Have they changed it from top 40 again?
If this is still accurate, then yes.

JAMARRA Ugle-Hagan will be the last of his kind, with the AFL changing its Next Generation Academy rules to disallow clubs having access to top talents under the program.

As first revealed by AFL.com.au in August, the AFL will put into place a 'protected' zone for NGA players in the first 20 picks of the draft.

It means from 2021 Academy players, such as Ugle-Hagan with the Bulldogs and Lachie Jones for Port Adelaide this year, who attract bids in the first 20 picks will fall into the open pool with their NGA clubs not being able to match the bids.

Top 20 in 2021, top 40 from 2022 onwards.

Such stupid arbitrary numbers too, 20 and 40.

Surely you say 1st round and 2nd round???
No they'd get criticised for that too.

"First round" gets confusing when there are priority picks or compensation picks. If there is a compensation pick in the first round then the premier gets pushed out from pick 18 to to pick 19, but it's still regarded as being first round. Yet in other years the first round ends at pick 18. Can't have that randomness if you're going to be fair and consistent. Best to specify a certain number of picks.

But I agree there's nothing magic about 20 or 40. They should say top 18 or top 36 instead. That would be an AFL-specific number and would make sense.

I guess most people are so used to working in multiples of 10 they go with that.

Hahaha very good point, these campaigners have genuinely no idea sometime it’s mindboggling
On this occasion I'm defending them, but I agree a lot of the time they do seem to have NFI.:)

Congrats to all for making it into their Under 18's team

Didn't know Tsia was aligned. Sound like a promising prospect. Hopefully after pick 40. This is from draft central:
#9 Alex Tsia (Western Jets)
28/04/2005 | 181cm | Small Forward

Tsia turned out for Metro’s Under 17s as a bottom-ager last year, and backed it up on Sunday with glimpses of his exciting talent. The mercurial small forward kicked two eye-catching goals in the first half, sending home an instinctive snap and checkside on the move. His turn of speed, evasiveness, and creativity all proved troublesome for Queensland’s defenders, with Tsia’s smarts seeing him carve up the opposition from dangerous spots in attack. Great to watch at his best.

Another potential NGA prospect for the future is 16 year old Keighton Matofai-Forbes

Currently playing for Western Jets as an underager and played his first Senior game for Keilor in the EDFL

Article about him says he’s a key forward and kicked 4 on debut for Keilor.
