Ruck? Hmm, I gotta start going to see sandy again. And no, he won't beat Jamar for a spot in our squad.

Ruck, can't see him getting a go ahead of Jamar.

And this is where our problem lies.
He is playing well, because finally he is being played in the ruck (PJ injured, Jamar playing AFL). A dud forward, with zero mobility, but a good tap ruckman.J

Good enough to break into our side ahead of Jamar or PJ? Hell no.
He didn't ruck last year when we were dying for a back-up, because there was too much competition to ruck at Sandy. Now, he is doing well but we don't need him. We need a KPP, always have. He can't play KP, therefore he is gawn.

I know this is his "appreciation" thread, but I think it should also be his farewell thread.

no chance hes gonna get a game, miller will come back in and hopefully dunn wont get ommitted coz of that. im hoping dunn will stay in let alone smith coming in...
but yes, we can dream

Do we know if we could have taken anyone better with his pick? Any good players to come after him in drafts? Should look into that...

I can tell you right now, there was better players taken after him in the draft.

There were better players than him not taken in the draft.

was dal santo in that draft?
I think dal was in the Judd draft, so we got the magnificent Molan in dal's year. I think Smith was pick 15.....so pretty much anyone who has played senior level has become better than Smith, although Smith has got 2-3 games under his belt.
Give him a go I say, I want to see him leading out of CHF, well, I would prefer Miller.....or Dunn, but give him a game Neale, he's just screaming out for one!

If memory serves me correctly, he was taken the year we traded Woewodin. We picked Bell and Smith, then also got Rivers with a pick in the 20's. Paul Johnson was taken after Smith in the early 20's by the Eagles too. I also think Byron Schammer was taken with the pick right before Bell, and I was :D:D:D:Ded off as I had hoped Freo would continue to do stupid things with picks and overlooked him. I think that's the same draft we got Ferguson and the best pick ever, Gary Moorcroft!

At least he is playing well. Constant injuries haven't helped, and that's hurt his mobility. But hey, if he keeps it up, things may fall his way.

We did well with Rivers. Bell looks like he'll be a player, Ferguson was basically free (pick 60+ I think) and Moorcroft... well.... f*%k that for a joke!

We needed KPP very badly in the drafts of 2001 and 2002. In 2001 we made a MASSIVE mistake with Molan, who was drafted due to his apperant aggression and the fact that he was a key position player. We should have gone for best available, and that wasted pick costs us dearly.

When you look back at our track record when trying to land KPPs, it's all bad. Molan, Smith, Breese, Ellis (trade), Holland (pick 20 FFS), Bizzell (at least we got rid of Grgic). At least we found some gems with Rivers and Miller. We also did well to rookie Carroll and finally Dunn for Jolly... now he looks like a player! :thumbsu:

You can add Lamb to that list, he was a first rounder in 99 I think. Holland hasn't been THAT bad, and Bizzell has been fantastic for us.

And also, how could we forget throwing Aaron Rogers in the "bad" list. He was the worst of the lot! To be fair to Molan, injuries didn't help him in the slightest.

2002 was an ordinary draft, but we managed to get a couple of decent players out of it.

Brendan Goddard still hasn't shown form to justify going at #1. Daniel Wells is a very good player at #2.

The next few haven't established themselves yet. Jared Brennan, Tim Walsh, Jarrad McVeigh, Steven Salopek, Andrew Mackie, Luke Brennan, Hamish McIntosh, Jason Laycock, Jason Winderlich and Jay Schulz is the order from pick #3 to pick #12.

Byron Schammer went at #13 and is a promising player. Then we took Daniel Bell and Nick Smith at #14 and #15.

After that, the only players to establish themselves are:

#19 Troy Selwood
#20 Will Minson
#26 Jared Rivers
#37 Brent Staker
#40 Jobe Watson
#45 Kade Simpson
#53 Adam Selwood
#55 Ryan Crowley
#56 Robert Shirley
#66 Ryan Ferguson
#72 Brad Fisher

Rookie - Mark Jamar
Rookie - Martin Mattner
Rookie - Jarad Rooke
Rookie - Ben Rutton
Rookie - Aaron Sandilands

The majority of those first few are talls, so they always seem to take a bit longer. Salopek is starting to come good finally, I really wish we'd managed to pick him up during trade week when his value wasn't great. Goddard is an absolute :D:D:D:D, I don't know how he went at 1. Goddard is unfortunate as he is in between sizes. Not big enough to be KPP, but he isn't mobile or fast enough to play midfield. He does have a superb kick though.
Looking at those later picks Crowley or Fisher would've been great, as well as any of those Rookies. Those rookie picks have turned out to be great.

Gees that's an impressive rookie list.

I wish we had picked up Rutten, he is a damn good defender!

true but you have to realise that different clubs have their eyes on different players, Melbourne might've been looking for a KP player with that pick, and there is only a slight chance that we wouldve gone with Polo, even though he has played a ripper debut game, there are many others who have impressed in game 1 and as soon as they get a bit of respect from their opponents they turn to :D:D:D:D
