Not going to pretend I have a solution for everyone but it might help the noise if Academys etc cant be bid on or chosen in the 1st round

ie everyone has a clean selection in their listed finishing order in the 1st round

Again I know its not the best and how it affects points and all but ehh
So like it was a couple of years ago until Hardwick was appointed GC coach and the AFL changed the rules around that and the 20% of senior coach salary being of the cap...hmm..

Under a system where you can only a match a bid with up to two picks, Gold Coast would have been unable to match most bids

They traded out 7 and 8, and went to the draft with 15 and 18. 15 and 18 are not enough to match a bid at pick 2, so they'd have to trade up (pick 18 would need to become at least pick 11). They would have been able to match the bid for Patterson at 5.

If they had traded up to get Uwland, after that they had pick 24 and 28 to match Patterson. Nowhere near enough for the bid. They would have had to trade up pick 24 into at least pick 12 to match.

29 and 36 would have been enough for Murray, but not enough for Addinsall as well.

So under the two pick system, Gold Coast would have had to pay a kings ransom to trade up to a top end pick to match Patterson, and ultimately would have ended up with (probably) only 2 of the 4 Academy players.

The 2 pick system should make it much fairer & likely mean more of these players will end up being available to other teams where matching becomes too difficult.

It's true, gotta limit it to one player in the first round either NGA Academy or Father Son, this compromised draft where there are 28 picks in the first round is utter bullshit

I think that's even generous. I think you should get the ability to match a bid just once a draft. That solves the entire problem. But doing it 4 times in the first round was utterly embarrassing for the AFL.

Saw Brisbane took Curtin. He wasn't even expected to go by my research in the top 50 at all, maybe was struggling to even get drafted. That was the assessment anyway. So could this be a sideways play by Brisbane to try and lure Dan to the Lions under the PR by his brother of his desire to play at the Crows with Dan. Just appears interesting timing they took him just before the crows pick. The Crows selection of ludowyke was rated much higher and expected to go in the first round or near the first round. So Brisbane's selection almost smacks of a desperate idiotic attempt to get back at us for Ah Chee. i suspect we probably weren't even going to take Curtin if he was available. Due to ludowyke availability. There was no noise of interest in us in Curtin.

They may genuinely think they can turn Cody into the next Harris Andrews or at the very least a Serviceable Key defender
