Actions speak louder than words. We may have been expecting it, but we certainly weren't prepared/ready/able to deal with it. That failure is on Nicks. We were expecting it, Nicks confirmed so in his presser
As I said... we probably should have been ready for it - we weren't.A good coach should have got the players up to expect the hit or at least slow down and control the play so we remain in the game. Which to an extent we did in the second quarter before Nicks lost the plot and forgot to coach.
As I see it, there are 3 main reasons why we lost last week:
- Failure to match Freo's intensity in the 1st Q, when they came out breathing fire after their Melbourne humiliation.
- Complete inability to kick the ball between the big sticks when taking set shots, not to mention ANB getting run down while attempting to run into an open goal (which was simply embarrassing).
- Freo kicking 2 goals in the last minute of the 1st Q, and 2 goals in the last 2 min of the 3rd Q.
The 2nd isn't really his fault - there really isn't much he can do when Thilthorpe & (BF board luvvie) Nankervis repeatedly shoot themselves in the foot, rather than using their feet to kick goals.
