Performed above himself in the Test arena I reckon, didn't disgrace himself in the slightest. A competitor through and through, I had a lot of time for him. Can be proud of his career!

Frankly terrific stats for a test off-spinners in this country.

60 wickets at 35, 3.1 era and 67 sr

Wonder what would have happened if he hadn't had those shoulder injuries

Was un-fairly dropped and effectively discarded because he wasn't Warne esque. For a limited player, he gave a good account of himself.

A competent offspinner, capable fielder and useful lower-order batsman who was very unlucky not to play more Tests. He was good at holding up an end with his nagging accuracy.

Hauritz played 18 Tests, and bowled 720 overs in his Test career, for 66 wickets. By comparison, in his first 720 overs in Test cricket, Shane Warne took "just" 59 wickets (can't get exact average and economy figures for comparison, as over-by-over commentary isn't available), and it also took him 18 Tests to reach that same 66 wicket mark.

Also, after 720 Test overs:

Hauritz - 34.98 average, 66.6 strike rate, 3.14 economy rate, 66 wickets, two 5fers
Lyon - 33.05 average, 64.6 strike rate, 2.98 economy rate, 65 wickets, two 5fers

The guy was pretty decently effective for someone so limited. No star, but certainly serviceable and unfairly maligned, and with a more supportive captain than Ponting who knew how to set some attacking fields for spinners, could have grown further and gotten better with age. Was just a week away from his 29th birthday when he played his last Test.

Just as Lyon should never have been dropped for Agar, Hauritz should never have been dropped for Xavier Doherty and Michael Beer. Hauritz then giving away his old Test sweaters in the street shortly after this was very much a "I'm giving it the same respect it gave me" moment, even if he denied it at the time.

Congrats on the career Hauri

To me he always seemed slightly unsure of his place and/or role in teams he played in, which may have been a result of, or cause of the several moves he made at a domestic level.

Either way, had good results domestically and internationally. Had a career anyone on here would be more than proud of.

Treated very unfairly by selectors and played under a captain who didn't really know how to use him well. Gave a good account of himself, got back into the Australian team...and then dislocated his shoulder, ending his international career once and for all.

Did well to put on a brave face afterwards, to be honest. Deserved more.

Hauritz and Lyon both debuted at 23, Warne at 22. Hauritz however played 16 of his 17 tests from 27 to 29 so had a greater opportunity to fine tune his game at FC level. He debuted in a similar position to where Steve O'Keefe has been over the last couple of years. The numbers aren't drastically different but I think Nathan Lyon is a much better bowler now than he was after 17 tests. I don't think Hauritz at 30+ would've been much better than he was when he was in the side - even if he was performing better than those who ended up replacing him.

I was never a huge fan of Hauritz but he did OK for Australia. Came in a terrible time for spinners (post-Warne) and a terrible time in general with the side being average and unstable. Decent ODI bowler too, but again came in after Hogg who everyone loved. Definitely deserves a bit more credit than he's got over the years.

Pretty prdrstrian offie.. Wasn't really test level but was the best of the crumbs we had available that's for sure.

Nah selling his ability short I think. He did reasonably well considering the insecurity that he was working with. Only an outsiders account, but didn't seem that he was handled well at all by Ponting or the selectors of the time. Clearly a pretty insecure and nervous sort of guy, would have benefited from some confidence shown in him rather than ultra-defensive fields and knee jerk reactions.

Clarke was a very polarising leader, but one of his major successes has been his management of Lyon who is a similar sort of character to Hauritz. Lehmann probably should take a fair bit of the credit as well.

Always thought he was unfairly treated and that there might have been something going on behind the scenes. In the post-Warne era, he was the only spinner that kept it tight, but still managed to take wickets. He was a hardly a star, but he played a role.

IIRC, when he was finally dropped for good, it was for Xavier Doherty. The rumours were that Ponting himself had pushed for Doherty. Now Punter is no idiot. He would have seen plenty of both Hauritz and Doherty in the nets... did he honestly push for Doherty because he thought he'd be better? Or what is it an issue of "team fit"?

does anyone know where his nickname "no spin" originated from?
He had great variety. The Arm ball, the straightish one, the one that didn't turn, the one that looked like it was going to turn and then went straight on

that whole 2010-11 summer for Hauritz would have to be one of the most depressing stories. Ridiculously dropped for Doherty, who predictably fails, and Hauritz goes back to the shield, and takes a 5 wicket haul and scores a ton in his two games, and when Doherty gets dropped after the Adelaide test, he's over-looked for Michael ****ing Beer, even for the last test where they could have quietly dropped the Beer experiment and justly re-called Hauritz. And then they finally pick Haurtiz for the WC, and in his first OD back, bowls tidily during the middle overs...and does his shoulder in the field and never plays for Australia again while Jason ****ing Krejza fails at the WC. Just the worst run.

Oh and I left out the 17 man squad fiasco and how in the last shield game before the first test, where technically he was in an one on one battle with Doherty (although I'm sure the decision was all but made by then), it pissed down in Sydney the week before and it was a green top, and Katich bowled him for one over out of 95 odd.

literally the main difference between lyon and hauritz is that when lyon got dropped for doherty, they picked lyon soon after, and not michael beer.

Yes, fond memories of his bowling in Adelaide. He didn't have the flight and drift of Erin Osbourne, the tight line and dip of Lisa Sthalekar or the turn and bounce of Kevin Pietersen, but he was a good cricketer who could have played more.

.

Can people do me a favour and stop mentioning Jason Krejza at the World Cup? Still get the heebie jeebies when I think of his half-trackers.
