TRADTIONAL powerhouses Carlton and Collingwood have been awarded licences in the new AFL women’s league, along with Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs.

Foxfooty.com.au understands that while the Bulldogs and Demons have long been assumed as definite teams in the women’s league, there was fierce competition for the final two spots with the majority of Victorian clubs bidding.

The Blues and Magpies have beaten out Geelong, St Kilda, North Melbourne and Richmond for the final two Victorian licenses.

Collingwood had been widely assumed to win a license given the sheer size and reach of their club and supporter base.

Hawthorn and Essendon chose not to bid for women’s teams ahead of the inaugural 2017 season.

The AFL will make an official announcement from 11am this morning at the MCG.

Geelong and Richmond have missed out on inaugural AFL women's team licences, while Collingwood and Carlton are understood to be celebrating their successful bids in an eight-team competition.

The full composition of the AFL's landmark new women's competition – the identities and number of league teams from 13 submissions received nationally – will be unveiled at the MCG at 11am on Wednesday.

Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs are certainties to be included along with the Greater Western Sydney Giants, the Adelaide Crows and Brisbane Lions. It's understood Fremantle have edged the West Coast Eagles out of the race.

Fairfax Media has been told Geelong and Richmond were among the disappointed parties after clubs were officially informed earlier on Wednesday morning by the AFL.

AFL chairman Mike Fitzpatrick and CEO Gillon McLachlan is soon to make the formal announcement surrounded by half a dozen top female footballers.

To be fair it probably needed 1 or 2 big clubs to work. And with WB and Melb as the others it makes sense to be Collingwood and Carlton.

Would have been nice if it were us, but if it all works out a full competition wont be too far away.

No it didn't. This is a new league with new affiliated clubs that can forge their own identities.

It was obvious from a mile out that the AFL had already awarded these behind closed doors though. Shock.

Let Collingwood lose some more money. This may not even have any future, I suspect.
What makes you think that?

I think that the only real threat to it is for the governing body to f*** around with the rules too much.

I see your point, and 100% agree that it was quite obvious. Buy my point is Brisbane and GWS have been approved they cant even draw crowds to their games as it is. WB and Melb also wont be able to bring massive crowds, therefore for any chance that the competition has to succeed and grow would be getting a couple of big clubs in there to bring in sponsorship, crowds and so on. To be honest i cant see it succeeding, hope it does but just cant see it happening once all the hype dies down after a few months. But having collingwood in there, as much as we all hate them was a logical choice in my opinion.

I don't think there will ever be enough money or interest in it, to make anything serious out of this league.
It's a novelty and will get plenty of interest for a few weeks, but it will be like woman's cricket. It exists, but nobody really cares.
Same as women's soccer league, and that's despite Matildas being a medal chance in Rio. Still no real interest, money or crowds. None.

Reckon you're wrong, women's BBL ratings were big last year and close to 50% of AFL crowds are already women. It will never be as big as the men's game, but this will definitely have a good following. Really disappointing we're not a part of it from the start.

Really disappointing we're not a part of it from the start.

We weren't part of the first teams in the mens comp too.

It won't take long and we will be in there where we belong.

My first post in this thread which shouldn't be seen as me not supporting the girsl and their footy pursuits, just that we didn't have a snow flakes chance in hell of having a winning bid. Hope we didn't invest much time.

I don't buy this argument. Women supporters want to see a good game, and seeing women play is surely secondary. Do you find more women watching women's tennis, than men's tennis? No, people just want to watch top players play tennis, be they women or men.
Like I said, it doesn't really work for soccer, even though women's game has been around for a long time, and has international competitions going for it.
And if I am wrong, and it will take off like wildfire, we will join a few years later, once there are enough players to go around for extra teams.

You couldn't be more wrong. Womens footy is growing like crazy at the grass roots level, Female participants/supporters will slowly & steadily be driven towards those teams given the licenses.

This is a massive loss, even though it was a certain one.

Oh well, we have a provisional license for an expanded comp. What is new... fat cat clubs and their cronies at head office putting them ahead of the queue looking to take what we have been developing for themselves.

I'd definitely argue more young women watch women's sports because they are inspired to grow up and replicate them in elite competitions.

I'm not saying every woman who currently watched AFL will follow the women's league as passionately, but there will certainly be enough to make it successful from day one.

There is a big gap between grass roots, and successful league.
Once again, have a look at soccer. Massive participation at grassroots level, great national team (The Matildas), yet just 300 people attending national league matches.
