And...

Melton to MCG - 46km.

Says more about the originating location than destination.

yes, St Kilda supporters and Princes Park,

who's in the majority out Melton way?

People from Melbourne wont go to Geelong for home games, from the SE to Geelong would be a ****ing nightmare. It takes some from the east/south east an hour to get to MCG/Docklands, that would be a four hour commute.

Fair enough, but if the Western Bulldogs or even North are playing GC or GWS, Skilled would be a perfect sized venue for a crowd less than 20K

Easier solution - just knock out 5 teams.

The problem here is that the 500,000 - 1,000,000 plus disenfranchised supporters of these clubs aren't going to go clamboring aboard any other gimmick club no matter how sweetly the AFL marketing department wrap it up..

We're not Western Australians.

Is that why Victorians get up early every day, in fact 2-3 hours every day?:thumbsu:

Waverley Park...should have been renovated, instead of sold of for 1/10 its value by the AFL.
.
IF they every open up the green wedges, then build it there, in the south east, where 1.3 million people or something leave east of warrugal road.

What about persuading the government to hand the AFL watsonia :P.

there's land in and around dandenong and thats about 30k from the city and not far from the train line.

a 40k to 50k stadium would do wonders for that desolate community.

Waverley was a hole. The AFL moved towards centralised stadiums and crowds boomed, the stadiums were of higher quality, they were located in a more appealing area.

Waverley was a pain to get to, it was in the middle of nowhere and it seemed like a coldest place on earth come game day. A stadium in Dandenong would be unappealing to at least half the population of Melbourne, not to mention that its Dandenong.

The obvious place is the site of the old Olympic Park stadium, which is about to be demolished. Central to everyone, in Melbourne's sports precinct, all forms of public transport laid on from all directions. Build a boutique 25000 - 30000 stadium a la Metricon right between AAMI Park and the Lexus Centre- it would be the MCG number 2 ground, for lower drawing games. And the government should foot the bill seeing as it paid for 100% of AAMI Park

Don't need in more stadiums in the centre of Melb!

Cranbourne would be good, essay to get to by road and rail. Could redevelop the ground already there.

Good location for North & Dogs, parking no issue, electrified rail line. Could do worse I reckon. The land wouldn't be as expensive as closer to the city.

Does Altona solve any issues that Etihad doesn't/didn't?

West of the CBD,
Serviced by Light Rail, Bus and Rail
Almost unlimited parking.
Close to Whitten Oval and Arden Street.
No expense involved as the stadium will be inherited by the AFL.

Strike a deal with a larger regional capital in rural Victoria. Play interstate games there. Totally possible, fans will bitch, but you can't deny it would be nice to catch a scenic train ride, rock up in a town with a storied history to watch your team play an interstate club

Lol at everyone suggesting cranbourne, frankston etc over centrally located ideas. You may live on the mornington peninsula, gippsland etc, but you choose to live there. Central grounds suit those on all sides of the city as well as country folk traveling by Vline.

To be fair, it's just the St Kilda supporters that think Frankston makes a viable option.

I can remeber a time when Waverly seemed pretty modern compared to the other suburban grounds in use.
It seemed cold when it was cold ( I'm a big fan of the Ettihad roof :D ) welcome to Victoria in winter.
Waverley was a pain to get to when you live in Essendon. It was good to get there if you lived in... say Glen Waverly, Roweville, Ferntree Gully, Traralgon , Warragul.
The shortcomings of a public transport system in this state is a whole other topic. The Glen Waverly line SHOULD have been extended and still needs to be extended, though they have made it very hard to do so.
I find travelling to the MCG with my family is a major pain. Parking the car is as much a hassle as it ever was at Waverly ( is that muddy paddock they call a carpark really the best they could do? How about a high rise or below ground - well designed park so the field around the stadium could become parkland ) , and driving to an out of the way railway station for a one hour + trip in a crowded carriage is not fun at all .

Coming off the freeway and parking at the Casino to walk to Etihad is just too easy in comparison.

Yep, quite easily - or in Southbank/Arts Centre.
Yes and tonnes of people do this, one of the reasons the bridge was built between Birrarung Mar and the 'G.

The City Road / Southbank Boulevard intersection is equal distance between the 'G and Docklands Stadium. Not to mention the Batman Avenue tram extension built to accommodate the sporting precinct for all manner of events.
