That's an interesting thought, lots of discussion on our board about whether we should trade one of Hickey and Longer. I think they're probably both worth more to us than you'd want to pay though, rucks with 40+ games under the belt are definitely more than just Freeman alone.

Any saints supporter who wants to trade longer is off his rocker. Hickey, however has underwhelmed. Nonetheless, I think a few years down the track, he'll come good.

But Melbourne's argument in 2009 was that they couldn't consider taking Ball because they hadn't done a medical, even though I would have thought they could just rely on Collingwood having done the work. So maybe there's more to it than that from a risk perspective.

Difference was Ball was a liked VETERAN of the AFL community. Your coach had no faith in him (47% gametime in the 2009 GF). He would be no use to half the sides that weren't in a premiership window So the teams with early picks are unlikely to want him.

Freeman is no one, nothing but potential.
Luke Ball, or leaks, hinted he would retire if picked by someone else.
Freeman is under 20.

I said every club would always do what's in their own best interests, I then continued this point by saying no club is going to go a on a childish vendetta against another club because of something from 7 years ago, because it would hurt them as well.

Nah, you can't. The AFL won't allow that because then they're leaving themselves open to a "restraint of trade" suit which could bring down the whole draft/trade system.

If, freeman, wants to just get up and walk it should be our clubs benefit as much as possible.

And seeing as our history trading with you guys isn't great id hope we play absolute hardball with you guys. Agreed. If there was another young ruck in the comp I'd love to have if we didn't have Grundy, it'd be Longer. Rate him higher than Witts, the kid will be a beast.

We have too much salary cap room. We had to take guys off the veteran's list to reach the minimum this year. We could offer him $500k and it would fit, so it's a zero cost gamble for us.

you arent considering the issue you are creating with your younger players who will be coming off second year contracts. especially the ones who have played a bit of senior footy and shown something. they will be expecting 400 - 500k based in Freemans deal.

The can was opened when the Dogs paid Boyd $1m a season for the next 6 or 7.
They could never land a player of superstar status so they had to pay and pray that he becomes one but pay him like one in the process.
Anyone who has watched him in the VFL will tell you he is rather average.

I think my expectations of winning a flag in the few years or last few especially 2012 were unrealistic. We aren't a Hawthorn type football club YET and that's where my expectations have been set. Too high.

Supporting a club has nothing to do with expectations. We ARE Collingwood supporters. It is both a pleasure and a curse.
