Game rules. I started off just using a sword but found myself preferring to two hand an axe everywhere. I'm sure some bosses will force me to change that though. At first I thought the R1 for Ki was gimmicky but now that I've got the hang of it I can go for 3 heavy attacks, hit R1 and then quickly roll dodge away. It allows a little more aggressive play style than typical Souls.

Hurry up work day.

Goty. But no one will play it.
Actually it's sold out at Amazon and a lot of retailers (apparently). Obviously it won't do Uncharted numbers but it's selling better than Team Ninja expected. I started playing last night, chose the spear as my main as I always do in Souls games.

Beat the boss on the ship after 10 or more deaths lol, patience with him is definitely the key.

Glad to hear this is doing do well! Hadn't really been keeping an eye on this game, looks lovely and sounds like my cup of tea.

It's been a bumper start to the year for video games. Nowhere near enough time (or cash) to get everything I'm keen on.

Haven't played Souls but my issue with Bloodborne was that there was no motivation for me to push through the challenge. I don't mind that it's difficult but I want something to attach me to the game. Is there a more satisfying overarching narrative in this?

One shot first boss on ship. DS3 honed me well.

Only one I ever finished was DS3. Played the others but like you I didn't understand the masochism. Then for DS3 I changed my approach and instead relished the challenge and pushed for the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment each time you beat a boss, get through an area or even something as simple as opening a shortcut. I've always appreciated the games and have always wanted to like them, but it took a willingness to say that I'm going to see it through.

This game actually has a more obvious story though with narration so that is something to get you into it. Souls and Bloodborne had a story too but you could just skip it, dive in and commence the abuse. Where as already in Nioh I know who my character is, why he is there and why the world is like it is. This game does have some more forgiving qualities though like being able to loot health flasks instead of being able to only replenish them at a shrine. I'm only a few hours in and there is certainly plenty of time left to disappoint but so far it is fantastic and I'm going to put it at the very start of my early GotY list (granted it's the first 2017 game I think I've played lol) and it will be interesting to see how all the games over the next couple months compare with this still fresh in my mind.

I miss the connected worlds of Dark Souls, I think this design compares more to Demon Souls. With this design though it allows them to include the extra stuff like side missions, those twilight mission thingies and whatever else I see pop up on the map. I think it's a way for that bloke to tell the story too. It's definitely not as dark and obscure as Souls. It's not a bad thing but how you perceive that yourself is purely subjective.

So far I think this has some deeper systems than Souls. Just the little things like increasing weapon familiarity to unlock special abilities, reforging (rerolling a prefix) weapons and all the other stuff you can do at the blacksmith that I'm still working out, the ninja stuff that I am too still working out, among other things. My only concern is down the track is the chance of being overpowered or at the very least the game becoming easier with all the customisation and ways you can buff up. In Souls you had to do these things and min/max your character right just to get by, in this I'm worried it will make things easier. All the reviews state the opposite though which is reassuring. I'm sure most of the guys in here will get so far ahead of me so I'll be eager to know how everyone fares as the game progresses.

Boss difficulty seems to drop off a cliff around the half way point.... unless I got gud. Enemy variety is a bit thin but the combat is solid enough that it negates it getting stale.

That stun was fun right?

Haha the first time I jumped in she did it off the bat then wrecked me with a combo. After that I actually didn't get bothered by the stun since she gives a pretty obvious audio queue first. Initially it was the dash that was giving me grief until I learned to dodge into/through it.

Had a bit of a crack at this yesterday... enjoying so far although I'm still in the first area after the tutorial. I like that there is enough differences from the souls series to still be a bit fresh & that the story telling is much more pronounced.

does this end up being harder than souls though? if so I will never finish it. only played DS1 which I got maybe halfway through & I started DS3 but put it down & haven't gone back yet. I did finish bloodborne which I was pretty surprised about - thank god for phantoms helping with some bosses though :|

so keen to get this, just gotta figure out what to trade or sell for it.

It's worth selling your body for.

You'll be right. I'm pretty bad at Souls too but getting right into this one. The game is still just as brutal as Souls as times but there are plenty of things that make it a little more forgiving. Just little things like being able to find more flasks as loot drops, the living weapon buff, more buff/debuff items, deeper crafting system where you can upgrade your gear and reroll stats, and being able to return to completed story areas to take on side missions and farm for stuff. You can call in players to help you in this too. The second main boss (excluding intro guy) gave me a hard time that after I finally beat it I actually went back to give other players a chop out who needed it. Not only did I get to farm up Amrita but I was also getting loot drops.

Nioh has the right amount of niceties to suck you in and keep you going before it gives you an uppercut. Great balance though imo and I wouldn't be surprised if some of it turns the hardcore Souls guys off but for me it's one of the best things I've played in a long time.

The other day I was looking through the menus and found something that was like paragon levels in Diablo. I had a lone point and I can't even remember what I put it in. Now I can't even find that menu. Does anyone know what this was? It wasn't my skill/talent menu, the titles menu or the requests at the blacksmith. I can't remember anymore and have turned the menus upside down looking for it and I'm starting to think I'm going mad and was dreaming it.

Tried to pick this up today: sold out everywhere. EB and JB. One JB had a copy but it was a 90 minute drive. Amazing that word of mouth has given this a lot of hype (as well as the demo).

Clearly an undersupply, they should have known a Souls style game from the Ninja Gaiden team would sell like hotcakes.
