NMFC vs Swans at Narrandera - Friday night

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Is anyone going to make the trip up the Newell Highway to Narrandera to see North take on the Swans at 7pm next Friday?

I used to live about 200 metres from the Narrandera sports ground - it's a damned fine oval. I doubt I'll be making the 5 hour trip up though.

It is not too far from Wagga, a bit too far out for me though.

Absolutely no chance, due to the bolded bits :thumbsd: Time for our Riverina brethren to step up to the plate with the game reports.

The club will probably be running the chat thingy that they did today, was awesome although my crappy iphone kept losing signal.

Would appreciate a Narrandera cultural understanding thread for the education of the masses.

Sudan got one.

As a former resident of Narrandera I can confirm there is very little culture there.

Narrandera is a pretty little town on the Murrumbidgee River about 100kms West of Wagga. It's at the junction of the main Sydney-Adelaide (Sturt) and Melbourne-Brisbane (Newell) highways.

The name from Narrandera is from the local Wiradjuri language and means "place of the lizard".

The famous Australian book Robbery Under Arms was written by a Narrandera local under the pen name Rolf Boldrewood and a Catholic priest named Patrick Hartigan wrote bush poetry under the nom de plume John O'Brien - his most famous poem would be Said Hanrahan (We'll all be rooned said Hanrahan). There is an annual festival held in John O'Brien's honour.

The main industry is mixed agriculture.

Pubs that used to be OK were the Charles Sturt, Murrumbidgee and Narrandera Hotels - I don't know what they're like these days though.

Also beware of horrific country and western buskers in the main street or supermarket on Saturday mornings.

A home game! (at least only 120kms to travel). As far as country ovals go, Narrandera is as good as they come (far better than the bigger towns in our region like Wagga can produce) and is bloody big. I am officially very excited

I look forward to your match report then 'poker :thumbsu:

Does this mean you'll be giving us a game review afterwards??

geez I hope they've got enough water on the ground up there?? my concerns are what condition the grounds in ,let alone the location.... my memories of Narrandera being a barren place. Give the kids a run and those that will be in and out of the seniors all year.....pratty??

The ground is magnificent and will be fine - don't worry about drainage in the wet it's very sandy and drains well and the surface is top notch. It's one of the best football grounds outside Melbourne.

Thanks for the travel brochure BS. To me Narranderra is always a good spot for a counter lunch on the way to Lightning Ridge.
Thanks also for the reminder about Said Hanrahan.
Could be an appropriate nom de post for many of our fellow travellers.

It could indeed but I doubt too many of our fellow travellers who constantly lambast our club and players would know the poem though.

This is gold(rush) Jerry, gold.

Anywhere that associates with lizards is alright.

Wonder why JOBby gets a festival but not Bolddywood? One of the great unanswered questions.

Can't wait until Lavington gets its upgraded lighting, then we'll be getting some of these games instead of Narrandera. And not quite as far for you city folk to travel.

I'll be there with kids in tow - haven't seen a North practice game since we played Richmond at Skinner Reserve in '95 and have only stopped at Narrandera once or twice on the way from/to Queensland, so the whole thing will be a big adventure. Only thing I know about the town is that it's right on the shared RL/footy frontier and not long ago fielded a RL team entirely made up of Pacific Islanders who won the club a premiership and then all promptly departed.
