What's everyone's thoughts on Fergus O'neill? I feel like he is easy to ignore because he is just not that quick. I feel like people have just thought "he is in really good form" for over a year now but the number of wickets he's been taking make him hard to ignore. He won the young cricketer of the year award but I just feel like he will be the type of player who tops out as a very good shield cricketer. I guess he has been a beneficiary of the bowling friendly pitches mentioned

He'll be handy in English and New Zealand conditions.

Maybe that he's played 14 test matches in the last 12 months, plus several white ball tours, and given there's another test tour in a few weeks time, a week at home with his family might actually be good for him?
So what? He needs a decent hit in the middle. They can always give the gloves to Nielsen and have him play as a batsman only. Sitting on his backside's not doing anything for him.

The coaching team that just won a World Test Championship and a World Cup are probably better placed to know what he needs than you or I are.

It's made for more entertaining matches but I'm not sure it's producing better test cricketers

Given the crowds, I'm not sure a focus on entertainment is necessary
It seems a bit contradictory to have rule changes for "entertainment" and then schedule so many Mon-Thu and Tue-Fri games, so nobody can watch said entertainment even if they wish to.

I think his form is becoming hard to ignore, he gets wickets, and doesnt go for runs. He’s also fairly handy with the bat. Not every bowler needs to be a tear away quick, balance is key, particularly in places like the UK.

So I'm not entitled to an opinion because it disagrees with yours? Okay, gotcha, now piss pff.
I didn't say any of that. I don't particularly have an opinion one way or the other. The first response was offering a potential reason for him not playing, and the one you've taken offence to is literally saying we don't know what he needs, so let's leave it to the coaches, who seem to be doing a pretty good job, all things considered.

But nice chat, anyway...

Chadd Sayers MkII - fwiw I thought he deserved more of a go as well but he’ll suffer due to his lack of pace

Based mainly off a couple of big bash games and some highlights, I think he's missing those key attributes of pace, height and bounce that the National side loves to have.

So he'll take 400+ wickets for Victoria. Happy with that

If we’re going by talent, then why not Josh Brown?

I’m not seriously suggesting this. Point is, there is no shortage of “talent”. There are huge numbers of young men who can strike a ball.

Do they have the temperament and technique?

Warner’s technique, and Gilchrist’s for that matter, was quite good.

Chest on action, bad hair, nibbles it....Siddle mark II?

What do you think my point is?

It's very concerning. We need one or two of these young batsmen to break through and start putting upward pressure on our test team. At the moment, they're just consistently failing.
So he failed once and youre off him? Do you microwave your football membership too when they lose?

Seems a bit fair weather,

I didn’t see the post praising him for seeing the Victorians home in the second innings after being a touch shaky at one point

Goes in the long list of good - very good Aussie state cricketers. Trent Copeland, Chad Sayers, Matthew Inness as a throwback

I’ll happily go against him - Warner always had a solid technique combined with an aggressive outlook. JFM has none of the former.
Ill go pro Gurkin, he has the best hand eye co - ordination this country has seen since lot 17, 15 Maxwell Court NOBLE PARK burst onto the scene for Fitzroy Doncaster as a 17 year old

I'm a +1 for flatter decks in Shield cricket.

Knowing how to turn starts into 50s, and 50s into 100s, is a skill in of itself. Learning how to bat all day and knowing when to shift up gears or absorb a spell of good bowling is a skill. Even on flat pitches you'll get the odd good spell where a bowler is hitting a line and length that's hard to put away. Learning to get through that and cash in is invaluable.

Right now getting a 40 is a decent effort when the pitch is constantly making the entire session a good spell you're trying to fight through.

Having said all that, not every single pitch should always been flat, variety is key. But a decent % of batting decks is needed.

Is it really the decks? Or is it a decline in batting standards? Or a bit of both?
