I'm not buying we butchered Mathews (Nathan Freeman's) glutestrings. Seriously, if he thought were negligent in our rehab program or had clauses some long lasting damage you'd think he'd be suing us right now. He obviously wanted his Jerry Maguire moment and st kinda was only too happy to oblige.

Now hopefully we have our own "draft day" moments and Matthew (Nathan) will be remembered as that kid that missed out on a flag becuase he had an inflated self worth.

Our midfeild will have depth but it won't have stars like brisbanes 01 02 03 04 GFs
Voss Lappin Black Akermanis

We have one star in Pendlebury. Swan is nearly done and will be gone by the end of 2016. Treloar might make 2. That's it. It's not the midfeild some and making it out to be.

We needed guys like Freeman to become the next Dangerfeild to win flags.

Fair call, I'm very confident Adams will become an A grader though, some of his games this year for a 21 year old were spectacular.

I'm also very bullish on Crisp, he has great size and speed, he's pretty much the prototype midfielder. From the limited games he has played he is showing great signs.

If there's substance to it, I hope this is being addressed and we get better. If it is true, it's also done now so learning from it is all we can do.

But dubious about taking anything an anonymous poster on the internet says as truthful. More likely this person has either made it up or is recounting info that is fourth-fifth hand and has grown in the telling.
Maybe. Well our fitness staff has undergone a performance review. But meanwhile he left us for greener pastures .In time we will hear what his motivation was.If he is succesful, no doubt a nice news article about him and if not, a sports obituary who someone that left us in controversial circumstances.

Have read through many pages of this thread, and i really am appalled at some of the comments toward Freeman. I can't believe there are people wishing this kid never gets to full health, wishing he does more damage to his hammies, hoping his career finishes in a few years.
Come on people!. This kid is 20 years old. He has been precluded from playing the game that he loves for 2 years. He must be super frustrated with that. And he needs to maximise his earnings from a (relatively) short football career that all players have. You can't begrudge a player for doing that.

Many seem to bag him for leaving, yet laud other players for coming to Collingwood for identical reasons.
Wanting to play for the club you supported as a kid? Karnezis says hello.
Move to another club for money? Greenwood says Hi. And welcome Treloar.
Leave a club because he feels he has fallen out with certain aspects of the club? I read people here wanting to welcome Yarran & Harley.
Feeling he owes something back to the club after the investment the club put in him? A. Rocca did that to the Swans a few years back. And Aish, we would love you here!!

I am a Collingwood supporter, and i know about calling the situation differently depending on which shoe the foot is on. But hoping harm to an AFL player sounds like sour grapes, and is childish. Surely if it was you, or he was your son, and people were saying that, you would be pissed.

I would hope no player in the AFL gets injured, and all great talented players play every week (preferably for the Pies, but that's dreaming).
Hell, we have had more than our share of injuries recently. And perhaps we should be asking why. Why is it when other teams' players pull a hamstring, or do a calf, they are back playing in 3 weeks. Yet, our soft tissue injuries seem to take months/seasons to heal.

I would hope that Freeman fully recovers, and plays good footy (except has stinkers of games when he plays the Pies). I am just glad that he is going to a team that won't challenge us for a GF in the next few years :p.

Yes, it does hurt but we should move on. Get the best deal we can, and put this down to a failed top 10 pick. After all, we are not the first in this and won't be the last. We should be thankfull that our success rate has been high in the draft recently.

In the past I would have been fuming about this type of news but I think I've become accustomed to the fact that player movements these days is far more common than it has ever been and theoretically anyone could leave the club at any given time.

In regards to Freeman it's such a shame it hasn't worked out because the kid has huge potential to be a gun and with the pace he provides he's exactly what we need right now in terms of up and coming midfielders who can provide us with pace which is lacking in the side at the moment.

The issue with his hamstrings has obviously been an ongoing issue. It's evident that Nathan lacks the confidence and faith to believe that his body will stand up to the rigours of AFL football and I would not be shocked if he has some grievances towards the Collingwood fitness department for the way they've managed this recurring injury problem.

I'm not going to bother abusing him until the deal is done for certain but even then it's not worth my energy to verbally abuse him because the trade deal could fall through or maybe he'll have a change of heart and stay with the club by some miracle. Stranger things have happened but the current events we're seeing is very disappointing but it's something I think AFL supporters need to become accustomed to. I don't like the path we're heading with loyalty diminishing at a rapid rate but this is what the game has become sadly especially with the introduction of free agency and players holding clubs to ransom if they do not go to the club of their choice.

Overall, if Nathan is not committed to being a part of the success of the football club in the future then it's best to part ways and try and get the best possible trade deal we can similar to the way we conceded we lost Beams last year but didn't budge until we got a sufficient deal to our liking.

I do agree with some of what you've said in this post, but regarding the bits that I've quoted here, the idea that many people seem to have that player loyalty is not what it used to be, it's all about the money these days etc. is honestly very far fetched. Players were swapping clubs just for an extra shilling or two many many years ago, this sort of thing is not at all new.

Des Fothergill and Ron Todd are among the finest players Collingwood (and the game) has ever seen. The two of them walked out on us in the space of a year (about 75 years ago), not to go to another VFL side, but to move to the VFA. You're probably well aware of their stories, if not, for something comparable imagine Pendlebury and Cloke walking out on the club when about 20 or so, this was almost certainly far worse! Nathan Freeman may well turn into a really good player, and a big loss for Collingwood, but in the overall scheme of things his loss is not that great. If we handle this deal as well as we e.g. handled the Beams deal last year, I think we'll come out of it very well, and I have faith in our people to do that.

We now have 18 clubs (spread across the land), a few years back there were just 12, and they were all in Victoria. Most of the players were Victorian, so the go-home factor didn't come up too often. Also, players had not just the entire off-season, but a fair chunk of the next season to change clubs, now nearly all of the year's player movement between clubs is sorted out within a week or so. Makes it easy for people to think things have gone mad as far as player movement is concerned, but it really is over and done with very quickly.

Anyone read that section on Freeman on EB&W from that 'Family Friend'? I have combined a few posts

So in the end a typical rage quit .
Salem? He tore his hamstring as well but im guessing that was the fitness department at Melbs fault too

Not sure if it's been mentioned on here but on AFL 360 Robbo was saying we're after a 1st rounder for Freeman.

I think your examples are completely wrong. You can't compare with a Greenwood, Treloar, Yarran, Karnezis etc. These players PLAYED footy and have great service to their clubs or were playing interstate and wanted to come home. Karnezis wanted to come back to Melbourne. He was fortunate that Pies showed interest. what is frustrating here is that Freeman has provided zilch to the Collingwood football club and wants to move.

I agree we are getting hung up over a kid who may not even make it in the AFL. I for one was underwhelmed with his performances in the VFL and put it down to him as either being a high draft pick that will take longer to pick up the game or someone we took a punt on because of his size and speed but may not actually work out. My view is not that I'm angry that we are losing someone who may be great (as I don't think he will be), but because he seems to be pointing fingers at others and has shown nothing to at least give it a shot. Signed for another year or two and we would all be ok to see whether he can cut it.

If you are unhappy with the medical staff, surely you can have a conversation with the club and request another opinion. He could have voiced his concerns and had the pies agree to let him seek alternative opinions on his hammy as part of the signing on.

I'm sure the club would be accommodating if they thought he was worth persevering with. It's not as if we kept bringing him onto the park when he wasn't ready. He has surgery and there were complications - nothing new here. There is always a risk with surgery.

Maybe he wasn't fitting in with the team? Maybe he was used to being THE guy at school and with his junior clubs and couldn't handle being unproven. Maybe he sees Treloar coming in and feels it is going to be too much of a fight to make the team?

A lot a questions for someone who we just assume is going to be good because he was chosen at 10. Take a look at all the top 10 picks over the past 10 years. Every club supporter would have been excited with their clubs choice expecting who they picked to be a gun. In reality only a fraction go on to becoming good footballers. To think we are losing a player who is going to be a gun and we desperately need him to win a premiership is ludicrous. St Kilda is now taking on the risk on a guaranteed contract. As I said previously they do not have a great record of managing injuries. No-one knows if the kid can actually play AFL and with potential hammy problems, there lies the risk

I call bulldust on 'Family Friend'. That whole dialogue sounds exactly like mick39 has been blurting out about Freeman here last night. Sounds very fishy to me. Why would a 'Family Friend', who is not a Collingwood supporter, feel the need to seek out that particular board to explain things. Reeks of troll imo.

That's just funny. We will be lucky to get a second Rs pick IMO

If they're willing to pay him $300k they must rate him enough for a decent trade...dont think we're after the saints first rounder, just A first rounder.

Sadly, our unopened Christmas gift from 2 years ago, will get handed down to that to that pain in the arse relative, that your forced to see, at Christmas gatherings, and you know you've got to give them something, even though you know all your getting is a pair of socks.

Shame the AFL draft doesn't give store credit for unopened gifts;)

On Freeman - how about a results based trade - round three this year (based on injury/no form) to be swapped for next years round 1, 2 or 4 depending on whether he gets on the park!!!!

PicaBoo,

I don't post on EB&W but the one question I would have of this 'Family Friend' is why did he choose StKilda over North?

North's High Performance Manager Director Sports Science & Training Services, Steve Saunders is very highly regarded.

One would have thought that North come out in front of StKilda on an injury management and prevention point of view?

Agree with the above. Didn't the Saints have a bad run at the start of this year with soft tissue injuries, in particular, hamstrings?
