Nathan should be played as a CHF or a FF?

How many goals would he kick as a FF?

Personally, I think he is a natural CHF, especially seeing as his teammates are finally passing it to him. I got so annoyed at times last year when players like Ling wouldn't kick it to him. Perhaps they were teaching him to run to better spots, but time after time he would be free and they wouldn't.

On Saturday night he really was the go-to man and boy did he have a good game. There won't be any of these problems ever again I would say.

So the question, would he be a better CHF or FF?

Nath is a natural CHF. Good mobility, can cover a fair bit of turf. Sort of the Riewoldt mould.

Hawkins is a fat bastard who sits in the square and kicks goals.

But then where does Mooney play. I think Mooney and NAblett should just swop throughout the match, and try and work out which opponent would be less comfortable at CHB and Fb. Although i think he is just as effective in both roles.

Nathan Ablett and Mooney should be played across half forward with Hawkins or Ottens in the goal square alongside a crumber such as G.Ablett, Chapman, S.Johnson, Stokes or Varcoe.

After being named BOG in the VFL finals series he said himself that he prefers CHF as he has more room to be creative.

Looked very impressive leading out of the square on Sunday, despite that though CHF would be his best position I think, more room to move and create opportunities, excellent ground skills for a bloke his size.

To me I'd go with the following options:

1. N.Ablett and Mooney as leading CHFs, Hawkins at FF, Ottens in the ruck.
2. If Hawkins loses form, then one of Ablett/Mooney at CHF, the other FF. Again Ottens in the ruck.

The common thread here is Ottens in the ruck at all times. Hawkins showed enough on Saturday to be given first crack in the goalsquare. And unlike the other two, he looks a natural full forward. Let the other two run around (they're more mobile anyway) and leave the kid in the square.

If, and thats a big if, Nathan, Hawk and Otto can hold down the key forward posts, then i'd like to see Mooney used as a utility/floater through the midfield in spells, giving some real hardness around the ball.

Don't know about that. We've got Mooney playing the best football of his career exclusively as a key forward - one of our real problem areas. Why would you consider moving him?

Leave Ottens out of the square and in the ruck. Agree about Nathan and Mooney. Nathan has a lot of creativity and creates goals as well as kicks them, we wouldn't get to see that aspect of his game at FF.

For now you'd leave NA playing HFF,with Mooney at CHF and Hawkins at FF.In a couple of years you might have him play CHF.

Agree Jubjub, NA needs to play at HFF with Mooney taking the key post. Just the way it should be at the moment. This would also stretch the opposition by having to put a bigger defender on a flank.

Also Otto needs to stay in the ruck at the moment, which leaves Hawkins in the FF spot. When Hawkins starts to lose form, which he will, then put NA to CHF. Swap Cam and him throughout the game if need be.

Wish it was that simple during a game though.

13 games Nathan has played, I worry he could get a little lost at CHF. It seems Thompson is still confident Ottens can play as a full forward (on the return of KING) That would force Nablett to play across half forward. with Hawk and Otto inside 50 and Mooney at CHF.

No need for set positisons. I dont see Mooney or Nathan Ablett being able to play a whole match as CHF and do it effectively. Swap them over and overlap and we confuse our opponents. They are both quality playing foward and will kick goals. Thats what we did against Carlton and Bulldogs - less effectively - and it seems to be working much better than our fowardline of previous seasons.

I think he'd be alright on a full forward flank. Or maybe RHF.
Either way Nablett needs to improve before he can think about honing in on the Moonster's spot.

That's exactly what i think. Nathan can play out of the goalsquare or at CHF so can Mooney. they should be working together to create a mismatch. They are good mates so should have the Scarlett Harley teamwork.
