Pets Non cat lovers getting a cat

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

We don't have any pets except a couple of fish & all the wildlife outside.

Wife & I aren't cat lovers, but the little 9 & 6 yo are desperate for a pet & have massively fallen in love with one specific kitten of a friend's cat's litter, which they'll give us if we decide we want it.

Any of you non cat lovers out there, had a cat move in? I've had dogs when I was younger, so cleaning & care isn't an issue but just throwing it out there to gauge other's experiences.

If the kitten has 'grown up' with it's mother, then if you can replicate the circumstance (litter/no litter, soft bed/tile, outside at night/inside at night, outside at day/inside at day, etc) then you shouldn't have any problem, as they are very self-sufficient.

Just be prepared for a life of servitude. And occassional threats on your life.

Buy a dog, a cat will drain your life, and unless you keep it inside all the time you will only be a bed and breakfast for an ungrateful knut, who wont want anything to do with your kids.

Plus eventually you will have to tell your kids why your cat wont be coming back as you will almost certainly run it over on your way to work one day!

I hear Lhasa Apso's are good with kids

Cats are the spawn of the devil

Maybe true but they do make for funny gifs and memes.

Check your local council regs. Some have specific rules about cats being outdoors to protect native wildlife.

Personally I think dogs are better for kids.

Cats are the skidmark of household animals. Better off going down to the local prison and picking up a recent inmate. It will be more loyal and loving, and its less likely to run away/claw your eyes out.

Get a Pugalier dog. Its a pug, crossed with a cavalier. Two sad looking dogs, mixed into one, to create the ultimate sad looking dog. I saw some pugalier pupies yesterday, and if you have little kids, they will think they are the cutest thing in the world. I dont know how, they have freaky squished up faces, but they will.

Don't let Cat Haters get in the way of you getting a nice kitty! I to used to be a cat hater until one day my parents came home with a kitten. Sure some cats can be ferals (my friends cat is the devil i swear), but the kitten i adopted is one of the nicest warmest creaters i have ever known. I do still prefer dogs ( our place has no fence so i can't have one). But this one little cat has completely changed my opinoin on the creatures. (also apparently cats are meant to be smarter than most if not all dogs.)

Staffy's are the worst dog ever, so no, im not mad :D You do alright with the border collie though. Cant go wrong with a border collie.

I dont have one of those stupid pugalier's btw. I suggested since little kids would love them.
I have a fox terrier x with heaps of other shit. She is awesome.

l was never really a cat person but l don't mind cats now we have 2 cats dexter and betty, dexter is a great hunter always brings in lizards etc.cats are very independent they do what, they want when they want.when they want a pat/cuddle they come to you.l like my dogs more(chocy labs) they are always happy to see me.l am not sure if a cat is best for young kids wanting to pet it all the time chase it around a med size dog might be best. or get a puppy and a kitten.

Dogs are much better

My dog is a mixture of i dont know how many breeds but came out pretty damn good, calm temprement. Doesnt do anything anymore, is 15 and a half, but has been pretty good. Border Collies are the best dogs, love one of my cousins dogs.

But if you are getting a dog go adopt one from the RSPCA/animal shelter, much better way to go about it.

Depends what you're after. The best thing about a cat is you can choose your level of involvement. If you want to get involved, it'll love you and come for pats and junk- if you want to leave that to the rest of your family- the cat will love them instead.

With a dog, you'll get it running up to you and loving you and following you around- whether you want it to or not.

If you're after "unconditional love"- you can probably get a robot that's just excited to see you when you get home these days...

Great responses thanks. I had to re-read my OP to check what I'd written.

Pet possum?

I'm out in the foothills so this morning there was a baby bunny outside, every night the possums run amok, there was a few blue tongues living out the back door, Rosellas, cockatoos ... etc ;)

Put it this way-
If you are dying your dog will go for help and the cat will wait you out and then try to eat you.
