As people have been trying to point out. He can be a rookie on exactly the same contract.

A possible scenario would be:
We de-list him and tell him he's safe and that his contract is still valid.
We draft him as a Rookie and goes onto the Rookie list at the same salary he is currently on.
( do you really think another team would draft him from under us?)

Advantage. We get an extra list space to draft a de-listed free agent.
Disadvantage , we don't have any Rookie spots left.

On the other hand we could ask any DFA's we are interested in to nominate for the Draft and pick them up as a Rookie if they are available . ( Like Mav for example ).

You could do all that but what sort of a message does that send to not just Freezer but the whole club?
The simple fact is that Freeman held an element of risk when we traded for him, we knew that and went in with our eyes wide open.
While at times this year things got frustrating for everybody, the fact still remains that Freezer has only had one significant tear to his hamstrings in the 13 months since he arrived.
We were never going to measure the success of the trade on senior games played in his first year, or even disposals in the VFL.
The medicos and fitness staff think they really started to make inroads in the second half of the year in strengthening his core and lower body which is the first step in bullet proofing his hamstrings.
He played regular footy towards the end of the year which was extremely pleasing, and while his form was disappointing it wasn't really the focus.
The German trip may or may not give us some further insights into Nathan, but the trip will benefit the whole club, and any other player that may have issues in the future.
The next challenge for Freezer is probably the mental side of subconsciously trusting his body in training and matches now. Players with recurring soft tissue injuries tend to not let themselves "fully go" for a time until they really trust themselves, it's not him battling mental demons as some have suggested in here, it's just human nature unfortunately.
The fact remains that if the young fella gets his body right and then finds the form we think he's capable of then he's a very important member of our best 22, he gives us something we desperately need in another mid with some dash and hardness.

ripping post

Not over yet.
I got a feeling he'll come good.
Hes a jet. We keep forgetting we have him and the fact we got two free 2nd rounders from the hawks means FREEMAN and STEELE are just that. FREE!! Wahoo.

Freeman (when up and about) is elite so have faith and be positive. Anyway we have to try these things.

Ok, I will rePhrase...

biggest waste of a draft pick since Lovett

Luke Ball was Lyon's gift to Malthouse!

Wrong, he's only the biggest waste of a draft pick since we picked Spencer White at 25, in 2012.
He has potential to be the biggest waste since Longer in 2013 if we believe the commentators
Hugh Goddard 2014 is no sure thing.
We are talking pick 31 this year ffs , get over it, he's not even a write off yet.

He has never been up and about so I dont think we can class him as elite just yet

Just drop a few of these into any conversation with either and you'll be fine:
  • Balme
  • Gubby
  • Brownlow
  • Jobe
  • Hird
  • Dank
etc.
Joke's on them.

Anyhoo, Bombers haven't collected endless flags on the back of the Lovett deal while Collingwood yet to show they've won from the Freeman trade.

Don't sweat it.

Rather be us than either of them [emoji41]

When you consider the Hawks gave us picks 23 and 36 for basically nothing, we effectively got Freeman for very little.

That trade makes a lot of our other trades look really good! It's great.

Tom Lee would have to be our biggest wasted draft pick wouldn't he? We hadn't had a high draft pick in ages and we blow it on Lee. If only.
