On umpires, of course the standard has dropped

We now have 4 umpires with their own interpretation of the rules and their own personal biases taking it in turn as the controlling umpire, or just butting in occasionally when they think it's necessary, instead of 3 umpires we had previously

Mathematically of course the standard will suffer

The problem with adding more umpires is that if any one of them pays the free, then it stands. So you only need one of them to make a mistake, and even if the other umpires can see that it shouldn't have been a free, the decision ends up standing (except in the super rare case when they decide it doesn't).

Adding in more umpires would make sense if decisions were a majority vote, but of course they're not and can't really be without massively disrupting the game.

He didn't seriously say that, did he?
How about the next decision, after a hearty round of boos dingus?

Even ignoring your very correct response, just on it's own terms it's a dumb comment. We would see a dozen decisions per match where the whistle is blown long after the crowd starts screaming for a free kick. Almost every single HTB decision or insufficient intent decision going in the favour of the crowd is preceded by a loud roar.

Just an idiotic statement to make.

I don't agree with just a fine for the ball to the face, I wasn't like he threw the ball at him he was still holding the ball when he struck him, if the ball isn't in his hand he slaps him in the face.
It's the same as striking. It generated more force by holding on to the ball.

AFL should've come over the top of Richmond and given Balta a few more weeks, don't think the judge was overly impressed with how the AFL handled it.

They came over the top of GWS and gave the guy 4 weeks for dressing us as an NFL player and simulated a consensual sex act.

AFL - simulating a consensual sex act deserves the same number of weeks off as a guy who assaults someone in the street, seems about right for them. The most amateurly run competition in the world.

He should have got a week. Becoming an angry little man. Looking forward to the Cats v Dogs game.

It also just dilutes the decision making power - which actually makes it harder for each individual umpire to make a decision. AFL is a hard game to umpire and paradoxically much more difficult when that power is spread amongst more people. Empowering stronger personal ownership of each game with 3 or even 2 field umpires is likely to improve that decision making in real time, at the expense of the umpires being less close to the action and less "informed" about the true state of any one contest.

The AFL is weak as piss.

Should just ban him for the 3 months of his sentencing conditions.

Not like it will impact on Richmond's finals chances.

Ps. Even ex teammate Riewoldt has said he should not be playing.

Many of the commentators re trying to play this down by describing it as throwing the ball at Impey! It was nothing of the sort. His hand was on the ball as it hit Impey's face.
Yep,
I'm pretty certain the hit would have left me on the ground.
There was no delay in Impey going down.
He didn't throw the ball, he hit him.
Yes the ball would have softened it compared to a roundhouse fist, but an intentional hit to the side of the head of an unsuspecting player is a dog act.

there's just no reason he shouldn't have got a week based on the matrix.

I don't understand the JUH thing. Why don't the Dogs just terminate his contract? He is not honouring his side of it, behaving badly while laughing and pocketing their money. He is bringing the game into disrepute, is he not?

They either can't, or they don't want another club getting him for free
