I hope we win a flag because in a few years when Lenny, Max, King retire, and all our current guns are on the wrong end of 20 we'll have even less chance.

But I can see us staying in contention for at least a few more years. Not necessarilly in with a good chance to win though.

There is no reason why we can't go all the way next year but a lot of things will need to go right.

We will need to have a good run with injuries and our younger players will all need to improve and have an impact. A lot will also depend on whether we recruit Cousins and if he can still play to his previous high standards. If he can, then that will give our midfield a huge boost.

The real challenge will once again be beating Geelong and Hawthorn but at our best I think we can compete with them. It won't be easy but if you don't believe you can go all the way and win the flag then you may as well just give up now.

great post :thumbsu:

As much as i would love to think St.kilda could win the flag in 2009, they will most likely fall short. They could finish anywhere from #2 - #12. Very unpredicatable those Saints.

Suppose we have the preliminary team from 2008, but with an in form Baker instead of McQualter. Luke Ball instead of Robert Eddy. Ben Cousins instead of Fiora.

Now suppose that Kosi and Dal Santo string a few good games together at the right time.

It would need a fair bit of luck ( Do we have that at StKilda ), but not impossible.

in the next 3 years i think we might finally do it, how unlucky would harvs feel if we win it next year

I agree. When you put it like that we weren't far away but I suppose the problem is that despite the fourth finish there was a huge gap between the top two and rest of us. We didn't seem to have a terrible season injury wise either however even then in typical Saints fashion we lost some crucial players at the exact wrong time of the season.

To me the real x factor comes from the younger and middle tier players who make the transition from having potential to become elite footballers. You look at a team like Hawthorn where Brad Sewell who had been around for a while suddenly becomes one of the most important midfielders in the league. Let's hope we have one or two of those types who emerge.

Yeah It will be exciting next year to see if we get any surprises out of the likes of Gram, Clarke(s), Gilbert, and even Jones and McQualter.

Dal Santo could be great. I was reading the Robert Harvey method of breaking a tag last night, you just keep running at 1/2 to 3/4 pace until the opponent drops off. Dal is the opposite , he rests all the time. Time to do some jogging along Beach road Nick.

.... well most people thought hawthorn couldn't beat geelong in the GF but they did... so in that respect it's my belief all teams are beatable on the day. There's really no such thing as an invincible team, YES Gee and Hawks are very good of course, but more so the "aura" that develops around them. If we believe we can mix it with the best then we can.

Yes quite right, no team is unbeatable. Although realistically Geelong and Hawthorn will be the teams we need to beat next year if we want to go all the way. Neither of them will lose any significant players from this year so I can't see either of them dropping off much, in fact Hawthorn with all their young players will probably improve.

As I said before, for us to beat them a lot of things will need to go right for us or wrong for them. There are always a lot of unknowns going into a new season though like injuries, form, development of young players etc. If we have some luck with injuries, our young players develop into good players, we recruit Cousins and Geelong and/or Hawthorn drop off in form or have a few injuries, who knows what could happen.

As you say, not many people this time last year would have thought Hawthorn or anyone else could have beaten Geelong for the premiership this year.
