Not if England continue on the Bazball route, pitches are flat there and the dukes haven't done as much as they used to in the last 3 or 4 years. Shield pitches are harder to bat on than county pitches now.

It's funny how our philosophies have basically flipped.

The Dukes used to have the more pronounced seam and swing longer while they put out green seamers, while the Kookaburra would get old fast on our hard pitches.

Now the Kookas have emphasised the pronounced seam and double lacquer to swing longer while our pitches have turned into greener seamers while the Dukes is softer and ages faster while they put out faster hard decks to help Bazball.

I partially blame this for our anaemic batting - It's so much harder to learn how to put together long innings now given the balls and pitches have a ball with your name on it every other over.

I've actually been somewhat shocked that Boland has been retained as the reserve bowler.

Age is one part, but I thought he'd been somewhat exposed as below the level by England last he played. His story was immense when he joined the team, but that was such a purple patch so far above his career output, and he's reverted back to being the solid shield level bowler he always has been that's a step below test level. At 35 I though he would've been moved on from last summer tbh.

Agreed. This forum won't like this, but Boland is just not that good. His test stats are drastically padded by demolishing a beaten-up England one summer, and then South Africa the next.

Rocchiccioli perhaps due to necessity (Lyon potentially near the end and always needing multiple spinners in subcontinent)
Davies IMHO not quite 'on the verge' yet. Still has an annoying habit of getting starts and gifting his wicket with a loose shot.

Kontas maybe simply due to lack of options. But I'd want to see more. There's been plenty of Next Big Things who've had a few good innings early but then faded.

Philippe nowhere near it IMHO, and has struggled for consistency in the red ball game. Not sure what Paine is smoking here.....

I'm not as down on Davies. I don't think he's on the verge yet, but he could well be on the verge of being on the verge if that makes sense. I think he's one they like but he has a couple things to work on. I can see him getting there, maybe in 2026 entering his prime. If he goes on a real run of form the maybe next yr if he's lucky. Does average 46 in FC so far.

Quite a few players come onto the scene in Shield cricket and look quite promising initially. Put some scores together. First whispers of possible future Australian player are heard.

Then they flatline and are spat out of the system.

I asked a current first class player about this and he said when players come on the scene no one knows much about them. Pretty soon though they have a mountain of data. Where they score, which bowlers trouble them, how to dry up their runs, technical weaknesses, psychological weaknesses.

The game gets harder and once they've had a few failures the pressure gets to them and they mentally fold.

It's why often the Shield teams are full of older players, who have been through this, have matured, honed their game and come out the other side.

Made me wonder about how young players are steered through their first season or two. Do they need more technical development? We (cricket in Australia as a broad royal we I mean) provide lots of resources for players in the junior national pathway but are players 21-25yo the ones in greater need of assistance?

england enjoyed his sameyness and slightly less pace. much more effective against watchful batters.

would have loved to see neser get a gig in the last ashes but no dice. might not have made much difference in the end. time and injury not on his side now.

Johnson and Philippe I think overrated due to being good BBL players. Johnson looks great no doubt but no way I'd pick him over Joel Paris, needs to play more shield cricket. Philippe just doesn't seem to get it done enough, I'd want a solid season and a half from him to get me on board.

Agree that Goodwin looks the goods, as does Lovell. Still big on McSweeney. Also quite like Jack Clayton.

Vic seem to have a supply of youngish quicks(bar Sid)in O'Neill, Perry, Crone, Elliott etc, plus some decent young bats coming through in Kellaway, Peake, Rogers, Kellaway, Dixon etc...providing the state with a squad capable of emulating the feats of thar Vic side a few years back and WA of recent.

I thought I was the only one who thinks Johnson is waaaay overrated. I just don't see it with him outside of white ball.

I think Vic would be looking for any good excuse to pick him, but he hasn't had a great start to the season in Grade. Made a ton on the weekend though so hopefully gets going now. Missed out in both innings of the Vic 2nd XI game this week unfortunately.

Peake did get a game however and looked good with a 40* in the second innings.

Bowlers lack the pace to get a look in at the next level unless there is a change in thinking.

Peake looks like a Test Player in waiting and in my opinion by far our best prospect

How do you feel about Konstas? From what I've seen it seems to be temperament that's holding him back from dominating the Shield at this early point in his career, not technique.

I think you’ve summed it up - it will be interesting to see which way he goes, clearly he has talent but at this level everyone does - hopefully he goes down a better path than Fraser/McGurk

Plenty of time yet but it is gonna be tough for him. He is also English so may choose to go down that path to play cricket all year round.
