When do the new jumper numbers get assigned to the players? Is it after the rookie draft?

Unless my mind is failing me, my recollection is that the following numbers are available:

3
16
30
31
39
42
45
46
47
48

I am assuming that Petrenko may choose to change his #42 (though personally I'd like to see him keep it, somehow I feel it just suits him!), and that jumpers 46, 47 and 48 will be (re)introduced to cover the two new rookie positions and the "retired" number 19 guernsey. I believe Cook took Bassett's old number #8 leaving Cook's old #39 free.

I suppose it's a fair assumption that the three rookies we pick up and Donnelly will take guernseys 45-48, leaving the others for the rest of our draftees. This is how I'd like to see the others line up:

3) Phil Davis - somehow Davis just makes sense to me in #3. Not because he was our first rounder this year but his slender frame works in #3. Besides, if he can live up to the work ethic of Massie he'll be a gun!
16) William Young - To be honest I picked all the other numbers first and so Young just got 16 by default. Sorry Kenny :o I can see it though!
30) Shaun McKernan - After Jericho we need someone not afraid to crash into packs to bring some respect back to #30. Enter McKernan - his pack marks and mature body will see this number feared once again like in the days of Vardy!
31) Thomas Lee - For some reason pick #31 always seems to be the unfashionable type of player. Campbell, Krueger, Marsh... Lee strikes me as unfashionable but I'd love to see him break one of our worst jumper curses!
39) Rory Sloane - I have a hard-on for number 39, and I also have a hard on for Rory. It just fits!
42) Jared Petrenko - I don't know why but right from the start I've felt this number is right for him. Hopefully next year he can stake his claim over Lovett-Murray as the best running aboriginal defender in #42 :p

Edit: So, my mistake. Replace #48 with #35, forgot about Biggles.

I'd rather him live up to the work ethic and skill level of Darren Jarman.

3,16,30,31,35,39,45,46 will be free.

So
Davis #3
Young #16
Sloane #30
Lee #31
McKernan #35
Rookie Draft Pick 1 #39
Rookie Draft Pick 2 #45
Donelly #46

no.30 should be retired to commemorate Luke Jericho's herculean like power running and contested marking throughout his illustrious career.

#35, I knew I missed one! :o #47 just didn't seem right.

Apparently the numbers in Irish Lotto only go up to 45, so I'm going to say Donnelly should get #45 for luck :thumbsu: #35 can go to our first rookie, I don't want to change my numbers.
numbers should go up to 47, assuming we end up with 6 players on the rookie list (note: no.19 was retired, and a full list would contain 46 players...thus up to no.47).

Didn't Corey McKernan wear 31 for North? Does anyone reckon that will make it more/less likely that Shaun will take 31?

I can see Young in 16, probably because the way he looks and moves reminds me a lot of J Brown, it seems to just work.

Agree about Davis in 3 and Sloane 39, they seem right to me. But then maybe some current players will sneakily change numbers on us, like Bernie Vince switching to 17 when Welsh left - throwing everything into disarray.

And just if we weren't confused enough, Welsh took Vince's 28 at the Bulldogs!:o

I think all the changing in this respect has happened though, Dangerfield to 32 and Cook to 8.

I would love to see McKernan take number 31 and jump into packs ala Corey during the 90's. I'm excited!

As others have picked up. Or, by putting 39 in the list, are you assuming Cook has switched from his 39 to number 8?

is 41 & 43 already left for moss and martin? I hope petrenko goes a smaller number or if necessay goes down to 41 so rookies can be from 42 upwards but bock being 44 ruins all that. I thought originally 32 was going to be retired for 5 years! I prefer 19 not to be retired pernamanetly but i guess its just a number and not to get worked up over. i would have likedthe senior list go upto 40 then the rookie list from 41 onwards.....

41 and 43 are still with Martin and Moss (respectively), yes.

I don't mind rookies keeping their number. In some way it's kind of like a badge of honour. Bock can now point to his number and say he took the hard road to the AFL, getting on the rookie list on a lower salary, earning an upgrade to the main list and breaking into the side.

Similar to Hart's 34, it can be passed onto another player if he is seen to deserve it and if the player who's jumper it was agrees to it. Hart wanted to pass 34 onto Gallman, hence he did, I think similar may have happened with Roo and Dangerfield. Dangerfield getting the number 32 is a huge honour and shows how highly he is rated by the Crows inner sanctum.
