News No complacency for White

Although he set the bar high with a five-goal performance on debut for Collingwood, Jesse White is not about to get comfortable.

He knows each audition to play the supporting role to the Magpies' star forward Travis Cloke is equally important at this time of the season.

That's because Quinten Lynch – who lost form in the second half of 2013 – is breathing down his neck while Magpies coach Nathan Buckley has said he sees All Australian defender Ben Reid playing forward more often this year after a couple of successful cameos last season.

"(There is a) bit of pressure there for spots. When guys like that are playing well you always feel like you are on the toes," White said while attending Collingwood's community camp in Kinglake.

Great to hear that White has his Head on Right

Good no one should be a walk up start in the Collingwood army of 22.

Whilst that's the "successful" mentality, the reality is there are always going to be walk up stars in every side because they are simply champions.

Of course, i don't expect Swan, Beams, Pendlebury, Ball, Cloke etc. to play reserves.

White cemented his spot in the team even before the 5 goal game against the cats.

He probably secured it when we made the trade but if he starts playing bad footy i expect no less than a short thrip to the VFL.

The thing from that article which worries me is the hint that we still view a two tall structure as a viable option. If we think we can get away with playing Cloke and White as the only two tall forwards (with White pushing up into the ruck), then we will accomplish as much as we did when we played Cloke and Lynch as the two big targets - precious little.

If there is one thing that the playing of Reid forward taught us (and I prefer him down back, incidentally), it's that the three tall forwards structure works. Deploying a two KPF structure (one of whom relieves in the ruck) would make me seriously doubt that Buckley has learnt anything from his first two years and would not inspire any confidence that he is up to it as a coach.

I change my mind on this all the time but now i want Reid in the backline Keeffe taking Maxwell's third defender spot and Witts being the second ruckman third key forward

Complacency is the reason White was in and out of the swans for so many years, he had the ability but never applied himself to that high level.

Hopefully he is doing that now, with his height pace and power he is a formidable opponent if he gets up and about

White was recruited to play this role, Lynch is in the twilight of his career and must surely now be seen as back-up: he started well last year and then the old body started to catch up with him and he was only just hobbling by season's end.
The job is White's to retain or lose and of course we all want him to do really well and make it his own. Potential has always been his strong point, consistency his weakness, he had easily his best and most consistent year in 2013 and here's hoping he has matured and arrived at the peak of his always promising powers.

I am glad to hear that White has given up complacency.
Yes but has it given up White?

Sounds silly I know but its an insidious thing, I've had drivers working for me that swear they are flat out - and to their way of thinking are. One day in the passenger seat with me driving usually straightens them out - or sees them seeking a career change ;)

I guess it will be Bucks in the passenger seat...

Need Goldsack up there. Reid should only go forward if there is a crisis as we need him up back

Fully agree with you that Reid is needed down back, but I don't think Goldsack is the answer.
