Hey Ross,

Cheers for all your info on the game so far, its sounds great! :)

Just a quick question on positions. One thing that used to annoy the hell out of me in previous games, was when players wouldn't run outside a certain distance of the position they were selected to play.

ie) Right Forward Pocket, staying in that general area... Wingman staying on the wing, not running into centre bounce etc.

Just wondering whether things will be different for your game??

ie) Players running up the ground if they are a foward, Wingman running into centre bounces etc.

Cheers

Completely agree. In the past it's been just as good (if not better) to play on and have a running shot, OR the set shots were too easy and you just had to press a button to get it in.

I'd like something to do with timing and accuracy....like, 3rd person view, hold back on the right stick to start your run up, and at the right time (say 10 steps into the run up) you flick the stick forward to kick the ball.

That way, your timing is taken by the right time in the run-up you flick the stick forward (too early means less power, too late means kicking it into the man on the mark), and accuracy is taken as from how close to perfect your timing was, and the angle that you flicked the stick up.

Then you'd tie in things like game difficulty and your goal kicker's set shot accuracy, and balance things around that....

Just thinking.....
It's definitely one way to potentially go. Most sports games are using the analog stick control for more finesse and a more realistic control use as well. NBA, Tiger Woods, NFL and NHL all have implemented the analog stick control in some way or another.

I can also see how it would be something that differs up from regular play, rather than just being a regular play set shot (which is sort of what Fitzroy_Lions suggested).

The only thing I would see as being an issue potentially is that there could be a situation where you might not always be kicking a goal (due to maybe not putting enough power on the shot) but it would generally be fairly accurate. You'd really have to put a fair amount of error to be accounted for, for tiny movements of the stick to one side and a little bit less power than needed would drop way short or skew the kick.

Cringe. I just played AFL06, on hard, on 10 minutes, and 4 real life minutes in I'm down 55-0 with 0 disposals, despite getting the timing bar on the ruck perfect every time.

I don't suck, I'm 4-0 this season!

Yeah I had the same thing happen afl 06 and especially afl 05 can get fairly challenging if you've been playing 07 for a while pretty dissapointing how they went so far backwards between premiership edition and 2005

Since reading about all this info, I have started to re-play AFL 07 and it really isnt that bad, it's okay for it's time considering again that no big name company were ever gonna make it. Edit a player is a great feature in it also and works well with the draftees.

I was considering playing it also but can't be bothered setting ps2 up, I'll just wait till it comes out on ps3 haha

Afl 07 is obviously the best of them so far having a player editor is great being able to put in ballantyne and others but get extremely annoyed in career when after 2016 or something three quarters of the games are played in the rain I just hate the wet weather play on afl 07.

I'm sure you can change the weather in options. Unlike some I could never play on hard but normal would only ever see me lose when it was raining.

minus 1 for the flick stick goal kicking. I stopped playing golf games once i stumbled upon that in a Tiger Woods demo. :p Do not like.

Well I would love the flick kick for goal but how would it work with snaps and torpedos, I like the idea for it, but I just don't think it will work, it could in later versions when bigant have had 2 to 3 extra years trying to get the flick kick right, then they can bring it out where it's easy enough to know what kick you are trying to do.

AFL Premiership 2006 was the best one. Best camera view, best gameplay, everything about it was AWESOME! Still play it to this day, and I don't mean to brag but... I can beat anyone. I put it on hard and I can still belt the living suitcase out of any team I play. Hopefully hard mode this time around is a little different.

That is an incredible achievement.

Oops, sorry, I thought you said you managed to lose a game on hard.

Jokes aside I think 2007 on hard in the rain playing with a team of rookies is the only time where you can really get your pants spanked no matter what you do. Sadly though I think this says more about the gameplay dynamics - and the fact that you can't kick to a lead, handball to a player or mark a ball with any real science - than your skill level. I mean can anyone hear honestly tell me you know how to mark consistently in 2007?

Nope

The marking on 07 baffled me. I tried so many different ways of pressing the button with different timing but nothing worked consistently. The only way to take a conteseted mark was to bump the other guy onto the ground first!

I have been playing 07' of late with an updated Pies team and the marking is just outright stupid.

The opposition forward out marks you all the time even if you have 2 on him and he is at the back of the pack and you press the marking or punching button. Another dumb thing was handballing, the amount of times you direct it to a teammate and it doesn't go to him...

Flick stick would be interesting but hard to implement. In Tiger Woods you're always just pointing in one direction and the ball moves in the direction of the flick. What about in the AFL when you're taking snaps and such? I can see how it'd work for set shots but we don't want a completely new mechanic when doing shots on goal from free play.

Good call melbournemartin. Was thinking the same myself.
You could use the flick for set shots but it would be dodgy if you had to press buttons for on the run and therefore kick them with ease.
It'd then result in you playing on all the time to kick on the run.

I'm sure the Big Ant guys are all over this anyway.

We'll all just have to be patient.

I think having a different mechanic for set shots would be way better.

Kicking the ball 'on the run' and from a set shot are completely different techniques in real life, so why not in the game?

I would prefer something that was hard to master, for realism.

Maybe a simpler mechanic on Easy mode then on Hard a much more involved control system.

It will be interesting to see how they've done it, Its a first generation game though I suppose, and our feedback on forums might contribute to improving it for the next installment.

Its still fun to critique something we know nothing about just yet.

Yeah, what I hate about the old AFL games was how easy it is to kick goals.

For set shots at goal it should be same as this online game "Kanga Kick";

http://www.myfootballgames.co.uk/game/151/Kanga-Kick.html

Wind affects the kick, you can choose a torp which makes the meter run faster therefor harder to kick straight. In this game you can even choose the "Banana Kick"! For players that are inaccurate kicks it would go even faster, but for the accurate kickers it would go slower.

For kicks at goal on the run it probably needs to be based on the players kicking abilities as it would be hard to implement a kicking bar system.

That game is pretty sweet, i wouldn't complain if set shots were like that in this game. Should provide a realistic conversion ratio as if you're not concentrating it's pretty easy to spray, or even really shank a kick.

I'd be fine if kicking on the run was just one button, like fifa. Banana kicks or torps could be shoulder button modifiers.

2007 is piss easy sunny and raining when on hard. Never lost a game.
