I've had a look at who each team drafted relative to what picks they had in the draft and I must say your club has done the best. Of course you haven't got a Cooney or Walker but you got the absolute best you could get with your picks.

You have got some real good talent in Chaplin, Symes and Peel while Pettigrew and Surjan are more deveopment types but are awesome athletes and are capable of anything really.

I go for the bombers and I was spewing when we picked up Kepler Bradley pick 6 [we should've got Kane Tenace] cos I was hoping Chaplin would slip through to us at 13 and I knew we wouldn't take 2 talls at 6 and 13. He was a steal at 15 for you guys.

Still can't work out how Surjan got through to the pre-season draft either from all the promising things I've heard.

With the exception of RFK you have done real well, your recruiters should be commended.

I think one reason why we got most of the players we did is because none of them were rated much for their physicality in junior football - I think the Bulldogs showed how badly that can become a weakness, and so we saw a bloke like Tenace drop a good way from being a top two pick.

Nevertheless, I think we did OK.

I've actually become very suspiscious about us getting highly rated youngsters that don't get taken at their expected position...

A certain WA midfielder that I am an unashamed fan of doesn't fall into that category. Sometimes criticised for being over physical instead of using his natural skill, talent and speed to its potential on the park.

They'll learn quickly to play physical football.

You're quite right, I wasn't taking the preseason draft into account with that.

Like Nick Stevens going late, Chad Cornes going early, Josh Carr going early, Paul Koulouriotis going early, Dom Cassisi going late, Damon White going late, Salopek going late, Chaplin going late and Surjan going late?

I just want to point out that Koula was touted as a top ten pick and therefore at pick 12 you could actually say he was picked up late, though it's not all that extreme a difference.

Late but not late enough! ;)

You can't comment on White, Salopek, Chaplin, Surjan and possibly Cassisi thus far. The former four have done SFA at AFL level, unlike other draftees who are already contributing at the highest standard.

I hope they all become guns, it just seems strange that we always pick up these guys that slip in the draft... there are reasons for this occurring.

If he had showed even the slightest inkling of talent at Port during his time here, he would have played plenty more games. Saying that it was just unlucky, or that other performing players kept him out each time is not facing to facts. He was on Port's list for long enough time to at least have shown much more than he did. Quality rises to the top eventually...now watch him sink without a trace at.....um......where'd he go again? :p

FYI, he's playing at Geelong now. *rolls her eyes* I don't know if you know them or not, they wear navy blue and white hoops and go by the nickname of 'Cats'... I'd watch out for him if I were you.

'If he had shown the slightest inkling of talent at Port'.
How could he do so if he only played three games, all in his first year, no less? He definitely showed talent at West and I'm not the only one who reckons that he merited a shot in the AFL.

You may think I am not facing the facts, but the fact is, he was mismanaged at Port and West both, and in that, he was unlucky.

Would you say that Toby Thurstans should have shown that he's as good as he is in his second year? He debuted in his fifth year. Not everyone is an instant star, nor does everyone who has the ability play AFL. Quality does not rise to the top in all cases, and even as you say eventually, eventually may not be now, or even at all.

When you consider hacks like Michael Stevens, Chris Hall, Brayden Lyle, Derek Murray, Adam Kingsley, Cockatoo - Collins, Adam Morgan, Steven Daniels, and Mark Harwood all received games in front of Koulouriotis. and others such as Nick Stevens were persisted with despite being as soft as fairy floss, I'd say Paul was very unlucky. Geelong's gain is our loss.

Most big guys do take longer to develop, re comment on Toby.
You never know Koula could turn into a Tom Harley type ex Port player at Geelong and become a very servicable player. Time we tell, but anyway its not really our problem now.

It could quite well be your problem if he tears you apart on the field!

Sometimes it's good strategy to keep players for yourselves than taking the chance that letting him go might come back to haunt you. I don't know about your 'could' because I'm leaning so far I'm falling over on to the 'will' side of the debate. Just because a player doesn't perform instantly he isn't a hack, and as FP said, he has been rather unlucky, and nobody can deny that success is a result of taking advantage of luck.

Paul has had hardly anything to take advantage of... yet. Though you'd have to say he's done pretty well so far with what he's had.

FP please remove the rose coloured glasses, KG I have learnt to live with while having the occassional jibe but you're just plain silly.

Well if Koula kicks the winning goal to finish our season, I will come back and say you were right. But as I, said time will tell, until then I am not going to say what he can and cant do at AFL level because no one has seen him apart from 3 games which he hardly touched the ball.

Do you call 17 disposals over 4 quarters 'hardly touch[ing] the ball'?

I actually think you have been saying what he 'can and can't do' and I find your sudden impartiality disturbing. Otherwise why say you already have seen what he can do (referring to your earlier post in this thread)?

You confuse me. Is it any wonder you fail to convince me otherwise of Koula's abilities?

16 Disposals, 3 OOF. I can't argue about the 4 quarters as the stats page doesn't list this, and I go to matches to concentrate on Port, not 1 player.

Koula may have still been with us if we were allowed to develop players over years instead of turning to the draft, but the draft is a requirement, and 3 games in 4 years, none in the last 3 does not scream for retention.

nice comeback Shane :)

Paul was crap..now he's gone...who cares...he'll do nothing at Geelong..get delisted within two years and sod off into ex - big-wrap-afl-next-big-thing-abyss...Port will always be around..Paul won't..:)..

You give him two years!?!

My sudden impartiality is obviously because he is no longer a Port Adelaide player.

As I recall he was delisted in September, not in between your first post in this thread and the one I previously addressed.
