i see no daicos, IMO he was better than matthews, injurys robbed the bloke of his true potential, remade himself as a small forward in 1990 and kicked 99 goals, GUN.

i know its a big call even mentioning his name in the same breath as matthews, but i seen them both play and in the modern game where you cant "assult" opposition players i reckon id go for daicos, similer game to goal ratio if you consider daicos played the 1st few years as a centreman, i wouldnt put him in my top 5 but for those who've named 10 id have him in.

In no order,
Carey
Lockett
Ablett snr
Simon Madden
Greg Williams/Robert Harvey, can't split those two sorry.

richo
ablett sr
ablett jr
bartlett
lockett

named them in liking but they are just as good as 50 other players i could rate as best players of all time....should of asked to name a top 50

put richo in a quality team over a fair period and there wouldve been fireworks, its a shame he was hindered by playing for an inferiour team because i reckon he couldve been a megastar, i probably should've put him on my list as well.

Carey, Ablett, Voss, Hird, Lockett

Carey and Ablett are locks in the top 5. The rest you can debate. They both may have had trouble off field but as footballers these 2 will be right at the top of the greats of all time.

Hird
Ablett Sr
Carey
G. Williams
Matthews
