I dont think any of us will be alive if this record ever gets broken. Just waiting for a rookie to enter the NFL who could have a 15+ year career as a receiver/rb, let alone being a prolific td scorer.

What does a team captain even do???

From Wiki

Choice on Penalty Option(s) – The offended team captain has a choice of accepting a penalty enforcement or declining, except where said penalty is automatically "enforced by rule." In some circumstances, a team captain may elect to "decline" the penalty. This typically happens in a situation in which declining the penalty may mean that the next down should occur (3rd or 4th). A good example would be on an "offensive holding" enforcement, the defensive team might elect a "4th down and 5 yards to gain" v. a "3rd down and 15 yards to gain."
______

Doesn’t the coach handle that?
______

He does, but the captain has the power to relay his team's choice to the officials on the field. Rule 18, Section 1, Article 3 of the rulebook... http://static.nfl.com/static/content/public/image/rulebook/pdfs/21_Rule18_GuidelinesForCaptains.pdf ....also adds that "only one captain is permitted to indicate the team’s penalty option."

Back in the day, the captain was also the only *person* who could signal timeout. Yes, not even the coach could do it.

This rule led to some pretty weird situations. In a 1970 game between the Broncos and Chargers, with the score tied, Broncos captain Alan Pastrana was leading the offense downfield to try a game-winning field goal when he was knocked out cold by a Chargers linebacker with seconds to go. Since he was tackled in-bounds, the clock continued to run. Although his teammates tried to call a timeout, the refs didn't oblige as *only* Pastrana could do it, but since he was unconscious, the clock just ran out and the game ended in a tie.

In 1979, Washington was trailing Dallas. After completing a pass that got his team into FG range with one second left, Washington captain Joe Theismann tried to call a timeout but he was too late to inform the ref. Co-captain and tackle George Starke was too far from any of the officials to make his signal known, so the game ended with a loss. At the time, teams were also allowed to change captains at the two-minute warning and they often opted to designate someone like a WR as one as they would be downfield and thus closer to where the tackle took place, giving them more time to get their timeout to the refs.

Why not call themselves Washington Maroons? There are some who believe the Redskins franchise was born out of the Maroons franchise.

There is ALMOST a connection between the two teams. The Maroons moved and became the Boston Bulldogs. Because the Washington Football Team began in 1932 as the Boston Braves, some Pottsville backers, with help from a few writers, have suggested that the Redskins descended from the Maroons by way of the Boston Bulldogs. The 1932 Boston franchise, however, had no relationship to the 1929 Bulldogs (that team instead descended from the Tornadoes, by way of the 1931 Cleveland Indians.

The Bills logo in 1962 used to feature a depiction of a player wearing a #31 Bills jersey. For a long time in the organization, it was believed that #31 was “retired” or “not to be used on the field by real players.” So as a result, that jersey wasn’t issued to players for several years and kept as a reserve. However, there was no such team rule in actuality, it was just a random number.

Donovan McNabb puking in the Super Bowl. There's no actual footage of it happening.

There's footage of McNabb puking in a 2006 game against the Bucs, but not in the Super Bowl. The people who claimed he did are Terrell Owens, who recently said he wants to have an MMA fight with McNabb, Freddie Mitchell, who went to jail for cheating on his taxes and was a noted team gossip queen, but no actual proof of him puking in the Super Bowl

So hardly the type of guys that you should just "take their word for it"

-------

I absolutely saw him throwing up in a garbage can during the 4th Quarter. Now it's reached urban legend status, as no video exists.

Most people dont remember ...

Randy Moss played for the Titans, and also the Niners, was in that Super Bowl team that lost to the Ravens.

Or how about Terrell Owens playing for the Bengals, had a good year, 70 recs, 900 yards, 8 TDs. But when did he finish? On the Bills or Seahawks?

Or how about Wes Welker never won a SB...he lost two with the Pats and another on the 49ers as an assistant coach

Belichick press conference just yesterday, but he goes into the history/evolution of Special Teams, why there are specialists at LS, K, P, Gunner, Returner. Also follow up question, touches on Seattle 3 and how thats varied and individualized now, from coach to coach, like WCO.

A cautionary tale of bad journalism. A rising career completely ruined by it. And why since then, the distrust and disconnect between coaches/players and the media has grown, the medias all out interest in stirring the pot for a story, making outright false claims for higher ratings, etc.

Terry Bradshaw was the original TB12. What's funny is that, during his playing days, apparently Bradshaw once checked into a hospital under a fake name. That name was Tom Brady. Time is a flat circle.

The greatest single draft ever?

1974 Steelers. Four HOFers were drafted. 1st - Lynn Swann, 2nd - Jack Lambert, 4th - John Stallworth, 5th - Mike Webster. And....signed UDFA Donnie Shell after the draft, which makes it 5 HOFers. Amazing.

The next best closest efforts....

Only one other team's draft class produced 3 Hall of Famers, the 1958 Packers draft, Jim Taylor, Ray Nitschke, and Jerry Kramer.

I'd also at least throw out an honorable mention to the 1983 Bears draft class. Jimbo Colvert, Mike Richardson, Willie Gault, Dave Deurson, & Richard Dent is a nice haul.

Also....The Bucs in 1995 getting Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks both in the first round.

Also....The Ravens in 1996 getting Jonathan Ogden and Ray Lewis both in the 1st too.

In 1967 the Rams and Colts tied for the Costal Division with 11-1-2 records. They played a 24-24 tie in week 5. Then in week 14 the 11-0-2 Colts lost to the 10-1-2 Rams. Rams victory gave them the head to head tie breaker for the division. This was before the start of the wild card team era common today.
