Clement for the next 2 seasons........then Heath Shaw for the long term. He has leadership written all over his game and he seems to handle himself well in front of a camera.

Perhaps, however, as it stands now, Maxwell is neither good enough, nor inspiring enough to be captain.

Clement should be captain over our transition period. He's still got a couple of years in him, perhaps then, if Maxwell has strung together a couple of good solid seasons, with a vast improvement, then perhaps then he can step into the role.

Right now he is no where near a captain.

How bout Didak...

Inspiring? you serious a bloke throwing his body to the mercy of the opposition inspires me. Didak no, let the boy play football free of that kind of pressure.

J.Fraser will get it

I dont think he wants it. He mentioned in a recent interview he is not sure its for him.

I would have thought it would sit with him well......he begs to differ. Captaincy is so much more than leading the boys at training and out on the field these days. You have to almost be a media darling as well.......and apparently this doesn't come naturally for Fraser.

are u sure ur not getting josh confused with b.johnson??

josh is very well spoken off the field

Nick Maxwell is a leader no doubt,

and i say this with all due respect, if any of you take a close look at the way H. Shaw plays, instructs, directs on the football field
I'm sure you would agree that it is a no brainer.
H. Shaw will 100% captain the Collingwood Football Club.

Some may laugh, but i'm a big believer in giving the captaincy to the best player on the team.

Once Buckley retires (either this year or next):

Hand it over to James Clement; After Clement retires in 3 years,

My future captain (maybe in 2011) would be;

Dale Thomas (as he is the best of our youngsters at the moment)

I think the general consensus of Clement for the next 2-3 years is the go. A true leader of the young brigade has yet to come through in my humble opinion. This will give the likes of Thomas, H Shaw, Pendlebury, Johnson, Davies (jokes), Fraser and Swan time to rise up for the mantle of Captain. I think Maxwell would be a good captain from a team perspective, but unfortunately an AFL captain really needs to be more than that. They need to have a profile or at least a marketability that has broad appeal that club can promote to its members and outsiders. Maxwell has neither and is really just a club favourite. I can't see him becoming Captain.

Fraser for my mind strikes me as a guy that could do the job, but would be something of a reluctant captain. I think he thinks too much, which sees him build pressure on himself. Johnson has a past to content with which might prevent him being a captain, plus I don't know if he's that flash in front of a camera with the media. I know that can be trained, but there is a certain natural charisma that most captains have and he doesn't have it. Swan is probably somewhere in the same category of Maxwell. H Shaw has most of the right qualities you want in a Captain. He is a star player (well becoming one), exciting and lively, marketable and is now developing a profile that will see his appeal move outside of just collingwood fans. His drawback is his onfield discipline. The guy gives away too many 50m penalties and free kicks for my liking. But he's young and I'm sure thats going to change.

I think Pendlebury could be a good captain in the future. Maybe five or so years down the track. I recall moments in the game against West Coast when he demanded players lead to vacant spots. He pointed and yelled at them where he wanted them to go. To me this says that he is a guy that will command, and he looks to be developing into a star player and with that comes marketability and profile. Thomas has yet to show much in the way of leadership but he's got time on his side to develop it.

I don't think Ben Johnson would not be given the captaincy based on his off-field antics because he puts a hell of a lot more work than most AFL footballers in hospital and some rehabilitation centre (helping people through physical rehabilitation). However his big downfall may be his media savvy.

Fraser isn't an inspiring player on the field, but looks like he is an inspiring person. He has the media savvy, and if anyone saw him order the troops against Richmond where he was the acting captain can tell he would know what to do, but still as a player he rarely commands the play, he has a huge influence when he is on, but he is more a part of the team than a leader by example. For example I don't see him ordering players to man up, ordering leads.

What I can see about the club's leadership development is that most of the youngsters aren't afraid of ordering other players around. From day 1 Maxwell and H.Shaw have been telling players to rotate oponents on the go and pick up loose men. Cox was even ordering someone to drop back into the hole during a stoppage. This is harder as a young midfielder to do as you are involved in the play more often and you have to be more focused on your own game but Pendlebury orders leads, and tells his mates what to watch out for in stoppages. Thomas is a bit more quiet but is more of a dynamic and inspirational player, so is probably a better fit for captain.

We of course taught Didak how to play football, and I would suggest that he is the best option. He is committed, hard at the ball, does the magical and will be around for a long time if his knee is good.
