Living in Geelong I would like to get some views on what people think about keeping Nathan Ablett on the list. I dont understand why, he is keeping a youngster off the list, the club should have put there foot down and said you have til this time to decide or else we cut you off the list. Why are they taking the soft cotton wool approach its a business and if he doesnt want to be there then sack him. Or is it because they dont want to upset Gary Ablett. If he decided to come back when he feels like, myself as a player would be a bit pissed off knowing that you did all the hard work and this kid comes back whenever he feels like it.

Being an outsider I dont think Nathan is that good anyway and the club is that strong they really dont need him, maybe there is a loop hole that I havent read about or it wont effect the list, but to me I would rather have a kid on the list that could benefit from growing as a player around the best team in the comp than pay Nathan base salary.
Does he get paid out his contract cos he is the one that quit?

**no aggressive whingers reply thinking I'm coming on here to have a crack at Geelong I get it enough from people who live in the town***

Why take him off it?

It was too late to replace him. Better to leave him on in the off-chance he would come back rather than go one man down.

And his salary counted towards the cap anyway IIRC.

Why keep him on the list? His name is Ablett. Same reason he got a game.:)

Think it's pretty simple:

1. His salary was to count toward the cap anyway and he was on the final list so he could not be replaced; and

2. In the event he wants to come back at the end of '08, we don't have to fight other clubs to draft him again.

If you don't want critical responses you'd best check your facts before criticising the club for something out of it's control.

Once final list lodgements take place a player cannot be delisted until the end of the season.

Sacking Nathan at any time after his retirement would achieve absolutely nothing for this season.
It wouldn't free up a space for a youngster, nor would it free up cap room.

Totally true there EY, however you have to remember that not everyone is up to the terms of being an AFL club, i.e. lodgement of lists and such.

Maybe this wasn't explained in clear terms earlier, but agree with most on the board. GFC didn't have a choice as their list was already in, so better to keep him on it on the chance he did come back later in the year.

I am not critising the club, it seems strange that surely this retirement didnt come out the blue they would have had time to finalise there list and would have had a fair idea if he was keen

STFU dipstick
Stick to pumping up Jane Hunt after he craps his dacks against StKilda again. He has a habit of packing darkies in Saints games.

Bucks
N Ablett is still on the list because he's a contracted player. It's the same at Brisbane where Beau McDonald retired but is still on Brisbanes list.

They tried to talk him out of it for a while and they took a risk by letting the final list date pass. Once the date passed and he had made up his mind, there was nothing the club could do.

If he chooses to play, he will be a great player. He is worth keeping on the list an extra two years, even only to keep him off collingwoods list if he came back through the draft.

Just saw on the news that he has been going to the club at night to work out. Maybe reconsidering his options.. who knows:confused:

Secret comeback! one day we see out of the blue

In: N Ablett Out: Byrnes

Byrnes / N.Ablett totally different roles, stop playing favourites. The structure of the team allows for only one of the two below. N.Ablett is history, Hawkins is the future.... let Nath hammer his nails. ;)

Thats bollocks a lot of teams successfully run 3 talls and N.Ablett would add to our forward scoring power a lot more than byrnes does.

FF: Gamble Hawkins N.Ablett
HF: Chapman Mooney Johnson

nothing wrong with that especially when all 3 talls can rotate through all 3 positions.

On the sacking of ablett I think it is better to let him decide if he doesn't want to continue after the season then delist him amicably as dont want to have his brother p155ed off and also walking for extra cash :)

Nathan would be a lot less reluctant if he was just another dude getting a game. The fact that he's Nathan Ablett Son Of Gary Ablett Greatest Player Ever In The Hoops is the reason for all this crap in the first place.

Pretty bloody simple really. By the time he had decided the cut offs for delistings had come. Maybe the club allowed him too much time? Problem with that is with Geelong winning the flag, celebrations, etc it wasn't until later than usual that the players got some time off. The club and Nathan was never really going to have time before the cut off.

Amen.

I know it counts for the salary cap regardless but would Nate have forfeited any actual money owed to him for terminating his contract early? Are the GFC paying him out for this year?
He's being paid the base salary this year.
Unfortunately in regards to AFL I think he's quite happy playing the playstation.

Go CATS!!

Nathe has been hanging round the club a bit, and although it's probably just to snag a few free Gatorades, I'd love to think he's wanting to come back.
