Knee injuries crippled this mans career but I'm taking Mark Price. I have the defence and I need a shooting guard off my bench

Are people still doing the 10 categories or am I the only sucker taking players from the 1930's to make that work?

Still going with the 10 categories. Roster so far:

Walt Frazier - 5x all-star
Jerry West - 1 club
Dr J - 3 clubs
Garnett - League Leader
Abdul Jabber - UCLA

Pierce - 3pt champ
Antetokounmpo - non-MVP
Gervin - # >40

Still need: #<10 and HOFer. But can switch other players around to cover those if needed. I probably need another PG, but not sure that I really like any that are left. Could also do with more shooting given. Spewing that Mutombo has gone. Would have liked him to anchor my second unit in the middle.

Yeah. Only reason I took Vince Carter.

I feel guilty for jumping nufan recognising that a lot can be happening around this time of year... but also don't want to hold everyone else up.

I wasn't aware of how much I romanticise the players of past generations until I did this draft, or perhaps you guys just all underestimate them and keep leaving them. There are still a lot of guys from before the 1980s that I still rate quite highly. Of course, my only analysis of them is what I've read and from a few highlight clips. But guys like Mikan, Rick Barry, Earl Monroe, Bob McAdoo, Willis Reed and Pete Maravich are legends of their time and are all still available.

But I need a point guard to lead my 2nd unit. And with how the game has changed, there seem to be more dominant point guards right now than at any previous time in the sports history. So there are 3 current players that I really had to try to split for this selection.

With my next pick, Wadsworth selects Kyrie Irving (played in a number >10 in Cleveland). My view on him has completely changed this year in Boston. Previously, I thought he was a selfish ball dominant point guard who didn't really help his team win and was just lucky that Lebron joined him in Cleveland. But his ability to lead a Boston team that is arguably the best defensive team in the league this season (rank 1 in Defensive Rating and #2 in opponent eFG%). He's currently 4th in the league in Win Shares and 6th in VORP. My opinion of him has completely transformed this season.

My roster is now:

PG: Walt Frazier
SG: Jerry West
SF: Julius Erving
PF: Kevin Garnett
C: Kareem Abdul Jabbar

Bench:

Kyrie Irving
George Gervin
Paul Pierce
Giannis Antetokounmpo

One spot left for a backup C. Last remaining criteria is a HOFer, but could swap around other positions if needed.

I still can't believe I got Magic and Shaq with picks 8 and 9.
Would have selected Magic, but I haven’t got Bird in one of these drafts in ages and considering I rate him just behind Magic, I decided to shake things up.

IMO Magic is without doubt top 5 of all time, so you did well there. Shaq anywhere between 6 and 10 is about right IMO

I found it interesting Russell slid to me, reckon he’d still be very good in today’s NBA. He and Wilt are the only ones I can see really keeping their superstar status today (of course only off bios). Even the way Pettit is described, I can’t see him impacting as much

I prefer to draft players I've actually seen play. Nothing against the old fellas. Just don't like drafting on stats alone.

Very pleased with my overall team so far. The only one I felt I might have gone early on is Mullin, but I needed a combined shooter/scorer off the bench (really haven’t got another one on this team, apart from Bird) and felt that he could be gone next time around. Still some very good options for my next pick remaining on the board, though

Yeah, I got Magic @ 3 or 4 all time so really happy with that.

Like you I have Shaq in the 6 to 10 bracket. He's definitely better than Kobe, who was selected before him. I also have him better than Duncan as well (though I'm sure that was a home town pick :p ).

Steph Curry going top 20 was a bit of a surprise, but I guess offensively he's really well suited for All Star squads.

I got into basketball in the early 90s when VHS tapes about the history of the NBA were coming out and there were a lot of highlights in those. Back then, those guys really seemed like superstars, and that's probably stuck with me a lot. With how much more professional sports have become and the improvements in training, I don't think you can judge different generations 'like for like'. Being elite relative to peers is the best indication of talent to me. We've seen how much new skills can be added to a players game if the environment warrants it. Look at Brook Lopez and Marc Gasol shooting 3s these days. Even compared to 12 months ago, it's a phenomenal change. Back in the early 70s there wasn't even a 3 point line. So I expect a lot of those older guys would be able to adapt to today's style of play more than we give them credit for that.

I would have selected Steph at 22 had he been available. If he gets another couple of championships under his belt, he deserves about a top 15-20 ranking without doubt, IMO. Funny, cause last time we did one of these I argued Isiah was better and Steph wouldn’t pass him soon - I was wrong :p

The biggest reach for me in the top 25 or so picks is probably Kidd? Although I reckon if prime Kidd played today he’d stack up pretty well against the elite point guards of 2018
