Shaky start from Anderson against two guys who go hard in Weatherald and Jewell. Nice moment to get FC wicket number 1 - probably more relief than excitement for most unless you get it early in your first spell.

I guess the NSW conract list may depend a bit on the new coaching appointment, however they would be silly not to upgrade him if they have the space. It probably all comes down to who is off contract etc.

You seem to have a special interest in Anderson - did you coach him or were invloved in teams he played in as a young kid?

Jye Richardson currently averaging 31.66.
He is the exception. Generally FC @30 wont get you a Baggy Green, or at least it should not.
Only two regular pace bowlers averaging over 30:
Jackson Bird- 7 games, 19 wickets @30.78
Ryan Hadley- 6 games, 12 wickets @34.25
Hadley needs to be booted.

Of the current five top list bowlers only one has career figures that will alert national selectors, Gabe Bell 53 @24.7. Liam Hatcher has dropped to below @30 for first time off the back of his current good season, still round career @29 tho. Sam Elliott is only other one under 25 but has only played 13 matches.

His economy dropped the longer he bowled so telling me he was prob suffering from first game nerves. I expect he felt more relief rather than elation when he bagged Wakim.

Sam Elliot- when he first came on the scene I didnt think he would be a future Aussie contender, however he is a real wicket taker.

Big, tall, strong - hits a length, swings it a little, moves it off the seam. If he continues at this rate. 50 wickets @ 22.76 with an econmy of 2.94 and strike rate of 46.4 from his 13 games then he might be one that is considered post the current big 4 of Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood, Boland.

He took some tap against WA this shield game, but hit back strongly after going at 5 an over from his first 13 overs to finish with a 5fa.

Might see him on the next A tour in red ball games - I think he toured India in 2025 with the A team but need to check if that was only white ball. Handy lower order batter averaging an excellent 23.29 in FC games

Bell is in that older age bracket abut to turn 31. Not sure whether the selectors will decide to bypass that age bracket and look to the guys in their 20's as the likely next replacements to the main guys.

No I have explained to you I follow certain cricketers that impress me. There are my favorites and like others in the past like Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Ellis, Anderson is my latest.
Have you read my Ellis piece, re a privileged vs hard grind cricket beginning, well Anderson did attend a prestigious private school then went into the state pathways system so he had an early foot in the door. It is the majority, like Ellis, that have scraped their way thru club comps in their struggle for recognition. Anderson has talent and promise but there is no doubting that his privileged back ground has piggy backed him to his present position as well.
I believe Ellis approached Cricket NSW years ago after a few stellar season in Sydney PC and was told he would never play for NSW. Its a great story of self belief and perseverance with his move to Tassie and now a mainstay of the Australian T20 team.

Hopefully Anderson gets a few more poles today. Might be some good opportunities if Tassie are looking to score quick runs and force a result.

Not impressed?

Capable of bowling high speeds (mid 140's), swings the ball. Only 27 years old and early in his FC career currently playing his 13th game.

I think he is definitely worth perservering with to see if he can find some more consistency. NSW have ageing fast bowlers - Abbott, Dwarshius, Stobo - I think Hadley is definitely one to keep around.

We also should consider the stats with a degree of caution. If your home ground is the MCG, you bowling stats are going to look a whole lot better than if you play at Cricket Central.

Average scores in this Shield comp by venue tell me that the bowlers whose home grounds are Cricket Central, Allan Border Field or the Gabba are not going to have as a good a record as those bowling at the MCG, Bellerive or the WACA regulalry.

Below table shows average innigs scores and bowling average for this shield season by venue. Selections of teams is not purely stat based - venues definitely come in to it.

GroundAverage Innings ScoreBowling Average
Cricket Central (Sydney)50746.80
Allan Border Field (Brisbane)43641.20
The Gabba (Brisbane)26832.85
Adelaide Oval (Adelaide)26330.12
SCG (Sydney)23328.45
Junction Oval (Melbourne)22626.15
WACA Ground (Perth)21427.60
Bellerive Oval (Hobart)20824.32

Its a little bit over the top all the hate Cam Greens getting.. yea he isn't as good as we thought but he'll still be a fine player for Australia, just needs to get dropped and go work on his game.

i think the main issue is that he's been given a considerably longer leash than someone like beau webster who hasn't done anything wrong when playing in tests.

let's call a spade a spade, his ashes was shit. bowling wasn't up to scratch, batting was ordinary (along with a number of other players to be fair) and his fielding was passable. in a just world, he'd have been dropped for the shot he made in brisbane when he got bowled on 45, but he remained in the side for little additional value beyond being a walking wicket. in melbourne, on a frankly difficult wicket, he once again had the opportunity to play a steadying innings and threw his wicket away.

Yep another of those good seamers stuck in a log jam behind the Big 3 for years.
Ryan Hadley- 6 games, 12 wickets @34.25
13g career 32w @36. Neither are first class standard Cullinan. He made his debut three yrs ago, so is not early in his career. A bakers dozen matches over three seasons, spells INCONSISTENT doesnt it to you. Retain him and all he will do is hold up a crop of promising quicks from his own state, led by Charlie Anderson. Send him back to a club career with Manly.

Disgusting to tell a young cricketer that. Expect he hates his birth state with a passion over that comment.

Reminds me a bit of Jo Angel, even if Sam is a few inches shorter. Just has that solid, reliable oxen kind of look to him.

Am following Kennedy and Scott. Was following Miller. Will look up others (my figures dont tally with yours?). Colgan mine read 1040 @69.3 for 25/26. Guessing he is well over 25 given his 14 yr career to date.
Colgan Played PG's last season so is max 21 or 22 now. Had to be under 21 on 1 September 2024 to qualify for that last season.

My numbers from Play cricket First Grade (Belvidere Cup) probably excludes the T20 comp. T20 is hit and miss for their averages

Who would the replacements. Outside of Anderson, what other non listed quicks are Shield ready now?

What has happened to Nisbet? I think he played Aussie A in the winter series against Sri Lanka. He played a few PC games early this season but havent seen him since. I heard it was a quad injury?

Francis debuted in One Day Cup. I beleive he bowls a bit straight which at his pace can be problematic without the right conditions. Maybe he can add some more skill and get some movement. Very handy with the bat.

Doddrell - ive heard there may be other issues there but that is just rumour.

As for Hunar Verma - I fear that ship has well and truly sailed. He got the yips in a really bad way and I dont think he has bowled this season?

I remember the hype around Simpson. He is still one of the faster bowlers arounf Sydney PC cricket, but he gets a lot of tap in many games. He would need to improve his consistency to play at a higher level or he would be too expensive and not build any pressure. Great to see a reward for a strong PC season and get second x1 exposure. It can only improve his game and also give him some extra motivation that he is close.

If he aint already playing BBL he should be given this display of power batting.
Kingsell is one I have in my little black book. Has already made Belvidere Cup history by becoming the youngest player to score a red ball double century in the 125 year long comp. At a tender 19 years and 163 days old.

There are some good videos on YouTube of him training, he looks a real talent.

Looking at his stats, he’s had some massive scores along with some quieter games in grade cricket.

I’d say they would be after some consistency next season as he’s only played the 1 2nd 11 game.

He got the yips in a really bad way
The yips, an educated guess critical anxiety caused by being treated like dirt by Blues selectors, specially coach Greg Shippherd. I said at the time being sacked without a single top game must have shattered the kid. His PC profile has him playing but batting only this season and batting well. His last decent season was 22/23, a yr before his inexplicable axing. That tells me a lot.
I think he played Aussie A in the winter series against Sri Lanka.
Yeh he did and picked up a handful of white ball poles but was not chosen in the unofficial Tests. His short but profitable FC career suggested he deserved to, ahead of Mitch Perry. Nisbet played only five fairly mediocre PC games this season before his injury.
Doddrell - ive heard there may be other issues there but that is just rumour.
Do tell.

Just got round to catching up with the vids. First thing that struck me was Kingsells stance after the ball release, not a lot of footwork thus exposing his off stump. Seems the old rule of back and across is dead and the reason is these kids grow up with virtually all white ball or limited overs red ball cricket where protecting your stumps is seen as not important.

His coaches need to drum into him that to succeed at the top FC level you have to have three major attributes, a compact technique, good footwork, perseverance. He is compact with eyes over the ball at point of contact so is not playing away from his body either on the back or front foot in attack and defense. The kid only needs to concentrate on moving his back foot across to protect his off stump so he does not give a good bowler an easy target. Time will tell if he has the perseverance as a cricket journey can be long and unpredictable.

Will not / does not happen

“We assume everyone at Talent Pathway level can defend their stumps”

I stand corrected but this is the first time in my memory that state U19s have played red ball cricket. This age group has been playing international red ball youth Tests with other nations for several yrs now, so is this a CA or individual state idea to better prepare our boys for any upcoming international encounters.

I like this idea as it is a welcome change from the glut of underage white ball cricket. Permanent underage red ball state fixtures is now on my wish list as is an U19 world Test championship.

After a first day washout the Blues/Vics match is evenly poised at stumps on day 2.

A ton by Nitesh Samuel and 55* by Alex Lee-Young has the Blues just edging ahead then declaring this morning.

Vics have declared after a maximum from Archie Flynn. Can the Blues reach the 180ish target in the last session. An exciting finish awaits as the game reverts to white ball mode.

Blues well on track, 116 off 20 without loss with Samuel pushing towards his second century of the match. No cigar as he falls short. Blues now 140 and closing in fast on this win. There it is. Samuel my MVP.

Special mention to Flynn and the impressive lofty Vics quick Tom Paddington.
The kid who hit the winning run, Blake Cattle is still 16 or just turned 17 and is already playing Greater Sydney Firsts.
