I would imagine, that in times long past, United was used to refer to a new team created to represent a location when two or more smaller teams combined (or united) to create a bigger team worthy of the name of the town.
For example. Pugswaddle FC, AFC Pigswill and Athletico Potato are all suburbs of a city (Ustinki) without 1 big professional football team. The 3 suburban teams combine/merge/unite to form "Ustinki United FC".
Or I could be wrong.
In this instance, I would venture that the owners are trying firstly for a name that evokes 'Soccer', but has none of the 'ethnic' conotations of the old style NSL teams (Juventus, Croatia, Hellas etc), and secondly the name United could represent all of Adelaide (Uniting if you will) behind 1 football team. I am glad they didn't go for one of those godforsaken non-entity Americanism names like Fire/Jazz etc. United is nice and simple....let the fans come up with their own nicknames for the club when the time is right.
Thats just my take on it.
Cheers,
Kasey
