It is great to see a team with so many fresh faces. It is a great way to start a new team culture that has no fear of history...(ie hoodoos such as not beating Collingwood at MCG for 10 years.) The question is how do we manage them now they have been selected?

With Johncock, Thompson, Symes and Shirley possible inclusions in the next week or two...does the coaching staff just give the new guys one game and replace them regardless of their form against Collingwood or do they stick by what they have portrayed in the media in that they are in the team because their form and preparation has warranted their selection and they deserve their spot.

Obviously, Stiffy and Thommo are automatic selections in our best 22...just don't want to see the new guys get a token 1 game and then pushed back to the SANFL. Having said that someone has to make way for at least 2.

I think Stiffy and Thommo should come back regardless of what happens tomorrow. As for the other two, they only come back if they can prove they'll perform better than the youngsters. Current form should reign over last season's form, it's the only way to reward and encourage our youngsters.

I would suggest Petrenko is a guaranteed out once Johncock returns, as long as he does not go down the same path that Ashley Sampi took.

For Thompson... well, Dangerfield came in for him, it's just a question of whether they make the same like for like, or drop the least performing of him, Otten and Cook.

As for Symes, I think he is going to have to earn his spot back in a selection battle with good SANFL and training track form, like Shirley.

Johncock & Thompson will walk straight back into the team, with the two least performed of the youngsters being dropped (probably Dangermouse & Cook).

Symes & Shirley have to earn their way back into the side, justifying why they should be selected at the expense of the incumbents.

Thompson & Johncock are certainties, whereas Symes & Shirley will have to perform at SANFL level.
However, it is not just the younger newbies such as Cook, Dangerfield & Petrenko etc that have to compete with each other - surely every player particularly IMO Doughty, even Edwards :), etc all have to perform or lose their spots to anyone playing better.
A good situation to be in, trying to fit 30 odd players into 22.

I disagree with many and think Symesy should be back playing next week, unless he isnt fully fit yet - he will probably come in for like Myke Cook.

Shirley will probably have to preform at SANFL level if he is too come back any time soon.

Thompson will come in for Danger, Johncock for Petrenko which leaves Walker and Otten.

Will depend on who stands out today, those who stand up at the big time will obviously be ahead of those who look ouit of their depth.

The reason why we havent beaten Collingwood at the G for 10 years is because we have hardly ever played them there. Today is the 4th time since 1999 we have played Collingwood at the G. We played them there in 2000 when we were having a shit year, lost to them there in the 02 prelim and lost last year to them (that was when Birdman did his knee).

Hardy a hoodoo especially considering we have a very good record against them at the Telstra Dome, all those saying OMG the Crows havent beaten them at the G in 10 years need to actually look at the stats before labeling it as a hoodoo.

I just said the same thing in the Nick Gill thread

We seem to assume there'll be no more injuries and Thomo and Stiffy will have to fight it out with the current 22. Could happen, likely won't.

We'll use at least 30 players this season just like every other side

I'd like to see each of these guys get at least 10 or 15 games this year each. That might mean resting established players to free up spots if we don't have any injuries. These guys will be the core of our side for the next 10 years so provided form warrants I'd like to see some games put into their development.

Even so, if Thompson comes back next week it's suddenly looking a little tougher to split.

Cook 11 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles and a behind
Dangerfield 15 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles, 1.1
Otten 19 disposals, 6 marks, 1 tackle, 0.0
Petrenko 15 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles, 1.0

Who goes? It looks to me like Otten is the safest, feels like Cook and Dangerfield will be first cabs off the rank.

Cook is first to go...but gee, was i excited when he took that ripper of a mark, and only to be completely let down after he missed the sitter. Dangerfield, stats-wise, actually contributed as much as Petrenko, but Petrenko seemed to do a whole lot more...well, it seemed that way to me, despite their stats, DT and SC scores.

Damn, none of our five real youngsters have made it easy on the selection panel! :p I would suggest Dangerfield is the first out just by process of elimination, but none of them really played poorly!

In fact, Walker had the least impressive game, but fortunately for him there are no forwards to take his spot (unless Gill comes in).

Don't know about that NTRabbit, but one thing you can say for certain is that the times he was on the ground he looked damn impressive. He looked even classier and cleaner than last year. He is fast becoming one of my absolute favourite players.

Oh, that I know, but limited TOG usually means the player is carrying an injury, or is on the edge of the coaches thinking. His work today was superb.

He didn't appear injured, it would be disappointing if he was still thought of as a fringe player with Shirley and Thompson out though. Surely if that is the case he changed the coaches mind with his actions today.
