Small tip, ignore it if you want: If your going to Positano from Naples and your not hiring a car, don't take the bus, go to the Naples port and grab a faery, best way to enter Positano and Sorrento is by sea... Takes two hours, very relaxing and its has amazing views of Vesuvius and the coast.

Time to open a "travel tips" thread. Would prove very handy :)

I love the magnetic pull of the Freeman threads, both her and on the Pies board, towards complete randomness. It's almost mystical.

Wasn't that something to do with the AFL team still playing?
If our AFL team has finished but our vfl is still going can he still play?
Isn't it more about how many AFL games you've played in the year rather than how few VFL games you've played?

Closet Demons supporter?
Pfft.
Speaking of Freeman, I am 690 pages into War and Peace. A novel translated from Russian into English except for all the French Russian society spoke at the time, which is translated as footnotes.

Just to continue theme of running off topic, War and Peace at least has a narrative, I read James Joyce's Ulysses 1 and a half times so people would think I'm smart and I'm pretty sure it's just some smart arse Irish pisshead laughing at pseudo intellectual w***ers.i have read another of his books that seemed quite readable but **** me Ulysses is a haul to get through.

It's linked to number of VFL games played. Lots of AFL listed players play in VFL finals even though AFL team's finished.

In Freeman's case, assuming he's fit, they can ask for an exemption, as he just wasn't fit enough to play sufficient VFL games, let alone AFL. VFL can use their discretion to make the allowance, eg earlier mentioned example of Cyril.

Having said that, I am 50-50 whether the club will ask for exemption. They are more likely in my view, to just cotton wool him up and set up for next year.

Joyce and Patrick White do my head in. Apparently both also had waifer thin hammies and took up writing instead of football.

Aha......finally, a tenuous link to Freeman.
This thread has gone walkabout ;)

Pfft. Joyce sucks - like Prost - its complete exorbitant bull, the worst of modernest self-absorption. Follow up War and Peace (only a suggestion) with Dostoyevsky's Brothers Kasamazov. He may be a Conservative Moralist, but Dostoyevsky asks some of lives most difficult questions.

And heres the connection to this thread (tenuous as it may be), the youngest brothers nobility, persistence and faith plays out in the end, as I think the Saints and Freeman's will...

I told you it was tenuous...

Having a go at Moby Dick after War and Peace.
I see Freeman as Ahab and the great white whale as his hammy injury that he is obsessed with destroying.

Well what a well read bunch we are here on Saints Big Footy.

Been there done that with all the above mentioned books in an (failed) effort to present myself as well read and educated.

Just to add my comment - I've recently finished a modern "epic' Roberto Bolano's 2666. Thankfully in the translation from Spanish it shrank from 1100 pages to a mere 900.

However unlike Ulysses and Moby Dick every one of the lines and pages are utterly readable and very unlike War and Peace - things happen - boy to do things happen. Don't ask me what its about - still not sure but its a bloody great read.

Connection to Freeman - obvious its called 2666 plus Part 4 is called "The part about the Crimes" which despite the horrendous crimes Bolano describes - the subtext is clearly referencing about the crimes of punishment that have been committed on Saints supporters since 2666 with Freemans hammies being just the latest.

Personally, I'd take Crime and Punishment, and probably Resurrection over The Brothers Karamazov. I think they are slightly more approachable than TBK. And you're right about Dostoyesky asking those big questions: one of the more fascinating ones from C&P is that idea of, is the crime itself the punishment? One of the best examples around that question from the book would be alcoholism.

And I don't make any pretentions of keeping this thread on track. That ship has well and truly sailed.

Bugger me, seriously, Moby freaking Dick?!? Ugh, irritating as all hell. It relies far too much on sub-plots and pedantic descriptions, at the expense of the narrative that everybody wants: Ahab v White Whale.

I'll put my hat in the ring for Robinson Crusoe - now THERE is a flipping awesome classic novel!
