I agree, and yet my feeling is that there have also been a greater than usual number of pantsings in supposedly-competitive matchups.

Some interesting things to eyeball out of that.

How freaking unpredictable is the final 8 now!? I'm looking at the Hawks and thinking they could lose 5 or win 6! If there continues to be upsets then it will play havoc with the top four in particular, because those teams are also playing quite a few games against one another. There seems to be a very high chance that if any team currently in the 8 wins all, or almost all their final games this season then they will end up near the top. Even Sydney need to watch themselves! If they go down to the Hawks next week then they will be that much more vulnerable to us the week after, then they have Port the next week. And they would have to be the one team that you usually would think would be clear of any danger. All up it's a total lottery!

Did a little self ladder predictor at lunch today. Total disappointment if Sydney and Hawthorn met in an SCG prelim as I predicted on the current ladder positions.

If Carlton hires Trigg as CEO - I will stop supporting the Club. Simple as that.

I really thought we were the worst run club lately, Carlton have trumped us.

Well played Blues

Ive also done a few ladder predictors, and for some reason I always have Collingwood missing out on finals if they even drop one game for the rest of the year.

ie if they win every game they are in. lose one game and win the rest, they are out.

Any player that re-invents a position to change how it is played is in a class of their own.. Cox is one of those.

A midfielder in a ruckman's body.. A core reason the WCE were there abouts for most of his career and a true champion on and off the field.

Some of his early games were incredible.. 25 touches, 12 marks and 2 goals.. all while dominating the ruck taps and playing 80% match time.. and when he first arrived, rucks still were called 'lumbering' and expect to do the tap work and not much else other than guard the goal line!!

Is it just me or are we losing a lot of big champions this year..

No more than other years. They have to retire someday and Cox was on his last legs. Hope he gets a farewell game though!

Yeah.. I guess so..

Cox and Hayes were in my list of 'fave non-EFC' players.. maybe that is it.. and both were imho.. old school champions.. truly great on and off the field.

Loved Cox before the last few years where he started playing for frees. I guess that occurs when your body is coming to the end of your career. Hayes I agree. However is there any other ones? 2 hardly makes it a mass retirement year!

No probably not.. but starting to think it might be the end for Fletch.. I hope he stays though... 400 would be fitting..

I'm just getting that feeling.. also think Judd might call it a day..

Can't see Judd retiring, Carlton can't afford him to retire! Fletch, well as I said in the game thread whilst he deserves to go out on his own terms, there is a limit and the club should be upfront with that. Have a feeling next year will be his last.

Some will disagree, but Maxwell, Glass and Cassisi retiring is pretty big. All were captains, Maxwell a premiership captain. Jonathan Brown also a big retirement. Scotland retired this season too, as did Rutten.

Also, Tom Williams retired

Of those who could call it this year, there are some pretty big names; Judd, Fletcher, McPharlin, Hale, Cornes, Newman, O'Keefe, Goodes and Cooney could all retire this year IMO.

Forgot Brown but even so 3 is not that out of this world surprising, Maxwell is decent but no different to another captain retiring.

I don't think you're giving due respect to Glass or Rutten. Both champion full backs but such is the way of a full back that they don't get the kudos outside of their respective clubs that they probably deserve.

And to prove that point many in AFL circles still use the old 'well, Fletcher can't be considered one of the genuine greats because he didn't take the best forward every week.'

Is that because people only remember the last 10 years of his career? I reckon he did a decent job of playing traditional full back for the first decade of his career.

It's like saying Scarlett was no good for the same reason. His role evolved like Fletchers where he became the zoning defender as he was so bloody good at it. Absolute shit, both should be remembered as great defenders of their era (or in the case of Fletcher, many eras).
