It's easy to look like you have great depth when your core is of such quality. It's only as the core declines that the depth is actually tested. Consider Geelong, as the most obvious current example.
what exactly do geelong prove? they've lost or experienced a big decline from most of their 2010/11 core but still made top 4 this year...

hawks r going nowhere.

Well they had injuries near the end of the year and went out in straight sets. They made top 4 but they never really looked like a threat.

Still plenty of good football in 28-30 year olds. If those guys were pushing 33-35 and the young talent wasn't coming through to replace them there would be some question marks but everything we've seen suggests the Hawks have ridiculous depth.
Hale, Hodge, Mitchell, Burgoyne and Lake are all 32/33. Gibson will be 31 before the start of the season. That's a very old core, and they're arguably the most important players.

Hale, Hodge, Mitchell, Lewis, Gibson, Lake, Burgoyne, Roughead are all going to be 28 or older at the start of next season. That's 1/3 of their best 22, to say that their list isn't old is just plain incorrect.

How does players being in their physical prime (26 to 29) make it harder form the Hawks to win the flag?

Most of those are older than that though and on the decline. Also think 25-27 is more of the physical prime.

What I really would like to know is how the Hawks, Swans and Cats can keep topping up with expensive signings and remain under the cap.

Given the tightrope every team must walk, it surely must be harder for those teams, yet they continue to defy the odds. Do they seriously have the best list managers where they can do what other teams can't, year in, year out?

Winning flags and always playing finals helps.

But that has nothing to do with the $s they command. Free Agency was always going to favour the top teams as those going to dud teams just want a pension. But year in year out.......

True

It's why the AFL need to bring in a rule for teams who finish in the top 4/GF cant sign free agents for that year.

They did that with the Swans because they own them. They don't own all teams....just 2/3 to 3/4 though we have shown we have no spine. Wouldn't surprise me if they brought in a rule like that though I wouldn't agree with it as it is more restraint of trade.

People won't agree with it but it does solve the equalization problem that the AFL always preaches about.

I don't know why it took me this long, but I think I have found the man the myth the legend Sedat! on reddit!
Doubt it

Mate, I'm sure the majority of the footy public feels the same way. Of course there are a few (over represented) nutters on SEN who want to see your club burn - but I feel most of the footy public feels this whole saga (plus the sanctions you've already had) is more than punishment enough - at least for the poor players.

Struggle to believe Stevo would write that

I can't really see anyone but Hawthorn winning it to be honest unless things change throughout the season.

I do rate Port, but I think 2016 is their year. The swans... Well they'll beat us up round 1 for sure, but we would have to wait and see what that GF demolition has done to them. Were massively exposed IMO as opposed to the common 'didn't rock up' explanation. It could motivate them even more a la Essendon 2000 though.

I'd also expect at most one more genuine premiership contender rising up next year. Could be Fremantle or North. Wouldn't discount Essendon either if the ASADA stuff is settled in the players favour and if they can sort out most of their problems in recent years.

Just a finger dislocation. Am I missing something?
They can be annoying injuries. I had one, looked like this, kept me from Taekwondo and cricket for 6 ****ing weeks.
