This seems a bit of a strange complaint to me tbh. Could really say the exact same thing for 8th and 9th under the current years system. Might be separated by % but 9th misses out entirely.

If you finish 7th you dont really get the right to complain imo
Well, in 2000 if you finished 7th out of 16 teams you immediately got to play the 6th place team. Now when you finish 7th out of 18, soon to be 19 teams (so you’ve finished higher than a greater percentage of clubs) you have to win an extra match before playing the 6th place team. So yeah, it is definitely screwing over 7th and 8th relative to the finals system of the past 25 years.

On a lighter note,

My view - If you finish below 6th in an 18 team comp, you're lucky to be in with a chance to begin with. Cop it and move on.

Reads a bunch of feedback from previous changes saying AFL is only looking at a cash grab. Belittles that overall position.
Then proceeds to say the AFL are giving us more of what we want... footy with consequence that will likely get mass viewership and attendance...
If you are doing a cash grab, and denying that's all it is. There's nothing quite like using the cash it generates to signify its success so that those who think it's only a cash grab are wrong :drunk:
Exactly Gerrard...why are people so cynical about the AFL's motivations? And how do they go about changing that perception of every change they make?

The best those for it can come up with is People will go and people will watch it on tv.What an argument that people will go watch their team play a game of football and it’s an extra two games.
If that’s the motivation get rid of the pre finals bye and play a normal round

Everything I feel about this announcement has already been said. What a diabolical year for the league and it's fans. Rugby League and whatever soccer Australia is called right now but be high-fiving each other watching this absolute train-wreck slowly occur.

The only saving grace from this will be the hilarity of watching 7th or 8th lose their spot in the finals to 9th or 10th, and really only if it's Freo.
Don't you worry, the soccer governing bodies in Australia are probably too busy creating their own train wrecks.

What annoys me is the sheer amount of clear public feedback in the form of social media opinion and fan surveys that clearly says the fans do not want Opening Round or Wildcard Round and yet Dillon wheels out his “we think it’s what the fans want” line

Their stock standard response when questioned about the state of the game since Demetriou was running it has always been: "numbers are up", and they truly believe this is a good enough reason to justify anything they do. They're money hungry c*nts ruining the game for $.

The more interesting number would be how many people actually watch more than 1 game a week?
I know I only watch our games now days. I'll throw the Thursday/Friday night games on the TV, but I'm not sitting through the whole game. It's background noise while I do other things.

People talk about the league as if it’s run by Scrooge McDuck and their sole motivation is to get more gold that he can swim around in his vault. In reality, the players, coaches and other stakeholders get a significant share of the league’s revenues so they are probably just as on board with adding extra finals matches.

I also think the idea that the league is purely motivated by profits is rubbish, given that they support things like indigenous academies and AFLW which are definite money-losers.

We can all lament the start of Bo Allan's career so far, but at least it's started smoother than pick 7 Josh Smillie. Didn't play a senior game last year, struggled with injuries and now.

Similar with Jagga Smith, the one we ostensibly gave up with our pick downgrade to get Liam Baker.

Still a long way to go but Bo Allan is winning by default at the moment.

I watch our games + finals. Sometimes I watch the best match up of the week as we get deeper into the season.

Wildcard round I’ll be skipping next season.

Bo also got to lay one on that grub Viney in his first game, which was a huge tick for me.

The AFL sure like to make things more complicated than they need to be.

Rule changes to fix problems with previous rule changes
F/S and Academy rules and points matching
Free agency rules and compensation picks
Splitting the draft over 2 nights
23 round season with 18 teams

All of these issues create totally unnecessary complexity, that the average fan doesn't like or even understand.

We also like to bolt on bits and pieces from US sports which ends up creating more problems, as we don’t include all the checks and balances that are present in the US leagues.

I can only assume the reason the AFL do this is money and to create more media content / interest.

Anyway, I’m just a middle aged man yelling at clouds..
