Ling is the King. So who else like him for us is a too-small for AFL full forward? Built like a proverbial outhouse, can still take marks they shouldn't be able to up forward and can play as a mercurial playmaker from half-back if given the ball?

Voila, La Caff. If he just could get the tank and a dose of the Ling nasties, he'd present a headache to oppositions.

Alternatively, JMac has the speed and kamikazee to do a job, and delivers so beautifully with the low flat accurate kicks to hurt other teams on rebound.

Are these emerging tagger options I see before me or just delusions of wishfulness? Other options?

A waste IMO .... Daisy has the x factor and the sooner he returns to it the better.

The rotating tag he and Johnson played on Judd when we played Carlton was doosey, regardless of how the filth argue the usurping of their king.

I think Daisy has room for this kind of specialty tag.

As for taggers... hmn... who were our 'taggers' this year?

Love the Caff. I have described him as a brick portapotty. I wondered why we would get Ball when we had blokes like Caff that could be played in a similar role. Tagger is not far off his playing roles. And to have a tagger who can play off his taggee and hurt them on the scoreboard is a bonus. :thumbsu:

I'd say Ball and Caff will play both "protecting" roles for our young mids, defending them from attacks form other teams, similar to how Geelong look after Ablett, StKilda - Dal Santo, Carlton - Murphy.

I see Thomas as capable of a specialist tagging role, especially on the offensive half backs of the league like Hodge, Drummond etc, and sometimes going into the midfield for a role on an explosive player like Judd, Cooney or even Ablett.

Barham is the one we are trying to make into a tagger, you just don't want him getting the ball.:p

I heard Simon Buckley talk on SEN and he said that Mick wanted him to try shape himself as a tagger. I think he could be a smokey for a decent tagger. he has the pace, he has the bulk (he will only get bigger) and he can develop his engine. thoughts??

Very interesting that is. I really liked Rhyce Shaw in his tagging role but when he got the footy, we all got frustrated.

If Buckley can get the accountability and endurance right, he has the speed and body to go with some very good players. Could hurt them when he got the footy too, which all really goof taggers do.

I've seen it frustrate the hell out of good players when they play on a quick tagger. The player can get the slip but can be caught up to quite quickly by a speedy tagger.

Caff is the other I'd think could take to this role.

Ben Johnson-Dale Thomas Would be good against teams like

ST Kilda,Geelong,Carlton and them teams with the guns.

They kept Judd to like 20 Possies and they had together 48 or something.

Toovey - has everything you want from a tagger.

Quick, long arms, a decent tackle, and is one of the closest marking defenders I have seen in my life.

Good point Matty. :thumbsu:
PornStar Jax has superquick closing speed dragging opposition players from behind. Thomas and Barham tackling remind me of cheetahs running down antelopes. :)

I like to see Tristan Francis get a game in the seniors at one stage & trial him as a tagger, reminds me of Aaron Joseph. But I think someone like Buckley would be ideal, we already have enough flankers so a tagging role maybe perfect for him

Buckley is renowned for being offensively minded, so it would be quite a turnaround for him to become a quality tagger. That's not to say it can't happen though.

Tristan Francis has the mindset and the skillset. I have also seen Wellingham put in some sterling performances effectively as a tagger, and to do the job he'd only need to improve his concentration over four quarters.

Another vote for Tristan Francis, from outside the 22. The only one inside the 22 with the capability is Swan, and I seem to be the only one who thinks it's worth a try.

Wellingham's problem isn't concentration, it's heart, which excludeds him from the tagger discussion.

Even though I'm not MDC, and the question wasn't directed at me, I'll chime in and throw my support behind Barham as a tagger.

Quick, tenacious, has good endurance and a good tackler. Isn't good enough offensively to be anything else for mine.

If you cannot kick you cannot play AFL footy. As someone else said somewhere, he is possicbly the worst kick of any player in the competition.

(cough) ... Ryan Cook .... (cough) .... Cheesy O'Bree .... (cough) ... :p

A tagging role for Barham would be ideal. Heaps of dash, tackles extremely well and more chance laying off a handball than a kick.

If he could kick as well as either of those he has a long career ahead of him (and thats NOT a compliment), but he doesn't. I rate him in every other aspect so i hope he gets there.

What are your thoughts on Barham as a potential tagger, mdc?

I thought his job on Luke Power was hands down our best tagging performance of the year.

But even if he gets his kicking up to a passable level, I'm not sure it's ideal having a 5"11 skinny tagger. When you look at guys like Ling and Clinton Jones and Kane Cornes to a lesser extent, a lot of their stopping power comes from being able to push and nudge their opponent in unfavourable directions before they get the ball. Can't see Barham being able to do the same.

Fair Enough there - Barham can do a Good Run-With Role but could not Stop someone because he is not Big Enough yet
