I worry about the future of the WA clubs in 5 or 10 years,as they can't get trades done or attract free agents. They will need to get their drafting and development spot on.

Western Bulldogs have more Bendigo Bombers on their list than the bendigo bombers do.

Dickson, Campbell, Crameri, Biggs.

Even the sooky-la-la I wanna go home factor hasn't worked for them this year.

OH WELL

Wonder how competitive the Bulldogs will be next year.

They'll look back on Griffen's decision and thank him for shining the spotlight on McCartney. A second year with an exodus like the one they had in 2014 would gut the club and set it back 5-7 years (which, all of the vitriol directed at Griffen aside is the real reason they moved the coach on).

Would not have thought that there have been many occasions when a team has lost the equivalent of Griffen, Cooney, Higgins, Jones and Tutt in the one hit. That is one hell of a chunk of players for a team that should be on the rise to be losing. Griffen, Cooney and Higgins represent that middle aged core that is now basically gone. Jones should have been the support that Boyd now wont have.

Life just got a whole lot harder for Macrae and Libba as they are midfielders 1 and 2 now (at least from the perspective of the oppositions' run with players).

I'd be surprised if Jones did not kick on from here and play 150 games for Carlton. Malthouse's style will suit his game perfectly. All he'll need to do is lead where he is told to and there will be space for him to run and jump at the ball (which will actually be there for him to take instead of crabbing its way from half back) and very few defenders will be able to go with him.

Tutt I know less of but he's got speed and kicks goals which are not qualities I would have expected the Dogs to want to discard. He's basically committed to Carlton which wants him so there must be something there. He'll get a role that takes advantage of his attributes and he'll probably forge a career.

Throw in Jaksch and Whiley (who they'll look to to have a similar impact to Miles at Richmond) and Carlton has, in the last two preseasons gone, quite a long way to re-building that younger core of experienced players (22 to 24 yo) that they've not drafted to any real effect in the last 6 years.

Most of the dead wood has now been removed from their list. They've settled their spine in the immediate future and have three of four guys who still have long careers ahead on them filling the key posts. If Cripps and Kreuzer get fit and Casboult spends the summer reworking his kicking action their best 22 will actually be quite good and well balanced. Still need to pick the eyes out of two or three drafts and get development right before their depth will be decent but if I was a Carlton supporter I'd be happy with what they've done in the last two trade periods because there have been times in the last 18 months that they've looked like wooden spoon material.

**** Carlton!

dunno, picking up effective rejects from poor teams is hardly a recipe for success. I can say none of who they have picked up this year have impressed at all - and Ive seen them all. Jaksch may be ok longer-term, but thus far and especially against us has looked a bit of a fish out of water.

It is very hard to fast-track getting quality kids in. Quality is the key, but more so these days as you can top up with certain list deficiencies through free agency when the time is right.

Jones is a lazy, soft ordinary key forward. I think the blues would have been better off giving up a 2nd rounder for Jaksch alone (IMO he is not worth more than this), and keeping 7 and going the draft, and forget the rest. But time will tell.

Ironically, a like for like replacement for Waite (except younger).

Except that Jones does not have any of the discipline issues. He's also 197/198cm which puts him in the "can be a write off until 23-24" ruck type category (my arbitrary cut offs are 196cm and/or 98kgs for the really bulky players around that mark).

My view on him is very much based on the 4 or 5 VFL games I saw him play in the second half of this season which have changed my mind entirely. The thing is that the Dogs VFL side actually has a proper structure in which Jones operated with other key forward and he had no problem finding the ball close to goal or further up the ground (though he was kept closer to goal because he was dominant).

Given that it is VFL level you have to question whether he is physically capable of troubling defenders. As a very athletic (in terms of speed over short and long distances and his jump) 197/198cm he fits the profile.

The remaining query is whether he can develop the mental side. There is no doubting that he is going to need to add a competitive edge to his play to be a quality player but then, there are few coaches if any in history that are as good as Malthouse is at instilling those sorts of qualities in players. His edge will come from endurance and work rate rather than crashing packs.

If I was Carlton I'd be very confident that I've found a good quality key forward for the long term. That doesn't mean star, it just means a guy that can ultimately play as tall forward 2 or 3 for 100+ games to help complete a forward structure and win a few games a year off his own boot.

Waite can play back, Jones is just shit.

Though im not going to say much, our recruits could turn out to be terrible too, but we have the excuse of no draft picks I guess..

I'm with Bruno in this one. Jones is a smart pick up for Carlton. He and Jaksch allow Henderson to play in defence or not play Casboult.

Hmmm. Interesting.

My personal take on it is **** Carlton.

Think they end up with Jamieson, Row and Jaksch in the key defensive posts with Henderson, Jones and Casboult/Kreuzer rotating forward.

The one thing that spine can do is run which is really important.

Jaksch is a terrible defender. Definitely should play forward

I think the Bulldogs could be in big trouble. I understand they are all very excited about Boyd.. but one 19 year old with 9 games experience is not going to save the fact that they have lost an entire draft year.. and draft period in one hit.

They have lost something close to 1200 games experience in the last two years.. that is a huge hit. You would also think that Boyd and Murphy are well into their twilight..

I've always had a soft spot for the dogs.. old man follows them.. but I think the flippancy in which their supporter base has taken the loss of a champion like Griffen and their captain.. is staggering.

Random thought/question for the day

Who are the next generation of superstars of the competition?

Im talking GAJ, Pendlebury, Watson, JPK

Can think of one straight off the top of my hat, Marcus Bontempelli is going to be a superstar.
I'll nominate one from each club that's most likely IMO:

Adelaide: Dangerfield
Brisbane: Rockliff
Carlton: Menzel
Collingood:
Essendon: Heppell
Fremantle: Fyfe
Geelong: Duncan
Gold Coast: O'Meara
GWS: Treloar
Hawthorn: Anderson
Melbourne: Salem
North Melbourne:
Port Adelaide: Wines
Richmond: Cotchin
St. Kilda: Steven
Sydney: Heeney
West Coast:
Western Bulldogs: Bontempelli

Couldn't pick one from Collingwood, North or West Coast.

Fair list. I'd have Tyson in ahead of Salem though, and probably Hill ahead of Anderson
