Sydney academy selections

2014 - Heeney (pick 18). Swans made the GF and Heeney was rated a top 5 player in the draft
2015 - Mills (pick 3 matched using 33,36,37,44)
2018 - Blakey (pick 10 matched but not sure with what picks)
2020 - Campbell (pick 5 matched after they’d used 4 on McDonald)
2020 - Gulden (pick 32 matched)

They’ve got 4 additional top 10 caliber players through the academy without having to use a single top 10 pick to draft them

That’s quite a leg up for a club that has been a consistent finalist since the early 2000’s
Tom Mitchell with pick 21 in the 2011 afl draft when he was a top 10 pick pre draft then traded to hawks for pick 14 after he struggled to get meaningful game time .

This pick 14 was then part of a trade that netted them picks for Florent and Haywood

Pretty wet in Perth today . Doesn't bode well for the purples .

Doggies a good scrappy wet weather team

Swans Academy has clearly helped them, but suggesting their success is purely based off that, and not also off the fact they've absolutely nailed their drafting and recruiting is very unfair.
If we had been able to draft 4 extra top 10 players over the last 10 years with spare change selections (and were stillin the finals), I'm pretty sure we'd also been seen to have a list of strong role players performing. Guys like: Cole, Cripps, Waterman, Jermaine Jones, Rioli all looked pretty good when we were up and about and all cost peanuts.

The academy is a massive rort. Its astounding that the AFL is too lazy to run them themselves and close the loophole.

The AFL is probably too lazy to do it, but i'm almost certain they have been happy with the loophole.

I could say with 5 times the resources, they are still in the finals while we lost to the wooden spoon team. Live in the moment - you start to sound like a carlton supporter with their 19 (VFL) Premierships.

Given the salary cap etc you could say they've had more resources thanks to COLA and their Academy.

you realise COLA ended 8 years ago. Lucky COVID didnt get to Sydney as well like it diod to Perth. Kids pay their own way to participate in the Swans Academy (there's a hint it makes money) - its open to all. Eagles can run academies to identify kids - HM rookie picks and low picks are on the Swans list? A hell of a lot - identify tallent!!

Lazy Eagles look to be community supporters etc, etc. But they are good at generating excuses. Swans only look to be good at footy.

The QF is not on FTA today???

Negroid please :poo:

Herald Sun reporting Petracca has a fractured leg but will keep playing.

That's a huge blow.
Not going to lie, feeling a little bit of schadenfreude after it happened from him pulling the same move that he did on McGovern earlier in the year, where he got a free for it then shooshed the crowd.

Tom Mitchell was a father/son selection rather than an academy pick so I left him out

I’m no doctor but playing with a hairline fracture in your leg is risky I’d have thought. Just look at Fyfe in the 2015 finals playing through and then managed only 5 games the following year in part due to complications from his leg injury

We take the piss out of Freo a lot, but I think they deserve some congratulations today on becoming only the 8th AFL team to play a final at Optus Stadium

I wonder whether Hipwood will get suspended for sling tackling Daniel Rioli’s head into the ground. A free kick was paid.
Tim Kelly got a week for something less but I don’t expect Hipwood to get suspended.
He might have been if Brisbane had lost. The AFL/VFL, you can’t beat them can you?
Yep
Low impact for Hippy.
So a fine only.

No mention of the potential to cause injury.
Nothing to see here.

Not sure if you're suggesting anyone can go to Swans Academy if they pay, but you have to get selected and it's $450 per year. They're trying to identify athletic gifted kids and indoctrinate them into AFL rather than the rugby codes and soccer.
