We were expecting it, Nicks confirmed so in his presser
Actions speak louder than words. We may have been expecting it, but we certainly weren't prepared/ready/able to deal with it. That failure is on Nicks.
A good coach should have got the players up to expect the hit or at least slow down and control the play so we remain in the game. Which to an extent we did in the second quarter before Nicks lost the plot and forgot to coach.
As I said... we probably should have been ready for it - we weren't.

As I see it, there are 3 main reasons why we lost last week:
  • Failure to match Freo's intensity in the 1st Q, when they came out breathing fire after their Melbourne humiliation.
  • Complete inability to kick the ball between the big sticks when taking set shots, not to mention ANB getting run down while attempting to run into an open goal (which was simply embarrassing).
  • Freo kicking 2 goals in the last minute of the 1st Q, and 2 goals in the last 2 min of the 3rd Q.
The 1st and 3rd of these are Nicks' failures. We really should have been better prepared, knowing in advance that Freo were going to be at maximum in Q1. We should also have plans & structures in place to prevent teams from scoring against us deep in "red time", let alone doing it repeatedly.

The 2nd isn't really his fault - there really isn't much he can do when Thilthorpe & (BF board luvvie) Nankervis repeatedly shoot themselves in the foot, rather than using their feet to kick goals.

Nah we weren't expecting it, Nicks just lied at his presser.

But at least when you lie in that way, you remove it as an excuse. So it's still a failure on Nicks

Yeah... I'm not sure which is worse. Not expecting Freo to come out breathing fire, after being humiliated by Melbourne, and thus failing to plan for their abnormally high intensity... or knowing that they'd come out breathing fire and still failing to come up with a workable plan for dealing with it. Either way, it's a spectacular coaching failure.

Aside from St Kilda, Essendon and the first half against Geelong we have looked pretty flat which has been a worrying trend. So im not fully shocked Fremantle caught us napping. This trend is entirely on the coaches. We have a full list to choose from minus a few players, competition for spots is truly on and yet we are sluggish. To be honest, this could be a real sign the players are not playing for Nicks. We have no gears.

Its pretty damning and only continues to highlight Nicks Plan A only coaching style. Combined with sluggish playing style I think we have issues.

I don't know the stats,
but could the players be becoming so pampered & the umpiring so poor this year that teams are almost unable to win away from home?
I don't know how else you could explain Freos jekyll & hyde job tonight.
And similarly ours last weekend.

Lachie Gollant finally over his injury saddling up for the Seagulls in the VFL saturday.
Scratch that, missed that he actually resumed last week for Williamstown VFL vs Werribee, kicked 4.1 from 9 disposals and apparently now has multiple AFL clubs monitoring him for the MSD.
