Age journalist Michael Gleeson this week releases his new book, Cakewalk, celebrating the 20-year anniversary of the 1990 Collingwood premiership. In a series of excerpts, Gleeson recounts the memorable path to one of the most revered flag successes in club history.

Looks like it will be a good read.

I just saw that on the site, and thought that little part of the book would get me to buy it alone.

I remember hearing about this story from Craig Kelly at a local sportsman night a few years ago, and he told the story like the players were dying, and just made it to the end, which was probably a bit over the top, but still, it was dire for some players apparently.

Will be a good read, and just in time for the 20 year anniversary.

****, 20 years, it's too long between drinks.

What ever happened to Joffa's movie....
That'll really get your goat Mikel3030.:D

Books are good for edjamicating the young folk about our clubs history if nothing else.

another effing book- just win a bloody premiership. So sick of this crap.

I don't think a journalist writing a book is either going to detract or enhance our chances of a premiership.

I've never read any Collingwood books, I've never really been big on sport bios, dad has a fair few Collingwood ones are they worth the read? Do they give a good perspective on the personalities of those involved? I don't think I could sit down and read a Collingwood circle jerk though.

Some wonderful extracts in this article in The Age today

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/history-in-the-making-20100608-xtnn.html

The room was becoming boisterous. Damian Monkhorst stalked the room, Gavin Crosisca called out. James Manson walked about, mad eyes betraying the fact he was more subdued than normal. Ordinarily, Manson would have head-butted a locker or two by now, a pre-game routine to arouse him, but not this day. In other games he would slap and punch his teammates to spark him up and get them worked up, too. Not all took it well: he hit Michael Christian a little too hard one day, such that Christian responded by punching Manson in the ear. The moment almost escalated, and Monkhorst had since been installed as "Charlie", Manson's minder, to keep him on knife edge and catch him when he began tipping over. On grand final day he could ignore Manson, for no one needed extra motivation

Love it!

and this anecdote about Millane and Starcevich

Craig Starcevich sat in a corner, quiet, withdrawn and feeling guilty, for his inclusion came at McKeown's cost. He wanted to be respectful of his teammate by not drawing attention to himself. Starcevich also felt imbued with a greater-than-normal sense of responsibility to perform due to the uncomfortable manner of his selection. It was not his doing … but he could not shake his guilt, so he sat quietly on the fringe, leaving it to others to lift the energy in the room. Darren Millane spied him from across the room and walked over. He grabbed Starcevich by the collar and shook him.

"Are you with us? Are you with us?" he yelled in his face, making eye contact at close range. He quietened his voice. "You're in the side now. You've got to play your role and help us out."
It shook Starcevich out of his funk. He started to move about, getting more vocal and willing himself into making a statement that day. There was no further need for politeness as, with Millane's prompting, he had earned his spot as much as anyone.

The stuff on the fight is great. Really conveys the chaos of it all. Amazing it all started from a kick to ankle..

Love Wright's call:

"There were three or four of them on 'Ned' and I was the next one in," Graham Wright said.

"I ran into Derek Kickett, who could 'go', and he turned around and went 'bang' and hit me right across the bridge of my nose. He cut me and I thought: 'That'll do me, you can sort that out yourself, Ned.'

I don't want to cause offense with my presence, but I noticed the thread title and had to ask: what's with the title of the book?

Urbandictionary defines a 'cakewalk' as "a mixture of the expressions 'a piece of cake' and 'a walk in the park.'" Used to describe a task that is extremely, ridiculously friggin easy."

Was it because the 1990 flag (of which I admit I know little about) was an easy feat for Collingwood, does the term "cakewalk" in this case refer to something else than its common usage, or has there simply been a mixup with the terminology?

Thanks. :)

No offence angrynaut.

I think it refers to a line in the collingwood theme song, which perhaps was more relevent in the 1930's than now, TBH.

" Oh the premiership's a cakewalk,
for the good old Collingwood"

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. Despite the fact that I know a fair few of the better team songs (Richmond has probably the best song) I can't say I've ever listened too closely to Collingwood's song, so I must've missed that. I'll take a closer listen next time.

Cheers!
