And going by comments from those that knew him, they thought he was great too.

Really interesting watching someone talk down someone as not a good bloke when you’re a sh*t bloke yourself.
It's interesting because if you compare to what many say about Bradman (who also got a state funeral) - many though he was a nasty piece of work.

Warne's was very loyal to his friends & family... & put plenty of his time back into cricket, including any young spinner he came across.

His main character flaw (which he openly admitted) is he was a womaniser... but is that a reason to not give him a State funeral? No DV or other troubles with the law like some other high profile sportsman.

He was loved my much of the population & many in Victoria would like an opportunity to say farewell & thanks for the great memories.

Bob Hawke got a State Funeral....

Depends on how you measure a great person. I thought he was pretty great, myself.

I guess we all have different standards. Those who thought he was great like yourself can pay their respects.

Coming from Taylor walkers No1 fanboy?

Far out. I just expressed that I didn’t think he should get a state funeral. A bit of further reading would show you I’m actually not a fan of state funerals - for anyone. Let the family grieve in private. Even further reading would show you I admire Warnie and believe he’s one of the best. I think his death is tragic. We also lost a good friend at 52 to a sudden heart attack. I’m not being a sh*t person or an arseh*le. It’s just an opinion. Faith, on the other hand.

You are refusing to acknowledge the influence and inspiration a person can provide, yes even through sporting achievements, simply because it didn't have that effect on you personally. And apparently you think your opinion is so important that you need to re-state it over and over in this thread. We get it, you're a wet blanket.

they offered one to Sir Donald Bradman but the family declined the offer.
I can understand that. The thing that strikes me about state funerals is the lack of privacy for the family, and the way politicians and other people who didn't even know the deceased get to speak at the same podium as the son/daughter/spouse etc. I saw a state funeral a while back - don't recall who - and the State Premier (don't recall which one) was speaking, and the family were sitting in the front row, and I just thought - if that had been my Dad, you're not getting near his funeral, mate.

Of course I understand that the kind of person who gets offered a state funeral is, to some extent, "public property", but that's what memorial services are for. But of course it's the family's decision.

Thank you for that. I guess my original comment that has everyone’s knickers twisted was more about the fact that ”ordinary” Australians AREN’T often recognised with this, rather sporting ”heroes/legends” or personalities. There’s a lot of ordinary people who achieve great things and never get this recognition. Our prioritising sporting heroes and tv personalities is, to me, a reflection of the many things wrong with our world. But I concede that I was wrong about him not being worthy. Clearly, to many, he is.
Just to let you know there are More State Funerals/Memorial than most understand, it's Just the sporting ”heroes/legends” or personalities, get air time, most of the other state funerals do not attach headlines. unless you happen to know the person.
If I ask how can you mention in the last 2 years most would say 2 or 3, And they would be Wrong.
A lot of People who received AO and OAM get state Funerals

I know it is about the cricket, but it does bring up a [point that has annoyed me forever.
How many times do we need to blow a siren before an AFL game starts?

Surely you blow the siren to start the game and that's it. Do we need one when the umpires come out? A 5 minute warning? A 3 minute warning? A 2 minute warning? It just seems to be blown over and over again for no real reason.

I doubt they're sounding it for no reason. Those that need to know will know what they mean.

It is so you know how much time you got to get to your seat.

Getting some luck throughout the year in terms of timing of opposition outs helps a lot.

Brayden Maynard looks like missing our round 2 clash through suspension, almost has me tipping us to make the 8.
